We have to consider the other side of the coin too. I agree we shouldn’t seek to know a holy Angel’s proper name. Apart from being curious, there is a potential there for arrogance - to presume we would know the name God gave our own guardian Angel.
From what we can observe about the Angels’ names which are given in sacred scripture , the Angels’ names revealed to us denote their function:
Michael - Who is like unto God ?
Gabriel - Power or Strength of God .
Raphael - Remedy/Medicine of God, or, God heals.
… all these names find their true meaning/identity in God - not in humans .
Even Jacob who wrestled with the Angel wasn’t given the Angel’s name :
Genesis 32:29-30
… “You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.”
Jacob then asked him, “Do tell me your name, please.” He answered, “Why should you want to know my name?” With that, he bade him farewell. .
But our guardian Angels are assigned to each of us personally and this can bring us to intimacy with our guardian Angel. Our Blessed Lord refers to them as “our” Angels:
Matt 18:10
[NAB]…I say to you that
their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.
[DRV]… for I say to you, that
their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
St. Padre Pio had a vibrant relationship with his guardian Angel. He even encouraged others to send their guardian Angels to him.
St. Peregrine is said to have had his Angel as his companion. This is reflected in the
St. Peregrine Prayer - “O God, You gave St. Peregrine an angel for his companion, the Mother of God for his teacher, and Jesus for the Physician of his infirmity…”
The pic
here represents the concept of our guardian Angel as our companion and as something worth considering.
The whole point which shouldn’t be smothered here is
Intimacy With One’s Guardian Angel. Anyone who discourages another’s intimacy with their guardian Angel is doing the Angel and God a disservice.
So while we shouldn’t seek to know our guardian Angel’s proper name, there is no narrow-minded interpretation alluding to the delusion that we may only refer to them exclusively as, “my guardian Angel” . If I wish to have a relationship with my guardian Angel and acknowledge interiorly that I don’t need to know his proper name during my earthly pilgrimage, yet in conversation/invocation I wish to refer to him as, say, “brother of my soul” or “dear companion” , that is toally cool and is no one else’s business.
A good building block to start with when wanting to have a more intimate relationship with our guardian Angel, is to, when we contemplate him, remember that God is there with him too - they never become disconnected.
