I’m an average Joe as well and my family and I have felt the tax cuts in a big way, both though more money in our pockets, enough to cover 1.5 weeks of food for the 6 of us, and the biggest raise and bonus since pre 2007. Companies are definitely not keeping all the money for themselves, wages are increasing and they are investing in updating and expansion too, my dh’s field of work is very busy now and that’s what they deal with. I’m sorry that you haven’t felt the positive influence yet, I hope you do soon. We will agree to disagree about the economy not being a result of Trumo’s policies.

have to remember, today’s GOP is made up of two major groups: conservatives
I would tend to side with the GOP conservatives much more than the libertarian types.

Two examples of GOP members who I strongly support: John McCain (RIP) and Marco Rubio (well, when he was running against Trump in the 2016 primaries I voted for him… Not so sure about him now)…

By means of health care, nutrition, and housing when and until they can be provided for in a dignified manner.
And that is a role preformed by many Catholic charitable organizations. For example, Paul Stefan Homes in Virginia bought and remodeled an old hotel to provide a home for struggling mothers. Can we take care of everyone, of course not, but I believe that it is a function better performed by charities than the government.

Just a reminder:

I understand this is a heated political/moral theology debate, but let’s keep things Christian and civil.

Let’s all try to work harder at understanding our “opponents” views instead of demonizing them and work harder toward coming to a consenus on issues and loving and forgiving each other. Let’s give people the benefit of the doubt and believe they have good intentions instead of jumping to the reactionary conclusion that they are working to bring about nefariousus schemes.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
Holy Mary, Protector of the unborn, pray for us
Holy Mary, Refuge of the poor, the resident alien, the orphan and the widow, pray for us

Catholic organization X says that this means you must vote for someone who advocates for a sudden and absolute legal change whereby all abortions are not longer allowed, and for people pursuing abortion to be punished, and for there to be little else to prevent abortion other than its immediate illegality.
What if you believe the position of the Republican party makes the problem of abortion WORSE, as historical statistics show?
What if you think ending birthright citizenship will increase abortions?
What if you think being pro-life also means being against the death penalty?
What if you think being pro-life means affordable health care for all people?
What if you think being pro-life means supporting the less fortunate rather than giving money to the rich and hoping they eventually give it to charities that aren’t corrupt?

I could go on and on.

If you think the Republican party is pro-life, you are woefully ignorant.

It is immoral to vote for many democrats.

OK – which bullet points on your list are OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED by the Democratic Party?
*infanticide (abortion is a form of infanticide)
*euthanasia (can be a form of fratricide, patricide, and/or matricide)
*sin of the Sodomites

Now, which positions are supported by the Republican Party? NONE.
I think it’s clear that you view the Democratic Party as totally evil and nothing good, and the Republican party as good with a few small warts that need to be worked on.

Therefore, IMO, your own bias and political leaning is skewing your judgment.

I view both parties as having both good and evil qualities, and members of both parties being both good and evil people.

I think neither party is perfectly evil nor perfectly good, and I can understand why someone would suppoet one party over the other, whichever party they may support.
You are putting words in my mouth. I do not think the Democratic Party is “totally evil.” I think socialism & communism are totally evil.

Let’s be clear about a few things: (1) I voted for Obama TWICE!!! And I totally regret it now. I grew up in Delaware and Joe Biden was my Senator for my entire childhood & college years. But they BOTH lied about same sex marriage. And the Democrats moved from “abortion being safe and rare” to “pro-lifers are not welcome.” The Democrats are also officially socialist now, even though they pretend they are not.

If we could start a viable Catholic Party or Christian Party in the United States, I would leave the Republican Party in a heart beat. But third parties cannot succeed in the US because we are not a parliamentary system. However, I do feel that out of the two parties, it is the Republican Party that COULD become a true Christian party.

The libertarian branch of the Republican Party has too much influence in my opinion, and I’m not happy about that.

Additionally, the Democratic Party is an official member of the Progressive Alliance (BTW - which keeps getting removed from wikipedia – Progressive Alliance - Wikipedia to prevent Americans from realizing where the Democrats stand).

But you can see that the Democratic Party is officially a member, even though many deny it, on the Progressive Alliance’s own website: Parties & Organisations | Progressive Alliance

The Republican Party on the other hand is part of the International Democrat Union, which includes a number of Christian Parties from around the world International Democrat Union - Wikipedia

God bless

As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, abortion is MURDER. Besides euthanasia, no other existing political position reaches the level of evil of abortion and euthanasia.
And the Church goes further.

The Church believes it is not enough to fight for their right to life, we must fight for their right to life after these babies are born…By means of health care, nutrition, and housing when and until they can be provided for in a dignified manner.

There is no greater advocate for life after birth than our Church. It amazes me over and over again how one can claim a Right to Life agenda without taking into the considerations necessary for that life when it is here. Never fails.
Yes, out Church is the best at this. And as a conservative I want to see the city, counties and states help out with this more. But I don’t want people in Washington telling people in states they’ve never been to how to care of their people.

Each state is very different, and frankly, many counties are very different too. They each have their own sub-culture, values, etc.

I’m a big supporter of subsidiarity and I prefer the smallest levels of govt handle social issues. Not the federal govt, who often struggles with the postal service.

The American Solidarity Party is a 3rd party started by Catholics built on Catholic social teaching and Christian democratic principles.

Unfortunately it is not well known right now…

Although in 2016 the ASP ran candidates for POTUS and managed to get 6,662 votes (one of which was mine).

So bottom line: Yes, you can be responsible Catholic and vote for a Democrat.

Most if not all people I will be voting for today are Democrats.

Not that it’s a HUGE deal anyway, considering there aren’t any big seats up where I am.

I’m very well aware it, thanks.

But it’s not viable because America is a two party system.

I’m a strong supporter of all pro-life Catholics becoming Republicans so we can take over the Republican Party and make it better.

If all pro-life Catholics would simply join the GOP, it would change for the better pretty quickly.

Though all of American History, the only times a new party replaced an old one was when one party totally split and the break away party replaced the old party.

Never in American history has a true third party grown to replace one of the two major parities.

Or just make the Dem party better.

One can argue the Dem party gets a lot right, at least closer to Catholic principles on things like health care, environment, immigration, poverty, justice, etc.

Abortion is a big issue. But you can be Catholic, regard abortion as inherently evil, and still think the GOP methods are not the best at minimizing the evil.

Not when the Chairman of the Democratic Party says pro lifers are not allowed.

Not when the Democratic Party supports abortion on demand

Not when the delegates at the Democratic Convention boo God.

Not when the Democratic Party supports normalizing sexual sin.

Not when the Democratic Party is an official member of the socialist Progressive Alliance.

Not when the Democrats sue nuns, like Little Sisters of the Poor and groups like ETWN.

Should I go on? The Democratic Party is officially anti-Catholic, they just don’t want to admit it because they don’t want to loose Catholic voters.

I didn’t find Mr. Maturen to be qualified to be President. I thought his experience as a car salesman really wasn’t relevant to running a large operation like the US government.

Again, I’m not gonna be in a fuss because I prefer to look at Christ/Church first, then party.

I’m not going to defend every little thing on the Democrat side. My allegiance isn’t like that.

But what I do know is that the current Republican administration is NOT at all pro-Catholic, nor is it “pro-life.”

I don’t need to make a list of all the evils or errors of the GOP. What’s the point?

The point of this thread is to determine whether you can be Catholic and vote Democrat.

And you can. Like it or not, you can.

Look, I didn’t vote for Trump in the primary. I thought he would be a PR disaster for the Republican Party. But as my former spiritual adviser (a priest) said, I think God is using Trump to expose the rot in American society, the media, and our political system.

If some other Republican would have won the primary, Hillary would have most likely won. And she would surely be pushing her agenda that “some religious beliefs [aka the Catholic Church] will need to change.”

Hillary would have NO issue suing the Catholic Church to push abortion, gay marriage, etc.

Saying the Democratic party is officially anti-Catholic, but they don’t want to admit it is an oxymoron.

On the other hand…
The Republican party is the official home of bigots, racists, sexists, war-mongers, neo-Nazis, anti-science and anti-education, and anyone who hates the poor and down-trodden. They just don’t want to admit it.
