St. Ignatius used the term Catholic Church In 106 A.D.in his letter to the Chirstians in Smyrna

From the Nicene Creed 381 A.D. “I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.”

Could you provide scripture that they were written to the Catholic church. I have yet to find anything in the bible about that. And also when did the catholic church begin. Thanks God Bless
At the beginning of the epistles (letters) themselves, Paul (and where applicable, Timothy) address the Church at a particular location. The Church is the Catholic Church. Please note the reference to bishops and deacons, “the” Church(es) in a particular location (diocese?), the saints, the faithful, the brothers. What Church does that sound like to you?

1 Corinthians 1:1-3: Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:1-2: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth with all the saints who are throughout Achaia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 1:1-3: Paul, an apostle not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead, and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:1-2: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:1-2: Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the bishops and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:1-2: Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

1 Thessalonians 1:1: Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.

2 Thessalonians 1:2: Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the
church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

How do you figure that the Catholic faith existed before the Word of God. I was taught that the Catholic church didn’t begin until the 5th or 6th century. Can you provide scripture please. Please do not give the Peter the stone case. That has already been established as Christ being the Rock. Thanks God Bless
It is easy to find that the Catholic church existed before the Bible, even the founder of youre protestant faith Luther aknowledged that. The Catholic church is simply the first christians. Read the book ‘The lifes of the popes’ and it will go from the current pope all the way back to Peter. Everythings is available its just the ignorant refuse to face it because they dont want to believe it! History shows the Catholic church’s existance all the way to Peter like it or not! why would the truth bother you? embrace it with love for Christ! You do not read about the name catholic in the Bible because there was not the problem of denominations before or during the making of the Bible. Catholic means universal church and was simply the one body of christians before the vanity of self opinion left poeple to go astray from the church and create there own religions.

That book sounds interesting. I searched on the Store here and on Amazon and couldn’t find a book with that exact title. Do you have a link to the book? Thanks.

Weird! it was given to me by my deacon and I have loaned it to a new comer of the holy faith. I will get it back and give you the info in a week or so.

Thanks. Probably just a variation on the title. I’ll look around some more and if I find something before you get the book back, I’ll post it here and you can tell me if that is the book or not.

Would anyone care to critique this? Do you have any serious problems with anything contained in the title? Why or why not?
By God’s grace it is being protected, right? We are saved by grace through faith. Grace is a form of power, because it is within God’s power to give us His graces.
  1. We are born again through water and the spirit. (John 3:5)
  2. Our place is Heaven is imperishable, of course! (John 14:2)
  3. Do we “persevere to the end” (Matthew 24:13, Mark 13:13) to be saved? Do we avoid becoming tangled up in the world and overcome, thus becoming worse off at the end than the beginning"? (2 Peter 2:20)
I want to thank you for drawing us always to scripture with your questions. I will also remind you, out of love, that the bible was never intended to be the sole basis of our faith. It brilliantly supplements the Apostolic teachings and Spirit-lead authority that Christ sent His Apostles forth with.

“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling” is understood by me within the context of Lordship Salvation, so please don’t paint me with the Free Grace brush.
i don’t u/stand this…Lordship salvation (?) probably because i am not able to take your comment “in context” which reminds me:
The Bible, if taken out of context, can really mess up a person’s mind/soul. The Bible belongs in the context of the Church
I need confirmation from you that this “working out” does not entail you earning the salvation that Jesus paid .
we are saved by grace. Grace comes from doing good and avoiding evil. If a person never worked on his salvation, Spent his life only working for $ and the things of this world, he would end up in Hell, not because he did those things but because he didn’t do many holy things, things necessary for salvation, things Jesus tells us to do. If a person does everything Jesus says, he will get to Heavne… but… uh… i doubt many people do everything Jesus says… which is why Jesus said that the way to eternal life is narrow and there are few who find it… Many will try to enter Heaven but not be strong enough (***St Lk 13:23…). ***If you do everything Jesus said this = WORKS… and so, in a sense, one could say that a person does need to work his way into Heaven… It is NOT easy getting into Heaven… I don’t know why more pepole don’t speak on these, admittedly “painful” things Jesus said… about the few who are saved… Have you been to the site about St Leonard and “the few who are saved”? You can google it… very interesting… and scary.
Such a person is not relying on God’s grace but on their own efforts and merits. But that’s not what you do, right? You rely on your efforts and merits…which are themselves gifts straight from God. .
i doubt i am u/standing this either…
the end result is something that means the same thing as what I just said, it makes no difference.
I would not dare to say that what i am about to say is an exact paraphrase of the Church’s teachings but again, one kind of DOES have to work his way to Heavne. It is work to do things JEsus’s way… If a person reads the entire NT, he will see just how difficult it is to do everything Jesus says to do… give up everything?? to Follow him??? I don’t know anyone who has given up absolutely everything to follow Jesus… True, i don’t know very many pepole… but i don’t think you know too many either… who are giving up all material things, etc… to follow Jesus… all worldly relationships… .(& they all seem to be worldly these days…) well, that’s down-right un-American… and the whole world is included here… because, well… for one thing, the world is pretty american-ized…
. Just describe the single cause of salvation, as you understand it, that gets you from A to B.
the single cause of salvation is doing everything Jesus said and btw: Jesus said far more than the Bible says he said… and it says that in the Bi ble… so we NEED His Church…

Doing what He commands involves WORK because, as stated, it is WORK to do what he wants… it is work to be different from what one is naturally… it is difficult (work) to give up things we love (material things, worldly relationships…) … As someone in AA has said (well, that’s where i 1st heard it): the longest journye you will ever take is the one between your head & your heart… You cn know what Jesus says (head) but doing it whole-heartedly (heart) is a different sstory… this is why it is so hard to get into Heaven… peple don’t always work so hard on making that difficult painful journey…
Perhaps when you’re done with this, you’ll approach future Protestant-Catholic discussions a little differently. If you’re not willing to put works/efforts/merit in Point A and the Protestants don’t put it there either, maybe you won’t have quite as much to disagree over. If you do stick to the Merit system for Point A, though, you’ll notice continued problems.
problems???
So with God’s help, you earn the salvation that Jesus already paid for
Jesus does not do anything a good father would not do. For example, if a young child breaks the neighbr’s window, a good father isn’t going to just say, “Oh, Junior, how wonderful. You told Mr. Jones across the street that you are sorry! Now go on and play, Daddy will pay for the window…” don’t think so. He loves his child and wants to teach him the value of being careful of others’ property (etc, etc)…& he also doesn’t want him taking sin lightly (etc…) He accepts that his son is sorry but makes him pay (with his puny allowance) for the window… Maybe it will take a long time for him to pay off the huge debt with his puny allowance… but he has to because then he will be free of guilt, will have learned things… become a better person and etc… Forgiveness is just the 1st step to getting to Heaven… we have to mean it when we say we are sorry. We also have to fix the damage our sins have caused…
So it seems the real question is: How do we do this? Well, for one, we spend time with Jesus in the Real Presence… where He can do as He wants with us…

we sacrifice… we deny ourselves, etc… All this involves obtaining Jesus’ help… depending on Him… letting HIM do things in us, through us, etc… He does most everything but we must cooperate… we must submit ourselves to Him 100%… NOt easy but i know one thing: sin makes it 100 times harder (or more so, depending on the gravity of the sin)… it is not so easy as it sounds… to cooperate w/ Jesus…
i know this from that best teacher of all, Experience…

All of the epistles of Paul, which predate the Gospels, were written to the Catholic Church already in existence in Philippi, Corinth, Galatia, and Ephesus. You were taught incorrectly. God bless.
Please provide scripture that the gospels were written to the catholic church. Thanks

Pope Linus 76/79 A.D.
Pope Anacletuc 88 A.D.
Pope St. Clement I 97/101 A.D.
Pope Evaristus 105/107 A.D.

There is the Catholic Church
Not looking by what others have stated only scripture to show where the gospels were given to the catholic church. Each Gospel was written to a specific audience Jews Gentiles Romans etc…

Please provide scripture that the gospels were written to the catholic church. Thanks
Not only should you credit the Catholic church for giving you your bible because without it you wouldn’t have one. The Catholic church also compiled it. An historical fact. 👍

Wonderful. Now live that faith. Do not let it atrophy for lack of exercise. Respond to that grace which you have received. Respond with hope and in love. If you live that faith in love you will not lose that which is being prepared for you.

Peace,
Robert

I am amazed at the lack of protestant knowledge or simply lack of common sense! What defines a fireman? is it the name or what he does that defines him? it is more about what he does rather than the title that he claims! The church is the bride of Christ! when you marry someone do you not show your love by actions or do you only do it through words? If it is a good marriage you do both, it is the same with being saved! If you are truly saved than you cannot help but to do works in the lords honor! How do you know if a tree is a apple tree or not? because it produces apples! How do you know if someone is christian or not? because of his or her fruits! Denominations teach such things only to keep poeple away from the Mother church! To ignore this is to ignore the chance of spiritual maturity!

this may be a topic for another thread… because i do wonder why other “churches” are so anti-Catholic… Is it because they know there is something to Catholicism? or is it that they really believe it is “evil”… or wrong or - a little of both? I guess it depends on who we are talking about… but the preachers (nonCath) who study history… those are the ones i can’t u/stand… How can they study Church history and NOT be Ctholic??? Some just go on preaching, using the Church fathers, etc… in their sermons, . using Catholic “stuff”… and acting as though it were their own ideas… Or am i just imagining this? I sometimes listen to this guy on the radio… and he sounds kinda Catholic or like he’s borrowing stuff form the Catholics… so… um… why does it seem like he’s hiding all that?? I don’t know… maybe i am just suspicious and un-trusting??? 🤷

i guess they would have to give up a lot to convert…

Give up a lot to convert? That is the understatement of the year, one should be so lucky as to be called to the true church.

you are right… What i should have said was they THINK they have a lot to give up…

interesting point… I gues it is our job to disabuse them of such silly thoughts/ideas… 🙂

As early as the year 107-110, the Church was referred to as the universal or catholic Church. This was only 7-10 years after the death of the Apostle John. You know that ‘catholic’ simply means universal, right? The universal Church was founded between the years 30-33 by Jesus Christ. That was documented in Matthew 16:18. If that is not good enough for you, then it was founded in the year 33, also by Christ, as He gave the great commission to the Apostles to “make disciples of all nations”. All nations is synonymous with universal, or catholic. This is recorded in Matthew 28:19-20.

A house devided will not stand! The Holy, APASTOLIC church is one body that does not astray as the protestant faith does. Protestants are lost sheep blinded by self opinion over apastolic teachings. The longer protestants exists the more numbers there will be of contradicting denominations that will prevent a person to mature spiritualy in the grace of Christs church. I will pray that all of you may have the courage and humility as I did in finding that true, holy, universal, apastolic, church!

When the Roman Emperor Constantine legalized the Christian faith, and ended the persecution of Christians with the Edict of Milan in 313, the church in Rome gained even further prominence. As the church in Rome allied itself with the Roman government, it continued to grow in it’s authority, and influence. As early as the 3rd century the leaders of the church in Rome were claiming for themselves a supremacy over other churches throughout the Empire when it came to matters of doctrine. And by the 6th century the Church in Rome was exercising jurisdiction over the churches. And thus, the Roman Catholic Church was born.
