I've decided not to attend Mass for now

At first I was in a hardcore mindset and planning on going to Mass no matter what, but I changed my mind because of the wider consequences.

I’m young and healthy and not personally too worried for my safety, but with all the knowledge I’ve read about the pandemic and the fact that people can be carriers for a full week or more without symptoms, I think I’m not attending Mass anymore since the obligation is suspended anyway. It just seems like the best and kindest decision imo. I think everybody here should consider that aspect of the question if they haven’t already and not just themselves. All it would take is for me to catch one particle, and then I end up infecting everybody in my household without ever realizing I’m sick.

Here’s to hoping that the shift in seasons will decrease the rate of transmission. The rates don’t seem to be nearly as steep in Thailand/Vietnam/Singapore so that is promising 👍

Peace.

Good on you. You may very well have saved the life of an elderly or health-compromised parishioner. It is at times like this that we learn the value of obedience. The Lord sent us shepherds. He did not require that we agree, only that we obey.

True love waits.

You should do what is best for you, with no worries. It is a difficult time. I went to Mass today and it seemed about 1/2 full from normal. Mass is not cancelled here, although the Sunday obligation is lifted. Except for couples and parents with kids, people naturally separated themselves from others. No holy water (I miss it!), no “kiss of peace” handshake, no communion on tongue. It was a very somber and quiet Mass in which we prayed for the end to the virus and for those infected. It felt good to pray with others.

Yes! It reminded me a bit of Holy Thursday when the altar is stripped. Everything feels so devastatingly empty… not right. I have started to carry my own little vial of Holy Water.

It’s all academic now… I have been so busy here, looking at the news, getting ready to move [unless the closing is postponed] that I have missed Mass anyway…

Good for you! This is the right decision at this time for the greater good of the community. I posted a thread about my intention to do the same a few days ago. I watched Mass online today and made Spiritual Communion.

May God bless you all! 🙂

I thought it was a mortal sin to miss mass without disensation?

I haven’t heard anything about a suspension of the obligation to attend mass.

Because when the obligation is lifted but Mass is not canceled, some people still choose to go—thus defeating the purpose of social distancing.

No, not in the case of our Mass today, as I stated in my earlier post.

It depends on your archdiocese. Different areas are doing different things.

that’s what is starting to bother me about this pandemic, it’s gotten to the point that if we so much as set foot out of our house, we are being irresponsible, immoral, putting people at risk ETC and responsible for everyone’s death

I agree. In my opinion there should be more Masses at this time. But I’ll be excoriated for that opinion by some!

I don’t like the hand of cards either, but that’s what has been dealt. I’d rather not do Mass or restaurants or gyms or other enclosed spaces until further notice. It’s one thing to take risks for myself but the reality is that I would also be taking risks for other people and I’m not personally okay with that.

Hard to imagine how people received Communion while maintaining a six-foot distance from the priest.
