I get that, but um, how would this work in a Catholic Church lol?
The steps are these:
  1. Go to Confession for your sins and complete your assigned penance.
  2. Do the indulgenced action or prayer (for example, read the Bible for 30 minutes, or else pray five decades of the Rosary).
  3. Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the intentions of the Pope.
  4. Receive Holy Communion on the same day, or as soon as possible.
That’s it, you’re done - you can then decide what to do with your Indulgence - keep it for yourself, or give it to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and then ask your Guardian Angel to take care of the details. 🙂

As long as numbers 2-4 are done while in a state of grace, these steps can occur in any order. 👍

In fairness, many in the clergy just prior to the reformation took payment from the laity in return for indulgences.

Sure, the Church didn’t officially approve…but just because it wasn’t dogma…doesn’t mean they didn’t approve.

It’s like a bunch of corrupt street cops who are on the take, the official position of the police department is that they cant take bribes.

Now the police chief and all the officers are aware that the street cops are on the take and they don’t do anything about it…in fact, some people suggest that some of street cops are giving some money to the police headquarters for a giant renovation.

Now, once all the cops are caught by the FBI, they are disciplined and the Chief and all the officers claim that it was never the official policy of the police department to take bribes…so they can’t be held responsible or faulted.

So, although members of the police department were corrupt, the instititution of the police department is as pure as fresh fallen snow.

In reality, the entire police force is as corrupt as can be…i fail to see the difference between the people who make up an organization and the organization itself.

I think that this is a very good analogy in response to people who maintain that the Church never approved of the sale of indulgences…just that individuals took it upon themselves to sell them…and not only was a blind eye turned, but there is compelling evidence that money was funneled to pay for St Peters Basilica…all from the sale of indulgences.
yes, good analogy…the RCC is a human church, however. I can look at history with shock, and disgust, like the next person, but I believe that in the Church’s history, we have learned a great deal, of what was needed to change. I also believe that God shows us all mercy–even those who sold indulgences, and abused the Church in doing so. :o

So, is it required to confess to a priest, or can you not just confess to God/Jesus, through prayer?

Truth is relative.
I doubt even thecoach would be able to agree with you here. Truth is not relative. If it were, an insane man who believed that he could fly, could throw himself off a cliff and head south for the winter. Truth isn’t dependant upon the beliefs of the one hearing it. That is simply insane.

Oh no…I AGREE with Tietjen…the world must be coming to an end!

Indulgences are not physical objects that one can buy. Anybody can gain an Indulgence without anyone else knowing anything about it.

What happened with this “selling of indulgences” was that Indulgences were listed that included almsgiving - particularly, almsgiving to the reconstruction of the Vatican (wihtout which we would never have heard of artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, or da Vinci).

They would still have had to fulfill the rest of the steps to get an Indulgence, though - going to Confession, praying for the Pope, and receiving Holy Communion. Also, they would have had to do the almsgiving while in a state of grace, meaning, after they had been to Confession (typically).

People who could do the almsgiving (rich people) were perceived as “buying their way into Heaven” - and yes, it’s probably easier to give money than to recite prayers or read the Bible - so people like Martin Luther were upset by this, because of the seeming unfairness.

Because of this, the Council of Trent removed the ability to receive an Indulgence for almsgiving - today, the only way to get one is either to pray or to read the Bible.

So, its rude to let people know I am not a Catholic? If so, then I am very rude…

wannabies? haha, and I am the rude one here?
It’s an adult thing… you wouldn’t understand. LOL
Seriously, your sig gives the impression that you do not believe Catholics to be Christian. That is rude and a lie.

He actually is…just about the same attributes as many of your priests have, yes?
Well no, no quite. I’ve yet to meet a catholic priest that appears to be as arrogant, rude, self-righteous, self-imortant, heart filled with hatred and blind to the truth as you appear to be - I say ‘‘appear’’, because having read your posts here I’m not entirely convinced youre not a troll just getting lots of attention on a bulletin board that you crave in real live but cant get as people in the real world just walk right on by you … you’re of no significance what so ever so get your rocks off on an internet bb winding catholics up …

I might be wrong … but I doubt it 😃 😃 😃

I hope that is a joke.

I do not care if it gives an impression, its true.

I never said that, if someone assumes thats what I am saying, I can’t help that 🤷 .

Why on the members list does everyone put religion as Catholic? I mean, if needed, wouldn’t that need to be Religion/Denomination?
There are no Catholic denominations. Either a person is Catholic or he/she isn’t. The protestants have denominations simply because when they broke away from the Catholic Church they condemned themselves to everlasting disagreement amoung their leaders. So, today when a protestant disagrees with his pastor, he simply can go and start his own denomination. This is evident by the thousands upon thousands of different protestant denominations out there. 😦
