ChristianKnight, if I may interject one small line of reasoning into the confession discussion.

Did sin leave the world after the the last Apostle died? If so, logically, there is no need for the authority to forgive sins to be passed along to those who held the Apostolic offices next. If sin remained, why would God not insure that the authority to forgive sins would not remain as well? Simple logic. The need is still there, so it should be allowed.

Yes, but my point was that successorship is Biblical, and that seemed to be your problem with Confession.
This type of thinking is what leads to so many “flavors” of Protestantism. There is but one Truth, and that Truth does not rest on my feelings or opinions. I may not like the Truth, it may be inconvenient, or I might not even understand it. But I believe it.
So, I shouldn’t have an opinoin?

Their are so amny versions of the bible, and so many different verisons of Christianity, it is a little hard to find the truth.😊

btw: I was told by a Orthodox that hte Catholic church broke away from them?

scripture please

language that is not optional?
James 5:16
Therefore confess you sins to one another….

1 Jn 1:8-10
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

It would appear that **if we do not confess **our sins we will not be forgiven.

I hope this helps.

You should definitely have an opinion. This shows that you have commitment. We also need to love the truth because it is the truth that sets us free. Scripture even says this about the truth:

2 Thess 2:9-10
The coming of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

The truth is essential and we must all be open to the truth. This is not easy because our religious beliefs and sentiments run quite deep within us. Prayer and love of the Lord go a long way to opening us up to the truth. I think your coming to this forum is an indication that you are willing to look and search. This is a good thing.

God bless.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. - James 5:16

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. - I John 1:9

In James 5:16, isn’t he saying pray for each other, he doesn’t say you will go to hell if not, or if you have to do deeds or pay to be forgiven.

the jn thing, um is 1-8 the verses and 10 the chapter or other way around?

The top part says pray for each other, ok I get that.

um Joh 1:9, doesn’t say that on this, are you sure thats John Chapter 1 verse 9?

Depends. Is it your opinion that Christ died for your sins? What if I told you I disagreed with you. Would that be a correct opinion?

So, you go to the source - the early church. The one that put the Bible together in the first place. The version of Christianity that was around before 1520 and all those unauthorized versions started floating around.
btw: I was told by a Orthodox that hte Catholic church broke away from them?
Orthodox don’t follow the Pope any more, although most of their dogma is the same. I’m not real familiar with all the reasons why the Schism happened, something about filioque being the final straw.

I do not care what you think about Christ, thats your opinoin. I might try to lean you towards Christianity, but I will not force you to read the bible.

He told me I should research Orthodox.

Well, if the Apostles, the students of Jesus, tell me to do something, I’ll do it, just because I love Jesus. I’m not going to try to figure out a way that it’s ok for me not to do it.

These words:

Therefore confess you sins to one another….[James 5:16], say a lot more than simply pray for one another.

When coupled to the quote from John it would seem that it is mandatory for forgiveness. You might also look at my post #37here: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?p=3983603#post3983603

…You seem to know more about me then I do.

I am just tryin to find the truth, maybe thats wrong to you, but thats your opinoin.

But I would be wrong!🙂
That doesn’t mean that I have a right to force you to see right. I could try to show you right, but I will not be a oppressor.

You can take a horse to water, but can’t force it to drink.

  How is what I posted anything about you? Where did i say that trying to find the Truth is wrong? All I said is I would do what God asked me to to, even if I didn’t understand it. I said Truth is not an opinion.

Who’s forcing anybody to do anything? This is a discussion forum.

First Letter of John - not the Gospel of John, but the First Letter of John. We write it as “I John.” It’s toward the back of your New Testament. 😉

There are also II John (Second Letter of John) and III John (Third Letter of John).

So, when you said I’m not going to try to figure out a way that it’s ok for me not to do it. you weren’t talking about me, trying to research into this, because I didn’t think the scripture backed it up? If not sorry, if so, continue.

I was reffering to talking about hte discussion you had about opinoins being right/wrong, where you said but my (my as in you, remember the post?)opinoin is wrong.
