Living in Alabama, I always loved the claim that we control the KKK. Between that and our allegence with the Jews, with any anti-Semetism being a planed cover for the real alliance.

Jack Chick is nothing more than an early version of that Fred Phelps character.

Chick says death cookie and Phelps says crazy cookie.

They are both disgusting and vile. No one with any reasonable sense of intelligence, Catholic or Protestant, can take either one of them seriously.

Giving either one of them any type of attention just bolsters their warped egos.

Jack Chick is a paranoid maniac with delusions about “New World Order”, controlled by the Vatican, etc.
So I take very, very little of what he has to say seriously.

However, everything I’ve read inhere seems to indicate that RCs DO believe that salvation is earned through good works. Are you now telling me that’s NOT the case?

What to believe? :confused:
 
A common misconception. Salvation comes through Christ only. That grace might be lost by sin which separates us from Christ.

So all the RCs inhere who have told me that we are also saved by our works have been mistaken about their own faith?

It’s becoming increasingly difficult for me to find out what the RC church actually teaches. As soon as I think I’ve found out, I learn that it’s not what I’ve been told, and I have to start from scratch. :confused: :confused:

Who’s told you that they are saved by works? Only Jesus saves. Things can be difficult to discuss with Catholics and Protestants because we see things differently and speak different theological languages.

Go to the library and get a copy of the Compendium of the Catholic Church for a brief read or the Catechism of the Catholic Church to truly answer your questions correctly.

Perhaps their method of explanation left things unresolved.

We are not “saved” by our works, and works do not earn us salvation. It is simply put… Faith without works is “dead”. That meaning that you can have all the “faith” in the world, but unless you are willing to live by that faith, doing as Christ commanded in the Scriptures… you aren’t going to make it to Heaven. Works are nothing “mysterious” or tricky…in reality they are what any decent person would do…

I’m not going to comment further on Jack Chick… last time I did, I got an “Attaboy” (warning) from a moderator. I guess someone was “sensitive” about what I said… 😃 Oh well…👍

I saw one the other day…and filed it in the “circular file”…just like I always do!!😃 😃 😃

Chick has endorsed Luther’s German Bible translation, but the Lutheran Church practices infant baptism. 😃

No, no one could take it all seriously, but that’s not the aim of a conspiracy theorist.
I have talked with plenty of theorists about plenty of theories. They rarely want or expect anyone to believe the whole package. Instead, they tell you one thing that everyone knows (e.g., “Chemical weaponry experiments are years ahead of what the average person reads about.”). Then they tell you something that is probably true (“Weather patterns have already changed from the eighties.”). Then something maybe true, no way you could guess ("Top military positions have been concentrated
among oil families for a long time now’). Then a lot of supposings and what-ifs and wouldn’t-it-bes (“If they were colluding on oil exploration and chemical experimentation years before the internal combustion engine was developed, isn’t it possible the engine was developed to cover the weapon experiments? And if so, isn’t that scary? However unlikely it is, doesn’t it scare you a little bit? Think about it while you lie in bed tonight. And if you can’t get it off your mind, maybe that’s something you should think about?”). The focused, supported, waking mind catches this step into irrationality quickly. After all, what if it’s not true? Why not think about that instead? Why dwell on gibberish all night when sleeping pills are far more effective as a sleep aid anyway? But rare is the person who is always focused and wakeful, so a scattershot approach or a day-and-night approach can break that defense down by catching the brain when it’s on a low part of its cycle. The rest of the paranoia mechanism takes care of itself. The audience accepts the step into free association in place of left-brained reasoning. This disrupts the cycle and makes it ever harder to get back into focused thinking.
Coercive persuasion does much more damage than simply spreading belief in things that aren’t true. It erodes minds and makes people less capable of being sure of their own reasoning powers, and they then accept more and examine less.
This exhausting way of functioning causes a feeling of misery and fear that leads to the person finding paranoid thoughts more plausible than normal thoughts. The resulting fearful ideation exhausts the brain further, and the spiral downward just spins on its own.
From abusive religious or political groups to pop-culture phenomena like the DaVinci Code to witch hunts, people can be quite smart, kindly, educated and sane and believe anything at all if someone with scares to spread catches them at the vulnerable moments and keeps at them until it takes hold. That is why it is important to communicate.
That way, your friend runs up to you and says, “I was just hanging out with these people who say (whatever it is this time around) and if that’s true it’s really scary.” And you say, “It’s not though, and here are some reasons why:” And you talk about it.
Regardless of how annoying some kinds of destructive speech are, I still firmly believe in more speech, not less, as you may have noticed.😉

Right. Basically, the Catholic teaching is “talk is cheap, whiskey costs money.” Moreover, if you truly have faith, then you will perform good works. One who simply sits around saying they “have faith,” but aren’t willing to “put their money where their mouth is” (a) likely doesn’t really have much faith, and/or (b) is not willing to do as Christ taught, and, thus, are less likely to be saved by Jesus Christ.

Actually, I believe the bibilcal quote that “faith without works is dead” nearly prompted Luther to reject that book from his translation of the Bible.

There’s a man in our town who spends thousands of dollars each year to mail hateful tracts that put down Catholics to everyone in town. Whenever I get an envelope only addressed to “HOUSEHOLDER” it doesn’t leave the post office but hits the garbage can immediately.

On occasion he has mailed us Chick comics or has stood on the steps of the post office and passed them out to everyone. The venom contained in those comics is overwhelming.

He’s also mailed hateful, expensive books to the priests and sisters of the parish, those are addressed to them personally.

I don’t buy Chick’s hate tracts. I only buy the ones that are loving. (and he has a few that are)
 
I just received my letter from Jimmy Akin today. After reading his letter I was shocked. I have lived 69 years and never heard of this “most widely published author in the world”. I don’t think I am a recluse and I read newspapers, books, blogs, etc. How did I miss him? I have heard venomous attacks on Catholics by fundamentalists, maybe that is where they are coming from. At any rate I thought it worth the $50 to help counter his **** so I sent it. Then I decided to come online and see what everyone was saying about this. I just finished reviewing (think it was 59) all the replies on this thread. I don’t remember ever seeing any thread on this forum of this length where someone did not jump in a disagree or defend the individual being discussed. Hmmmm, it did not happen this time. Is this guy really taken seriously by anyone?

Not to sound flippant or snyde, but those who take him seriously would not be likely to be on here.

For the most part, they are poorly educated and isolated, or just plain dumb. They may be formed by these ideas and then pass them on without anyone knowing where they came from

Not sure about that, I have seen many fundamentalist views here. I have been surprised many times by the views of some posters on this forum…
