And by “it,” I mean two things: First, his mind, and second, the debate.
The reason I say that is that White has now posted pictures depicting those who have urged him to be more charitable with Frank Beckwith as radical Muslims protesting and urging beheading.
Here are the pictures.
To the first he gave the name “RCfatwa” (i.e., Roman Catholic fatwa):

To the second he gave the name “RCcharity” (i.e., “Roman Catholic charity”–depicting the attitude of the man in the picture as the kind of charity that Catholics display):

ORIGINAL SOURCE.
Toward the end of his post, White seeks to blunt criticism of these pictures (or appears to do so) by saying:
Now, I have obviously attempted to insert a bit of levity, and a bit of humorous sarcasm here, for the simple reason that I’m to the point where you either have to laugh or cry.
I’m sorry, but no. This kind of excuse will not do. Not in the slightest.
You do not compare your interlocutors to Islamists or portray those who urge charity on your part as if they were advocates of beheading those who disagree with them. Whether you feel they are right or wrong, annoying or not, or even reasonable or not, the actions of people engaged in this discussion with White are simply incommensurate with the kind of actions undertaken by radical Muslims.
What White has done here is not humor.
It is vile. It is reprehensible. It is despicable. It is outrageous. If White were thinking rationally, he would see this.
Hence, White has lost his mind when it comes to this. He is not functioning as a rational agent on this topic.
He also loses any debate on this point via special application of Godwin’s Law.
Godwin’s Law holds that the longer an online discussion goes, the greater the odds of someone making a comparison to Hitler. It is standard practice in many Internet circles–because of the inflammatory nature of this comparison and its tendency to start flame wars and shut down rational discussion–to regard anyone who makes such a comparison (unless you are talking about real-life Nazis or mass murderers) as having automatically lost the debate in question.
Islamists are the Nazis of the post-9/11 world, and thus anyone who depicts his debate opponents as Islamists automatically loses whatever debate was underway due to forfeiture.
He has crossed a fundamental line that shows himself to be incapable of holding a rational discussion. Excuses like “it was just a little levity” count for nothing. Those are the remarks of a troll. The individual has shown that he is not willing to make a good faith effort to abide by the terms of Internet discussions, and there is no point in discussing anything with him–either ever or at least until he seriously and sincerely acknowledges just how far over the line he was.
Discussion over.
James, you lose.
If you were Catholic, I’d tell you to go to confession.
What you did was vile, unacceptable, and childish. You have reduced yourself to the status of a troll.
If you can’t immediately see that and make amends then no one, knowing that you are capable of this, should engage you in debate or discussions of any kind.
**UPDATE: **The above pictures are so vile, particularly in light of 9/11 and the ensuing history and those who have been threatened or killed by radical Muslims, that this should be a matter upon which individuals of all confessional affiliations should be able to agree, including Evangelicals. I would like to invite Evangelicals, including those who have been close to White, to both publicly and privately distance themselves from the actions of Mr. White in posting these pictures as an act fundamentally incompatible with Christian charity. Evangelicals, in particular, can play a spiritual service to White by making this clear to him, since as the pictures themselves illustrate, he is deaf to appeals to charity from Catholics.

Inflammatory as this topic may be, I fully expect every post on it to set the highest example of charity. By no means allow yourselves to descend to a similar level.

Thank you to Catholic Answers Forums for this opportunity to post what I would have liked to post in response to Jimmy Akin’s fine blog:

James White’s behaviour makes me need to http://bestsmileys.com/puking/5.gif.

:mad:Disgraceful behaviour, Mr White; shame on you!!!
The most charitable thing I can say, is that he must be mentally disturbed. There is no other possible excuse for this kind of post.
I am thoroughly disgusted that anyone who claims the Name of Christ, should use such tactics.

And as for claims of “levity”?? Well. As my Mama would have said: “T’aint funny, McGee!!” T’aint funny at all.

I don’t understand why he would even want to run the risk of even scandalizing. How come he would post pictures like that? What if someone who lost someone at 9/11 saw the pictures? What would they say to James White?

What would Christ say to James White?

Charity is 1 Cor 13. I do not see how what James White is doing is charity.

at the end of the page, it says "–in the defense and confirmation of the gospel ".

Is this for the Gospel or for personal reason?😊

Whether you are a Catholic, a non-Catholic or a Muslim, pray for him. He needs it.

All I can say is, I’m glad I switched sides and crossed the Tiber, if I were still an Evangelical, I would be deeply humiliated by Mr. Whites attempt at humor. 😦 Only those whose hearts have been hardened would find these pictures remotely amusing. I think Mr. White needs our prayer more than our debate at this stage. :signofcross:

It does say something, to see what he thinks is  “humorous…”:nope::nope:

Bitterness of the heart is a sad condition, & since that is what I see in Mr White’s blog, I agree!!:byzsoc: :gopray2: :gopray2: :crossrc:

Things are pretty hot on the blog. It amazes me that there are people actually defending those pictures and Mr. White’s use of them. Can’t understand why the Catholics would take such offense, it was all in fun.

The only thing that comes to my mind right now is the verse: Jesus wept.

It is unfortunately not surprising to me to see that from James White.

I will have to side with Jimmy on this one and encourage no one to engage in discussion with him until he can show some semblance of rationale. I am reminded of Titus 3:10. And in the meantime, I will pray for Mr. White! 👍

I think it’s pretty sad when someone doctors a photo that they know full well is going to be offensive and inflammatory by portraying others as something that they are not.

IMO, the use of these doctored pictures, (which in this case will indeed be worth more than a thousand words!) is in extreme poor taste (at least!) and incomprehensibly mean spirited, (and again, this is being kind in the extreme myself). I really don’t think they are reasonably defensible in the same sense that saying they are meant to be humorous is like a pastor, preacher, or priest offering a dirty joke and then trying to say it’s just humor. Would any rational person buy into that? I wouldn’t.

In the past, I’ve tried to take this man’s comments about our faith with a grain of salt. I don’t think I’ll be able to do that anymore. It’s going to make it very very hard for me (personally) to ever consider James White as anything more than a polemicist from now on.

There is a danger for apologists to let their zeal become bitter and devoid of charity.

As I have always stated, we can disagree without being disagreeable. It is sad that James White not only disagrees, but is disagreeable as well. I don’t think dialogue will happen with him anytime soon with such an attitude, and that is the saddest part of all. We try to achieve Christian unity, but sometimes it is discouraging when we see that there doesn’t seem to be much improvement or advance towards that goal.

managing to deeply offend and insult two major religions in at once is quite an on-line achievement for Mr. White. I’ve long sinced stopped giving the time of day to these folks, Jimmy Akin is a lot stronger, more resilient, patient and charitable than I could ever be.

Who or what was James White?
Exactly! I can’t see any good coming from debates, as God speaks to individual hearts one at a time. The result is much the same as many political debates-much heat and little light. We have the LIGHT of the world. Our reaction may enlighten him to what Christ meant when he said “Peace” behind the closed doors.

Christ’s peace to all who read this.

We shall know them by their fruits.

Here’s my challenge to any James White fans out there—pick up any book written by Pope Benedict XVI / Cardinal Ratzinger and compare its tone and argumentation style to James White: which sounds more like Christ?

I cannot imagine the Lord mocking the concept of Christian charity.

We must seriously question those who claim to speak for God and yet say and do such things so obviously unlike Him.

Not that I plan on going over there… but did I actually read that someone said people are defending this?

um…

k…

In Christ

Not to defend White since he probably can’t be defended on this one, but he has used one of those pictures before, in his 06/25/2007 blog post:

“Outrage Over the DL [Dividing Line] Not Airing for a Full Week!”

In light of White dealing with Muslims recently on his blog and in debates, I thought the picture on his blog (with the Arabic sign) was somewhat humorous, at least that time: “Outrage was expressed by fans all across the world that the DL will not be airing all of this week! Authorities have tried to calm the maddened crowds of DL fans by assuring them that next week will be worth the wait! OK, ok, not quite.”

The other picture about “Beheading” was used in his 06/21/2007 blog post “The Religion of Perpetual Outrage” referring to Isalm and Mormon scholar Peterson’s book Muhammad: Prophet of God.

Not that I read his blog 🙂 but I remember seeing those pictures before so I checked his archives and he’s used them in another context.

As for St. John Chrysostom on St. Peter (his latest blog post on Matt 16:18-19), you can read a full rebuttal written 100 years ago by John Chapman on my site. With over 90 passages examined, Chapman shows what this great eastern saint really thought of St. Peter. 👍
