Re: The CROSS

I have a book in front of me “The HARP OF GOD” c. 1924 “Proof Conclusive that Millions now Living will never Die”

check out page 114 - *has a most beautiful ink drawing of Our Precious Lord on the CROSS, with hands outstretched. very lovely and well done indeed, would make an outstanding print I would be extremely proud to have on my wall.

This book is printed by the
International Bible Students Association
Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.

BIG PROBLEM: IF the International Bible Students are CORRECT in 1924 in saying the LORD died on a CROSS, as the forerunners of the WTBTS, Then how can they say “stake” a few years later as the WTBTS>😊

If the WT claims it is “God’s reliable mouthpiece and prophet to the nations…”, THEN WHY THE CONFUSION on an issue there is abundant archeological evidence of???

Help me out people, which scripture points to those who are enemies of the cross?
(is it in Hebrews?)

IF you can’t trust them with the “little” things, how can you trust them with the “BIG” things.:o*

???The JW bible???

Really???

It’s caddy wompus. So what else is new?

It’s incomplete.
It’s modified.
It’s abridged.
It’s changed.
It’s altered.

It can hardly be called a bible in the truest sense.

It’s a transmutation not a translation.

Saying “the JW bible” is like saying “the Mormon bible” or The Urantia Book".

Please.🤷

Ok well every one is entitled to their own opinion, you certainly have yours
The evidence is kind of overwhelming.
“A rose by amy other name is still a rose.”
A JW by any other name is still a JW.
Have a nice day while insulting more of your friends.
You haven`t answered a few of my questions…🤷

The JWs make use of “Vine`s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words”, published in 1940.

Under “Cross, Crucify”, Vine says:
<A-1,Noun,4716,stauros"
denotes, primarily, " an upright pale [NOT A TYPO]
“transmutation”…How about “mutulation” or “transmutulation” or “travesty”?
[/QUOTE]

That`s tragically true; but being able to rattle off Scripture verses is no guarantee of being right.
…so true. Even the devil quoted Scripture, when tempting Jesus during His fast in the desert. 😉

What questions?
If I thought I would get an answer from YOU instead of you just “rattling off”
“more of the same old same” (insults, insinuations) I would.
Such behaviour is not the way to argument a cause; on the contrary, it demeans it!
One can be passionate about one’s religion, when defending his/her beliefs, without being insulting to another persons Faith.
This is called “common courtesy”.
In answer to your insinuations against myself.
…quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur = what is asserted without reason may be denied without reason…
Please do not answer with the old “tit for tat” approach:
(quid pro quo = do ut des (“I give, so that you may give” or “this for that” )
Have a nice day.

If you think ive been offensive, you should set a good example by following our Lords directive about doing unto others. In other words, you, yourself, shouldn`t engage in “tit for tat”.

Almost all of my “nasty” comments have been directed at the WBTS, rather than at individual members. Why are you, personally, so upset when WBTS tricks are publicly exposed? Can you answer that?

To reinforce something: the WBTSs own literature is full of lies about us. Have you read "You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth'? If you havent, Post # 93 has examples.
Can anyone explain the lies? Poor scholarship?.. or… Outright lies knowingly propagated by the WBTS? It`s one or the other…or both.

As far as i know, the only accusation on Posts # 79 and 80 that i didn`t answer was the True Cross splinters one. Con men! Relics are NOT to be sold, let alone fake ones!
You made no reasoned replies to my responses.
That’s an impressive list, for one who was never a Witness. Goodbye.
The meaning of that statement still hasn`t been explained. Was he washing his hands of me because i should have become a WBTS member after reading all of that literature?

Another question i`ve asked you a number of times is: Does the WBTS teach that the Catholic Church denies the** BODILY **resurrection?

Seeing you know so much about the WBTS, i thought youd be able to answer those above questions. Why wont you answer them?

Did you click on those two links @ Post # 90?

PS
Your posts tend to be difficult to read: inconsistent quoting…

CROSS

www.caic.org.ua/jus/cross/chapter5html

“The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures” c. 1969 by WTBTS of PA says on pages 1155 to 1157 a discussion on why we should refer to the implement Christ Jesus died on was a “torture stake”.

On page 1156 shows ONLY 1 picture from Justus Lipsius’ book “De Cruce Liber Primus” showing Christ on a stake. There are many (14?) drawings of Christ including an X - shaped device; Did they bank on their people not to find this book? GOOGLE it up. The Jesus is Yahweh bloodspot site shows the multiple drawings. There is a copy in Australia that this site draws it’s pictures from.

WHY the u-turn from the history & promotion of this “torture stake” idea & deny centuries of archeological evidence, belief of the Early Christians so easily seen?

CROSS #3

from “The Faith of the Early Fathers” vol. 1 by W. A. Jurgens

early on:

Letter of Barnabas
[ca.A.D. 70/79 or 117/132] probably of Alexandrian origin.
extant in original Greek in the biblical Codex Sinaiticus (4th Century).
also Greek manuscripts
extant in Latin (3rd Century)

“Furthermore, when He was crucified He was given gall and sour wine to drink.”

St Ignatius of Antioch

“Letter to the Trallians” [ca. A.D. 110]
“Turn a deaf ear, then, when anyone speaks to you apart from Jesus Christ,… was truly persecuted under Pontius Pilate, was truly crucified and dies in the sight of those in heaven and on earth and in the underworld,…’”

"Letter to the Phiadelphians [ca. A.D. 110]
“…But to me, the official record is Jesus Christ; the inviolable record is His cross, His death, and His resurrection, and the faith which He brings about;- in these I desire to be justified by your prayers.”

The word CROSS mentioned by St. Ignatius about A.D. 110 in this historical document.

There are hundreds more examples that exist. For anyone to say other than cross is simply more than poor, lazy scholarship, it’s a deliberate falsification of historical facts.
WHY SO? Why the scripture twisting?

early on:…

Theyd say that he meant a stake…thats if they even accept him, and they probably dont.
They harp on and on about the Greek word “stauros”. Their “stake” belief is built on that word: that`s what they claim, anyway.
The apostate Catholic leadership introduced the idea of “the cross” to make the pagans happy. See Post # 98.

Anything to distance themselves from the rest of us:
“…a people set apart…”: Deuternomy 7:6.

Did you read my blab at post # 98 about WE Vine?
…so true. *** Even the devil quoted Scripture***, when tempting Jesus during His fast in the desert. 😉
Thats one truth ive kept in my mind for the next time the door-knockers come; but they haven`t been here for years! 🤷

The Watchtower has MORE THAN the “New World Translation” that it has PROMOTED in recent years.

“THE BIBLE in Living English” published by the WTBTS c. 1972 with 225,000 copies as of 1981; on page 1379 says of John 8:58:

"Jesus said to them “Verily, verily I tell you, before there was an Abraham I am.”

NWT 1984 editions (total printing of the complete New World Translation in all editions to 1986: 48,000,000); on page 1341 says of John 8:58:

"Jesus said to them: “Most truly I say to YOU, Before Abraham came into existence, I have been.”

Infinite difference in the meaning this verse Jn 8:58, both PUBLISHED by the WTBTS. Sadly, there are more examples.

Throw stones at someone who “has been” vs. throw stones at someone claiming to be GOD!

Which is RIGHT? Which is WRONG? A MAN-MADE MESS I’m afraid!😊
Tragically, one of them IS WRONG putting the faithful and discreet slaves in a dilemma. WT ever explained this?

FINK

Ever seen entertainers spinning plates on poles, running back and forth & keep them going & the audience starts getting excited when one is about to drop? Or an “infinity loop”. See any honest intellectual freedom for these people anyone? Outside the “safety net” of the JW box swirls the accomplices of Satan, by the “Whore of Babylon” & “Christendom”.

Their literature has pre-written ?, discussion topics to insure no deviation from today’s lesson. I’ve read literally a pile of it & get the picture. Immerse yourself in it for long and you don’t feel calm & serene. I had a prof. tell me in college years ago, “Trust the evidence of your senses.” I’ve never forgotten that. However, there is HOPE. “Perfect love cast out all fear.” I truly pray JW’s take this scripture to heart. FEAR is a motivator, but LOVE is a THE BEST MOTIVATOR!😃

Dont forget the term: "Satans wicked system of things".

Also: “Immerse yourself in it for long…”; and you become totally dependent on it! You cant go anywhere else, because youd be like the proverbial fish out of water: you know nothing else! 🤷
It`s like being fed an addictive drug.
I had a prof. tell me in college years ago, “Trust the evidence of your senses.” I’ve never forgotten that.
Good advice: i`ll have to try to remember it! 👍

Yeah, we need to pray… Mea culpa! 😊

If only the JWs on these forums would stop getting themselves banned! They accuse** US **of engaging in abuse, ad homs and all the rest of it…pot calling the kettle black! 😦
If they dont get banned, they just disappear for a while....... One way or the other, its impossible to engage them in anything meaningful. That arrogance must be part of their training…and “knowing” they`re right, i suppose. 🤷

In the late 1990s, a hatred-filled anti-Catholic ex-Catholic JW hissed at me: " You worship IDOLS!"

The purely natural earthly paradise is the be-all-and-end-all; and they wont budge. The Beatific Vision means nothing. Speaking of which: does the WBTS teach that the Catholic Church denies the **BODILY** resurrection? Does it think we believe in "spirit bodies", like it does? i asked theinquisitive (a real puzzle!) and noprem a number of times: no answer. Is a spirit body just a body thats invisible? And God has a spirit body!

PS
i`m seriously considering purchasing a New World Translation just to have as a reference; but there seems to be a number of versions, with and without notes/commentary.
Any advice?

I have a lot to say about bringing in heretical literature and feel this needs to be said.

I’ve purchased different editions, older the better so as to compare. thrift stores best: cheapest, 25, 50 cents, $1 & up. People quit JW or move, pass away, family takes lit & gets rid of it so can really get the gems there. BUT painstakingly slow, years to acquire my “library”. Next, used book stores, internet, yard sales, finally new books. If I have the $, I buy all of it & get it out especially same for their literature - easier to find in public.

after college, went into healthcare & Mormon boss converted many co-workers & backed me into a corner “you’re a Catholic, what do you believe…” Interesting LDS & JW = similar beliefs in each. I never would have guessed but childhood Catechism came roaring back:thumbsup: Little Christian bookstore around the corner got me on my way in research & always grateful to them:D. HAD to have RCC, Christian sources that could explain the nuances in heretical “bibles”, literature I was researching, ex. BoM. Also, had
friends, pastors, Jesuits I studied with, very knowledgeable people helping to build my foundation. One word can dramatically change a meaning of a verse as we all know - some of it very subtle. Know your faith & have backup all over the place.

While into LDS research, moved into NEW AGE & very long story but hooked up with a prominent speaker/author on new age (anti- new age) & found it’s far reaching tenacles all over the diocese & city I was in. We did the job we fell into (group of Catholics), guided by a saintly, retired Jesuit. Seems as Christianity fragments, you see disturbing parallels. Jesus is not God is probably #1 problem in heretical literature; Collected a pile of New Age junk (thrift stores) as well:eek: finally move away from there.

In our city, the Church is all over the place ex. JW’s, LDS, everyone use our hospitals and appreciate our charity on 1 hand & leave literature in the waiting rooms on the other; I’ve found when visiting sick relatives, friends & grab that for my library or dispose of it. Another source is public places in general, dr. waiting rooms, dry cleaners, grab it & get it out of there. I don’t believe in leaving confusion on the table for the theologically undereducated (majority of Catholics & most of America) and unsuspecting to pick up & peruse. I’ll have to will it to someone who does research & not crazy about having it under my roof. Ask the Lord to protect you if and when you bring it into your house. This stuff should be read by only the called & cautious. I rarely show my family any of it; only the theologically learned. Be grounded in the faith and take on the attitude of doing a college term paper when reading it. Don’t let it get you emotionally, keep your balance. If so, put down & walk away. Stay in touch with daily prayer & Eucharistic adoration if possible, don’t take your eyes of the Lord. Never underestimate the power of heretical literature, especially “bibles”. Satan will say 99 truths to slip in 1 lie.

CATHOLICS, including Knights of Columbus, tend to be practical people when answer GOD’S call & get going. CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY feed the hungry, heal the sick, bury the dead etc. & SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY - We are to tell people lovingly the TRUTH about CHRIST JESUS, The FATHER and THE SPIRIT & that includes correcting twisted scripture.👍 Yea for CATHOLIC.COM & forums!!! It’s a great tool.!!:clapping:

The WTBS does not get too much into those areas of what they think the Church teaches. Interestingly, they believe “Jehovah”, the Father, does have a body. In addition, they do not believe that Christ was resurrected with the same body, but with a whole different one, which by definition would profess Reincarnation.

If you can get one, the Kindgom Interlinear of theirs is quite useful. It uses the Westcott/Hort Greek to English translation on the left side of the column, and the New World Translation on the right. It’s amazing how dishonest the “translating” of theirs is when seeing it side by side. These can be pricey, especially the 1969 edition with the purple cover. These can go for over $200, but sometimes less. The 1985 version, which is blue on the cover, can be had for between $50-$150, but I just found one at a used book store last summer for a $1, so they are out there.

As far as a version of the NWT, anything pre 1969 is a good tool to have on hand, as they render Hebrews 1:6 in these versions as “Let all God’s angels worship him.”, instead of "Let all God’s angels do obeisance to him.”

If you can find them, pre NWT bibles that the WTBS printed are quite good to have on hand as well. I have the Amercian Standard version printed by them, as well as some by Edgar Goodspeed that they reprinted. The reason they’re good to have is simply because most modern JW’s don’t even know that they printed them, and it can strike up a conversation about why those versions were okay one year, but faulty the next.

SINCERE THANKS to you both for your detailed responses!

i`m going to have to print off both of your Posts, and re-read, re-read, re-read etc.

As far as JW doctrines concerned, ill probably just stick with “You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth”. Heaven knows there`s enough strange teaching in just that one book. 🤷

Pepband Mom: you`ve certainly done the rounds of the cults! You could join forces with Fr Pacwa! 😃

T More: theres nothing like words from the horses mouth. Don`t ever leave these forums!

A bible printed by the WTBTS which is difficult to find is “The Bible in Living English” which was translated by Steven T. Byington COPYRIGHT, 1972. Total printing as of 1981: 225,000 copies. The big draw is Byington’s use of JEHOVAH & WT printed it but

John 1:1 “At the first there was the Word, and the Word was where God was, and the Word was God.” page 1365

And he is the head of the body, the church, he who is the beginning, the firstborn out of the dead, in order that he may take the first place in every respect, because in him all the fullness was pleased to make its home and through him to reconcile everything to him, making peace through the blood of his cross…” page 1514

You must have put a lot of time into this…

PS
Had to remove your smilies.

C T Russell, the founder was a conman.
Charles Taze Russell was never associated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization, did not believe in such an organization, and preached against such authoritarianism and sectarism. Additionally, he did not believe in the kind of Armageddon preached by the JWs. It is therefore misleading to say he was their founder.

Furthermore, Russell was certainly NOT a conman.
He took out advertisements about being able to grow Miracle Wheat etc…it was a big hoax and exposed in the local dailies.
He “took out” advertisements? In what magazine(s)? Some of the Bible Students who were farmers had purchased some of Kent Stoner’s (who was not associated with Russell or the Watch Tower) Miracle Wheat; after growing some, they notified Russell that they wished to offer it for sale at a price less than Stoner had been selling the wheat, and that they would donate the proceeds to the legal entity, the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Russell put a notice a couple of times in the pages of the Watch Tower of their offer, but he never “took out” any ads,
Since Russell never made such a claim in court, the idea that he lied has to be twisted into anything Russell stated.
