I think that one of the JW strategies is to keep a Person ( subject, potential convert ) engaged in conversation. Even an argument is a sort of communication , so this guy is baiting you. I wouldn’t bite. What you can do is just extol the beauty of your Church 🙂 or stop talking to him. I have had JW friends, and they are very good people. But the ones out proselytizing are trained to annoy. They are not allowed to consider any views other than what they’re trained to spout.

I would be careful about learning anything from them as it will confuse parts of Christianity that you have yet to understand in the proper way. This could lead to believing that perhaps the Church has been wrongly interpreting something and that the JWs have figured it out. This is apparent in your praise of their protest of war. There are Saints that are called equal to the Apostles who were military leaders for a reason. When wars are being declared on our Christian Nations by Muslims and Atheists, we have a duty to protect our innocent women and children by sacrificing ourselves. Christ said that greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. So we fight not for our own life, but for others. JWs are hypocrites, they take, take, take, but do not give. They will use the law force and military to protect themselves all day but forbid their members to participate as police officers or military. It is unfortunate that the US seems to be making bad decisions about military, so personally I would not join the military or advise Christians to join the military right now, but a time might come where it would be very Christ-like to do so, if the right war breaks loose.

He started citing all these views from the New Catholic Encyclopedia, The Catholic Dictionary, The Athanasian Creed, Fr Edmund Fortman’s “The Triune God,” (which I knew nothing about), etc. I know that this guy is getting all this stuff from the Jehovah’s Witness booklet “Should You Believe in the Trinity.”
JW’s are known for taking quotes out of context making them seem to say what they want it to say.

Catholic Encyclopedia's and Dictionaries Protestant but goes through misquotes by JW Trinity booklet. Link has Catholic Encyclopedia 1912, 1965 and Catholic Dictionary 1960 correct Catholic quotes.

http://www.towerwatch.com/Witnessing/question_for_jehovahs_witnesses.htm 65 questions for JW’s on NWT.

I suggest when you answer a question, ask a question. If he doesn’t answer then don’t answer his next question but ask another as he does.

I like talking to JW They do read their Bible very frequently and are familiar with it, unlike some Catholics I know.
Actually JW do not read the bible on their own they are not allowed to. They only read what is presented in their weekly Watchtower magazine. At their meetings they roll play the issues presented in the Watchtower that week. How to speak, what questions to ask, ignore or answer if able.

“Have No Dealings With Apostates, … For example, what will you do if you receive a letter or some literature, open it, and see right away that it is from an apostate? Will curiosity cause you to read it, just to see what he has to say? You may even reason: `It won’t affect me; I’m too strong in the truth. And besides, if we have the truth, we have nothing to fear. The truth will stand the test.’ In thinking this way, some have fed their minds upon apostate reasoning and have fallen prey to serious questioning and doubt.” (Watchtower, March 15, 1986 p12) http://www.bible.ca/Jw-NWT.htm

“A mature Christian must be in unity and full harmony with fellow believers as far as faith and knowledge are concerned. He does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to Bible understanding. Rather, he has complete confidence in the truth as it is revealed by Jehovah God through his Son, Jesus Christ, and 'the faithful and discreet slave.” (Watchtower, 2001, August 1, p.14)

“We all need help to understand the Bible, and we cannot find the Scriptural guidance we need outside the ‘faithful and discreet slave’ organization.” The Watchtower, Feb. 15, 1981.
[The Bible is a sealed book except to the organization. WT 7/1/1973, p. 402 [66 Index of Watch Tower Errors, David A Reed, editor compiled by Steve Huntoon & John Cornell, Baker Book House Grand Rapids, Michigan 49516]

[“… from among the ranks of Jehovah’s people … haughty ones … say that it is sufficient to read the Bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home. But, strangely, through such ‘Bible reading,’ they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom’s clergy were teaching 100 years ago…” WT 8/15/1981, pp. 28-29 [67 Index of Watch Tower Errors, David A Reed, editor compiled by Steve Huntoon & John Cornell, Baker Book House Grand Rapids, Michigan 49516].

The question to ask a JW would be what are those doctrines reverted back to be, the trinity, Jesus is God, the bodily resurrection of Our Lord and God Jesus Christ, hell, immortal soul etc? So the WT thinks reading the scriptures without their WT traditions of men, made doctrines of God, will lead one into darkness.

Isn’t that a strange admission, I agree reading scripture exclusively will lead you away from the WT and towards God. This is one time they have it right. Seems the WT doesn’t trust scripture or for that matter their own doctrines to be found there. They know reading the bible exclusively, apart from the WT traditions of men, will lead to truth and out of their darkness of false teachings and endless false prophecy.

I still think that they know the Bible better than Catholics do, speaking generally that is and admitting for exceptions. For example, when they were at my door I mentioned that the idea that God made the sun stand still in the sky would not be accepted by scientists today, they knew the exact book and citation, chapter and verse, where that was found. Or when I mentioned that God was walking in a garden, they also knew that. Or the parable of the fig tree. Try asking that to a Catholic at your local church and see if they know where to find that in their Bible., i.e., the book, chapter and verse.

When JWs come I will just tell them that I am blessed and happy to be Catholic and that I am not interested in debating.

We need to pray for people who have been deceived.

Sometimes I get caught when one of those JW’s are going door to door. I just shut the door on them and tell them to stop. I don’t have the patience anymore… and i’m only in my thirties! lol

Not many JWs can do that, just a few, for it is a trait which belongs to a particular type of individual, not a particular type of faith. I also used to be able to do that too. People would debate and say isn’t it written somewhere, to which I would locate for them fairly quickly. Then after 20 years I got a new Bible, suddenly nothing was on the same page nor on the same place on the page, all the markers were gone.

I decided in order for me to get to heaven, I would have to preserve my old Bible as best I can, because when I get there and Jesus Christ says “Where is it written …” as my entry test into heaven I could hand back the Bible Jesus Christ gave me, pull out my own, and pass with merit. Well done.

Then Jesus Christ would say “verses?” I never gave you verses, here is a scroll.

And then Jesus Christ would say, it’s not in English it is in Hebrew with parts in Aramaic.

I hope you didn’t think that was in the Bible:grinning:

But again please understand my point.

My point is what on earth does this have to do with anything in the grand scheme of anything?

What does the Bible have to do with anything in the grand scheme of anything? It is the Holy Scriptures, divinely inspired containing both the Holy Scriptures of the Jews and the New Testament. It is something that I find the JW are familiar with quite well. Being a record of the relationship between God and man, it is considered to be quite important, if not essential, in our understanding of the grand scheme of God’s love for mankind and man’s response to that love. I don’t think that a JW would ever ask why the Bible is important.

Book chapter and verse for this too.

Do you have a book chapter and verse for that?
Book chapter and verse for this too.
Apparently, by your comments, you do not think it is important to put the time, effort, and study into being aquainted with the various books, stories and passages of the Bible thoroughly, completely and in depth. This is where I think you might differ from the JW that I have spoken with.
