Hi Fidei,
Did you say you went to a convention? You would have noticed
the Bible was used constantly. The Watchtower articles constantly quote
the Bible to explain or confirm things. (Using various translations freely – before anyone claims we only use the NWT)
Regardless, I say this in all humility, but…various translations are notused freely. Onlythe NWT is used during meetings, assemblies and conventions. If they didn’t, they’d be disproving their own doctrine (see John 1)
The witnesses won’t be very interested in catholic literature, just as they won’t be too interested in what Russel believed 100 years ago or what early WT articles understood.
Of course they wouldn’t be interested in Russell’s teachings or old WTS articles. In most cases, they teach the total opposite of what the WTS teaches today.
Only what the Bible really says.
The WT is not inspired by God, nor was Russel a prophet.
**“Consider, too, the fact that Jehovah’s organization alone, in all the earth, is directed by God’s holy spirit or active force. (Zech. 4:6) Only this organization functions for Jehovah’s purpose and to his praise. To it alone God’s Sacred Word, the Bible, is not a sealed book. Many persons of the world are very intelligent, capable of understanding complex matters. They can read the Holy Scriptures, but they cannot understand their deep meaning. Yet God’s people can comprehend such spiritual things. Why? Not because of special intelligence on their part, but as the apostle Paul declared: “For it is to us God has revealed them through his spirit, for the spirit searches into all things, even the deep things of God.”” Watchtower 1973 July 1 p.402
“The Watchtower is not the instrument of any man or set of men, nor is it published according to the whims of men. No man’s opinion is expressed in The Watchtower. God feeds his own people, and surely God uses those who love and serve him according to his own will. Those who oppose The Watchtower are not capable of discerning the truth that God is giving to the children of his organization, and this is the very strongest proof that such opposers are not of God’s organization.” Watchtower 1931 Nov. 1 p.327
“It is vital that we appreciate this fact and respond to the directions of the “slave” as we would to the voice of God, because it is His provision.” Watchtower 1957 June 15 p.370
…there are many, many more…
And I agree, Russell, is no prophet. The man never got one prediction right. Rutherford didn’t either (see Millions Now Living Will Never Die).
**
The Bible is God’s word. ***Jesus said: “Your word is truth.” ***(John 17:17) The Bible is the foundation.
It seems a common misunderstanding that we believe things because “the WT said…” or “Russel said…”
Hence, I often hear people trying to discredit these, assuming this will erode our faith. They must think that is the basis of our beliefs. Not so.
For example, if you ask a witness: “Why don’t you believe God is a trinity?” The answer
will not be: “Because Charles Taze Russel didn’t believe so” or “Because the WT says.”.
The answer will be “Because the Bible says…”
Again, the WTS’s bible, the NWT. Hence the reason they had to come up with their version. Their previous version, the American Standard (as well as the KJV) refuted much of what they teached. This obviously would create a bit of a problem when going door to door when some they would come across some who would be using the same bible and refute what they were saying. Think about it. What other reason would you need to come up with own version?
They will have studied the Bible, probably for years, and are now totally convinced the Trinity is not what it teaches. It should be the same for most subjects of difference.
This is true, if your using your own version. Does anyoneoutside the WTS use the NWT? No.
I hope this helps with your discussions. All the best.
