Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno (the “Pope’s Astronomer”) is first religious brother to receive this prestigious science award.
** Wait, What? Carl Sagan Was NOT an Atheist?**
Anyway, I learned that Carl Sagan most definitely was not an atheist, although he would fall into the “agnostic” camp.
… and to this DAY he sometimes uses two “I’s” in a sentence!FWIW, I won the Bausch and Lomb Science Award when I was in high school.
Sagan also commented on Christianity, stating
"My long-time view about Christianity is that it represents an amalgam of two seemingly immiscible parts, the religion of Jesus and the religion of Paul.
Thomas Jefferson attempted to excise the Pauline parts of the New Testament.
There wasn’t much left when he was done, but it was an inspiring document."[67]
OK. This IS better than my jocular snarkiness. It really is heartening when the secular world recognises the value of the work of a dedicated religious scientist. It helps break down the perception that religion and science aren’t compatible.
I find that quote a bit funny. The religion of Jesus was Judaism so it would have been different from the early Christianity of Paul.… and to this DAY he sometimes uses two “I’s” in a sentence!
What is an Astroometer … and how is it pronounced? Is this a serious honor or something akin to being named Mad Magazine’s “Man of the Year” given that
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan < quote above is from … Wikipedia![]()
You got me.… and to this DAY he sometimes uses two “I’s” in a sentence!![]()
Yes, but Carl Sagan really didn’t give out this medal.Whether or not Sagan belived in God while he was alive is irrelevant because he certainly believes now.
On the last day of our High School Senior Class, per tradition all of the Sisters (teachers) left the building for three hours and appointed one trustedFWIW, I won the Bausch and Lomb Science Award when I was in high school.
And they say the Catholic Church does not support science.Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno (the “Pope’s Astronomer”) is first religious brother to receive this prestigious science award.
I don’t think the Catholic Church suppressed the Jesuits because of their advances in science. And they say the Catholic Church does not support science.
You’ve spoken of the suppression of the Jesuits before in this tone but retrospect has exonerated the Jesuits and indicted European politics of the times that the Church was overly beholden to. It’s unfortunate that it still continues in some areas, to taint the magnificient history of St Ignatius’ Jesuit mission.I don’t think the Catholic Church suppressed the Jesuits because of their advances in science.
Fair enough, but couldn’t the same (or almost the same) can be said for the likes of Galileo et al? In fact, in his book “How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization” Woods points out that Fr Christopher Clavius and his fellow Jesuit astronomers had confirmed Galileo’s discoveries. It’s in the chapter on “The Church and Science,” and a very good read. You’ve spoken of the suppression of the Jesuits before in this tone but retrospect has exonerated the Jesuits and indicted European politics of the times that the Church was overly beholden to. I wasn’t talking about the Catholic Church. Many Anti-Catholics try to say that Catholics try to oppose science.I don’t think the Catholic Church suppressed the Jesuits because of their advances in science.

Right. It’s not only Catholics, though, and much of that has nothing to do with Jesuits per se.I wasn’t talking about the Catholic Church. Many Anti-Catholics try to say that Catholics try to oppose science.
