Jesus is God?

Planten,

I would be glad to discuss with you. Of course in my initial post my statements are directed at a Catholic who doesn’t understand his faith and speaking to him on that basis. If I were to discuss with you it would be on a different basis since you are muslim. The bottom of the argument or its base would be different since we do not have an agreed upon source of authority. First we would need to establish that authority and move on debating. Your authority is the Koran Mine is two fold the Church and the Scriptures known as the bible. You question why the Catholic Church taught as it did and I will be more than glad to explain it to you if you are truely interested. If your just using this discussion as a platform as an attempt to brow beat Church members to your point of view discussion fails and argument insues. Which is futile and fruitless. Reasoned debate is acceptable but I’m not sure you want to do that. Give me assurances that it is and we can discuss.

No. I will just find my answers somewhere where people are more compassionate.
Most of us have been very polite, but you are focusing on the very few who have been sarcastic toward you. That seems unfair.😦 So, it doesn’t matter to you to find TRUTH, you want acceptance for what you already believe.

You wonder why some people doubt your story. Imagine this. You are in a math class and the teacher has spent the entire nine months teaching you basic addition. During summer vacation, one of your classmates announces that the reason that she can’t add two numbers together is because your teacher never taught her to do so! You would be frustrated also.

The Catholic Church is all about the Incarnation, God made flesh, that is everywhere in our faith. The fact that you missed it means that, for whatever reason, you were simply going through the motions of mass and ignoring the underlaying meaning.

I am not trying to be mean or rude to you and I hope that I don’t come across. Don’t you think that before you leave a faith that your ancestors died for that you should learn what that faith actually teaches? If you are going to leave Catholicism, at least be brave enough to leave the TRUE Catholicism and not something that you don’t understand.🙂

Jastor, You ask this question because you are searching for explanations of truth through knowledge. Although I’m muslim, I’ve asked the same questions you did to christians and received similar answers. The simple answer is that they believe Jesus is God becuase the bible implies it. It’s ironic though how such an important concept is not explicitly stated in the Bible. Jesus according to paul/mathew/john/luke ect… should have made it clear and said explicity “I am the lord” or something similar so as to clear any ambiguities or questions…
I just dont understand. if it was Jesus=God why is it not clearly put? Why all the parables? Didnt Jesus talk plainly? Its confusing?
Why are some things so contradictory to one another? Is one gospel more reliable than the other?

Thank you for your help!
Despite some poster “doubts” about the truth of my post. I am being honest and am printing many posts so I can go back over and look things up!

Good.🙂 Searching for truth is difficult and painful. I’ve been there, so I know. Just keep praying.

Maybe you can go back over the entire first four books of the Gospel. Also look up all the Bible verses that you have been given. 🙂

I am praying for you jastor.

The Incarnation is beautiful. Think how deeply God loves us. He not only became man but he died for us. He must love us very much.

Thank you for your help!

Just so you understand that particular post was for Planten not you specifically. Also the gospels are not superior one from another. What you have are 4 different perspectives of the events that occured. They are related not on a chronilogical basis as much as a theological one.
Ie… Mark was writing (probalbly the first gospel writen) what Peter told him of the events of Jesus’ life
Matthew was writing to a Jewish audience but probably used Mark as an outline.
Luke: was more investigative and he asked many different witness to what the truth of the matter was.
John was writing (the last to be writen) from a personal perspective and wanted to deal with specific issues of his day.

Their emphasis would be different since their approaches are different but it doesn’t change the truth of what they are saying.

No. I will just find my answers somewhere where people are more compassionate.
Compassionate? I have only seen a few people who could be considered rude. If I am, please tell me where.

If you are expecting us to feel sorry, we can’t. People are trying to help.

Again, I would like to help if I can, but I need to know what you already believe and what do you already know. I can’t begin unless I know from where. I need to understand how you interpret things.

Wasn’t Paul the only one who wrote about Jesus as God? Why didn’t any of the others write about that?

** deb1, I feel that jastor is justified in feeling hurt because jastor is a Catholic and some people are suggesting that jastor is a TROLL. It is quite bad. Why to attack some one with such things. Even though they be few, it is bad because every one has seen that accusation now.

Now according to your para two and three above, it is the basic belief of the church. Jastor knows and admits that. But belief must be rational, understandable, sustainable. Nobody can just have a belief only without any legs to stand upon. I give the example of the pagans who worship the idols. They also have beliefs, real beliefs that those idols help them to get near to God. What would you say about those pagans??

Associating any one with God is a very serious matter. All the good deeds of the person get ruined because of associating any one with God. You people are not only associating Jesus with God but also making him a God. Only the Catholics can understand that theology, methodology. Others will not swallow that bitter pill.

I see geometer also telling:

Wasn’t Paul the only one who wrote about Jesus as God? Why didn’t any of the others write about that?**

We believe that Saul of Tarsus was the one who went against the real teachings of Jesus (The blessed one sent by God).

Compassionate? I have only seen a few people who could be considered rude. If I am, please tell me where.

If you are expecting us to feel sorry, we can’t. People are trying to help.

** katy, jastor had asked a good question. Who said “Jesus is God?” “Is it in the bible?” Jastor wants to see where it is in the bible that Jesus claimed to be God. None of the polite Catholics have given any reasonable reply.

All the Catholics repeat is “I am what I am.” or “Father and i are one.” or (doubting) Thomas said, “My god, My Lord.” But Jesus never said that he was a god nor did his mother Mary say any such thing. None of the disciples said that Jesus was God. So the question stands.

The best information is found in Mathew where the elders of the Jews accused Jesus to the son of God. They did not accuse Jesus to be God. They charged Jesus with blasphemy for calling himself the son of God. So, please let us leave it at that. There is no harm in saying that Jesus considered himslef as the son of God. That is all. He never said that he was God and he was not charged for that too.

So, please can we leave this matter of Jesus being the God. Otherwise bring something good from the bible, not just conjectures. Limit your self to the first four gospels because those gospels really describe the only three year life story of Jesus.

Please see verses of Mathew chapter 26:

Before the Sanhedrin Mathew 26:
57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.

Finally two came forward 61and declared, "This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ "

62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63But Jesus remained silent.
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ,[e] the Son of God.”

64"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” **
In the aove verses, jews were looking for some fault in Jesus but there was none. It means Jesus had never claime dthat he was God. He was a Jew and a greta Jew. He could never utter such bad words as the Catholics are suggesting to us. Read the Gospel of mathew above. The most that the chief priest could charge Jesus with was about he being the son of God and being Christ. That was all teh big priest could do.

Jesus was asked by that big priest under oath if he was the Christ, the son of God. Jesus did not reply in affirmative, such as “Yes I am the Christ, son of God and the God almighty.” He said 'It is as you said." That has no meaning. What the chief priest had said is not fully described in the bible. It appears that Jesus is admitting some (Unknown) thing under duress.

Apologize for the late reply
Who said “Jesus is God?”
Jesus did, the Gospel writers did etc.
“Is it in the bible?”
Yes
Jastor wants to see where it is in the bible that Jesus claimed to be God. None of the polite Catholics have given any reasonable reply.
They have given reasonable answers. The issue is that you are looking for Jesus saying “I am God, worship me”. Any phrase that means the same, to you, is considered unacceptable.
All the Catholics repeat is “I am what I am.” or “Father and i are one.” or (doubting) Thomas said, “My god, My Lord.”
The phrase for the first and last is “Before Abraham, I AM” and “My Lord and my God”
But Jesus never said that he was a god
Jesus said, “Before Abraham, I AM” which means that he is God.
nor did his mother Mary say any such thing.
The Bible isn’t a recording of every word every person utters.
None of the disciples said that Jesus was God. So the question stands.
But St. Thomas said “My Lord and my God”, when he realized that the person in front of him was Jesus. You could argue he was just exclaiming, but unlike now where people seem to not mind uttering God’s name without reason, during those times when the law was strictly to be followed, saying God out of an exclamation was not acceptable (You shall not take the name of your Lord, your God, in vain).
Sure they accused him for being the Son of God, but to them he has taken the title too far and beyond simply a title of spirituality, claiming that he has powers that only God has, such as the forgiveness of sins.
So, please can we leave this matter of Jesus being the God. Otherwise bring something good from the bible, not just conjectures. Limit your self to the first four gospels because those gospels really describe the only three year life story of Jesus.
The ones that people have quoted are all from the first four Gospels.
Please see verses of Mathew chapter 26:
In the aove verses, jews were looking for some fault in Jesus but there was none. It means Jesus had never claime dthat he was God. He was a Jew and a greta Jew. He could never utter such bad words as the Catholics are suggesting to us. Read the Gospel of mathew above. What the chief priest had said is not fully described in the bible. It appears that Jesus is admitting some (Unknown) thing under duress.
How does “It is as you said”, meaningless? That is an affirmative, an admission that the accusation is true. You have simply brushed the statement and claimed that he was admitting to some unknown thing. No, he was admitting to what the accuser said that he is Christ, the Son of God.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light. 9 That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name. 13 Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15 John beareth witness of him, and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me, is preferred before me: because he was before me.

16 And of his fulness we all have received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18 No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. 19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou? 20 And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.

Christians consider Jesus (pbuh) to be God on the basis of:

Jesus’ pre-existence as stated in John 8:58;

Jesus said unto them, ‘Verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.’”

The idea of pre-existence is not unique to Jesus even in the Bible. Pre-existence was mentioned in relation to Solomon (Proverbs 8:23-27), to Job (Job 38:4 and 21) and to Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:4-5).

The Qur’an states in Surah Al-A’raaf (7):172 “When your Lord gathered all of Adam’s descendants (before creation) and made them bear witness for themselves…”

We thereby know that ALL men were created in spirit before the creation of the physical world. Jesus (pbuh) was not unique in this pre-existence and cannot claim divinity because of it.

Sambos;
Re: Jesus is God?

Planten,
I would be glad to discuss with you. Of course in my initial post my statements are directed at a Catholic who doesn’t understand his faith and speaking to him on that basis. If I were to discuss with you it would be on a different basis since you are muslim. The bottom of the argument or its base would be different since we do not have an agreed upon source of authority.
Sambos, I am thankful to you for your consideration. If you explain things, surely I will read it.
First we would need to establish that authority and move on debating. Your authority is the Koran Mine is two fold the Church and the Scriptures known as the bible. You question why the Catholic Church taught as it did and I will be more than glad to explain it to you if you are truely interested.
Yes, that is good. I will be interested in knowing the truth. Please remember that I have read the bibleNT (four gospels). I have read some parts of the bibelot. I believe in all the prophets and all the angels and all the books revealed by God. I do not give much consideration to anything beyond the four gospels. They describe the life story of Jesus, sometime in direct words.
So I do not have to after any other gospel. If there is some other gospel teaching something different then there would be contradiction in the bible.
If your just using this discussion as a platform as an attempt to brow beat Church members to your point of view discussion fails and argument insues. Which is futile and fruitless. Reasoned debate is acceptable but I’m not sure you want to do that. Give me assurances that it is and we can discuss.
**That is not true. I do not intend to harm any one. I have my beliefs based on sound reasoning. The best I can do for you is to listen to you and try to understand what you are saying. I never opposed or abused the Catholics unless I found some non-christian like behaviour here of Muhammad bashing and Islam bashing.

You will, I hope, have no problem from me. But please be reminded that if I am not convinced about your arguments being right and rational, then I will have the right to peacefully, gently reject what you may have said. You will permit for that.

In the meantime, I will not try to disturb you or preach to you about my faith.

Tell me what else I can do for you in return to your good wishes that you have advanced for me. Thanks.**

fbl9, you have cleverly avoided the problem by leaving out some important words of the Luke verses 19: 45-46. Please see the full words of Jesus below. It is telling about something that God had revealed earlier. It is not Jesus himslef saying " My house is a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves." These are words of God in some previous scripture that must be Torah. See below:

45Then he entered the temple area and began driving out those who were selling. 46"It is written,"
he said to them, " ‘My house will be a house of prayer’[c]; but you have made it 'a den of robbers.

Note the words Jesus said, It is written (by God) that my house is house of prayer…

the only you have proven is that,i am a very poor proof reader, thanks for pointing my mistake out…i checked my bible and i did (not on purpose) ommit those words “it is written”…
we look at the words of the the prophet Isaias56:7 we find those words “my house is a house of prayer.”
lookiong at what the prophet Jeremias says 7:11"…Is this house then in which my name hath been called upon in your eyes become a den of robbers? I,I am he: I have seen it,saith the LORD.
from the gospel written by St.Matthew 8:29(explusion of the devils in Gerasa)" And behold they cried out saying"What have we to do with thee,Son of God?Hast thou come here to torment us before the time?"…here we have devils calling Jesus the Son of God.,not a man of God but His Son.
more from St.Matthew,11:27" all things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does any one know the Father except the Son, and him whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

Dear Muslim Women

The site got it wrong. Let me explain:
We thereby know that ALL men were created in spirit before the creation of the physical world.
Not a Christian belief. But what about the Biblical verses quoted? None talks about us preexisting before creation.
The idea of pre-existence is not unique to Jesus even in the Bible.
Wrong, the preexistence shown in this verse (John 8:58, existence before Abraham) is unique to Jesus.
Pre-existence was mentioned in relation… to Job (Job 38:4 and 21).
Job 38
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:
2 “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
**4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.” **

God asks “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.” This does not show any preexistence. The verse actually shows the lack of existence during that time.

Job 38
16 "Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this.
19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness,
20 that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home?
**21 You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!” **

"for you were born then and the number of your days is great.” God is talking of out lack of knowledge about things such as the “expanse of earth” etc in spite of the fact that we exist during all of it.

A side note, the chapter is God poetically reminding us that he exists everywhere and he knows everything and we are very limited in the time of our existence and in knowledge.

None of these verses shows preexistence.
Pre-existence was mentioned in relation… to Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:4-5).
Jeremiah
4 Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,
**5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” **

This doesn’t show existed before creation or to the extent of Jesus. We exist before we are placed in the womb. This is why abortion is considered a sin because we begin at conception. God creates us (at least the soul) before we are formed in the womb, thus killing a child however early in the pregnancy is murder because the child has life and God knew him/her before the child was conceived. This doesn’t talk about preexistence before creation or years before some ancestor.
Pre-existence was mentioned in relation… to Solomon (Proverbs 8:23-27).
I wonder if the place you have quoted from reads verses in the context. Proverb 8:23-27, talks about preexistence and existence during the time creation but the verse is not talking about Solomon, the verse is referring to Wisdom

Proverb 8:1-4,23-27
1 **Does not wisdom call, does not understanding raise her voice? **
2 On the heights beside the way, in the paths she takes her stand;
3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
4 "To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the sons of men.

23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth;
26 before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,"

Wisdom is saying the above quote, not Solomon.
We thereby know that ALL men were created in spirit before the creation of the physical world.
No Biblical verse implies that we exist during the creation. The only person who exist before creation is Jesus, the Word.
