Ronald Regan used to point out that if you considered everyone below the poverty level as having no money at all, and gave them each a check to bring them above the poverty level, it would cost only a fraction of what we spend on “poverty programs” – and yet, they’re still poor.

I have yet to meet a liberal who will defend the “Great Society” and it’s devastating impact on society. Unfortunately, I haven’t met anyone willing to dismantle this monstrosity and try to correct the damage, either.
This applies to the world stage too…
There’s an interview with a Kenyan official who is imploring the West to “Stop the Aid”.
Instead of longterm solutions much of the aid only serves to build an ingrown sense of entitlement and longterm dependence.

Are we doing more harm than good?

We are indeed doing more harm than good – and we merely have to walk into poor areas in this country and see how much harm we have done.

I always recommend areading 1 Titus, Chapter 5, where Saint Paul lays it out for us. He tells us of the negative impact of excessive “charity” on the recipients – and also points that charity is our business – not the government’s.

Yet look how many Catholics support increased government programs – and feel smug about it. We have become a couch potato religion, lying on the sofa and cheering feebly, but doing nothing to move the ball ourselves.
