They were impossible according to the “science” of 2000 years ago, too – everyone at Lazarus’ tomb knew that he was not only dead, but dead long enough to decompose.
The whole point of miracles is that they are extraordinary interventions by God that go against the normal order of things. Science studies that normal order. If miracles could be fitted into that order, they would not be miraculous. Looking again at the story of Lazarus, the text tells us that Jesus deliberately waited longer than necessary to head to Bethany, so that Lazarus would not merely be dead but several days dead. No one was going to mistake that miracle for a lucky rescue of a comatose man who was buried alive.

I have fundamentalist relatives that are so adamant about young earth that they claim God made the earth to look old and even planted dinosaur bones and things for our exploration (saying basically that dinosaurs never lived but God just his bones here and there like a parent hides toys in a sandbox)
