John MacArthur alludes to Purgatory?

I think what would transpire could never be a faceoff type debate because Staples would try to bring in other things as the “Word of God” where Mac would stick with scripture.
Mac can recite scripture … but, he doesn’t ‘understand it’ as thoroughly as Staples. Staples would have no problems clearly refuting Mac in a debate.

Again, Mac is a good evangelist / preacher. I listen to his radio program often. I do think he can be open minded … and is being used of God.

The guy has apparently changed some of his former views. Yes, within the last 2-3 months he is now teaching views opposed to OSAS.
Right, a guy that studies scripture 70+ hours a week, is the head of a theological seminary and maybe the foremost 20th century reformed commentarian is going to change drastically his view on a very clear reformed doctrine…Not likely.
Quit bearing false witness or show some proof.
My previous pastor was his assistant pastor for many years and one thing John doesn’t do is attempt to change hard truth and have his teachable doctrines blow whatever way the wind blows.

It (water baptism) isn’t. Think theif on the cross.
Why, then, does Saint Peter say that baptism does indeed save us? The Church has taught for 2,000 years that there are three ways to be baptized: by water, by desire and by blood. In this case, the good thief had a baptism of desire (by expressing his desire to be with Christ, even though it was presumably too late for a water baptism; this is also the reason why we can believe infants who die before baptism can go to heaven, based on the parents desire to baptize them, but for some intervening cause that prevented it). Martyrs who were not baptized in water and the Spirit, but martyred for Christ, are baptized by blood (i.e., the Holy Innocents). So water baptism is a normative, but not an absolute necessity for salvation.

Would John admit that even through all the hours and years of his study of Scripture that every single one of his interpretations thereof could be wrong? If so, why would he want others to risk their very souls by them possibly adhering to false doctrines that could land them in hell for eternity?

***James 3:[1] ******Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness. ***

Our sinful nature is in our flesh and dies with the flesh.
So our sinful nature resides in our flesh and our soul is unaffected. When we die we shed our flesh and our soul is set free basically? If this is the case, why are not all who die a physical death in heaven? If our sinful nature only resides in our flesh and not our soul everyone would be freed of its effects upon death. Obvioulsy some souls are made perfect others are not, regardless of the flesh.

Actually that sounds a bit like Gnosticism doesn’t it?

The flesh is the old me, when we are born again we are a what? a new creation.
Galatians 2:20 says we are crucified with Christ, therefore our old self does what? dies.

Being born again is not an addition to a sinful self it is a transformation,
I am a new creation in Christ, but that new creation is incarcerated in unredeemed flesh.
See Romans 8 i believe i quoted earlier.

John Mac is ‘evolving’ his beliefs. He is currently at war with many Evangelicals … those of New Age / Wide Grace Theology. He is convinced they have ‘abandoned’ the faith … and become Apostates.

Surely you know that J. Mac subscribes to a ‘firm’ Litmus Test of Faith. Those who reject even a single tenent of it … are no longer OSAS.

Don’t forget the devil and his fallen angels who do not have physical bodies… :o

Yes. He doesn’t term it as “I no longer believe in OSAS” … nevertheless, he now is teaching/preaching this very idea.
MacArthur is a Calvinist and Calvinists never use the OSAS terminology. They use the ‘TULIP’, the ‘P’ of which is ‘perserverance of the saints’. OSAS is not the same as POTS, although they are pretty close. You could say OSAS is a kind of ‘kindergarten’ understanding of the Calvinist doctrine.
He’s not ‘evolving’, he’s just digging deeper into his Calvinist trench. Evangelicals have never liked MacArthur.
He nevertheless is very anti-Catholic and should be avoided.

He is a serious student of the Bible, and a seeker of God’s truth. And, while the Evangelicals may not like him … he does admire their passion for Sola Scripture, and is on a mission to show them their error on many other matters [other than S.S.].

Those who demand a ‘Litmus Test’ of faith … they soon discover that few others read scriptures exactly as they do. This creates enormous angst for them … and they are constantly searching for peace and security. Some, over time, come to see themselves as God’s modern day Prophet. John is not yet to that stage … but, clearly he holds some massive theologic Disconnects. He is spiritually ‘blinded’ to the Catholic faith … and what he doesn’t understand, he attacks.

I love his enthusiasm for scriptures … and he does teach correctly on some matters. Still, he needs to seriously confront Catholicism. It will probably take a close friend of his converting to the Universal Church to cause him to reexamine his ideas on Catholicism. Lets all pray for this talented man … that his world of error will be shaken and his life reorganized.

Is anything too great for our Lord & the Church Triumphant to accomplish ? St. Paul … pray for John Mac.

Romans 7:17
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Back to being closer to the topic…Why would we need purification if…
As scripture says…

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: **old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. **
