John Muir who was born in 1838 is now having their name removed from the Sierra Club That is what I mean by cancel.
Names get removed all the time. That is a pretty light usage of the word “cancel.” By that definition, I was “cancelled” when I left my job for a new one and my name was removed from the desk I occupied, or when my high school removed a trophy from their shelf that had my name on it from a competition I won years after I had won it.
Historical names such as Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, even John Muir tend to stay in society. John Muir help found national parks and that is why he is a historical figure.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I haven’t seen it proposed that these names will be removed from historical record.

Think of it this way.

Who is the worst person in history that you can think of? Can you still find that person’s name in history books?

If we’re going to cancel every figure who wasn’t completely up to date in 2020 when it comes to political correctness we’ll have few figures left. I’m not for cancelling. I’m for educating others about their flaws and positives. I don’t think we should be tearing down statutes of Washington, Marx, Mao, etc.

Ultimately I’m more concerned, however, about removing any insights found in their writings. I’d rather not ‘forget’ about the Federalist Papers, or Das Kapital, etc.

His name is still present in society. Sierra Club, which is a private club, by their own rights and currents beliefs have decided that they no longer want to be associated with him. They are a private club.

Anyone who wants to learn of his life. Can read any of his works. Also anyone can learn about his life through the national park service.

You can take a tour of his house. Visit Muir woods in California. Attend a lecture about him at Yosemite National Park.

John Muir founded the Sierra club.so it seems appropriate that his name is kept but in no, just erase as much as you can so no one will know what these people in history did to bring about greatness.

The Sierra Club is brought up in this piece on the Catholic Answers website.
I know the current Sierra Club has a modern history of population control. I doubt that John Muir born in 1838 was a part of that. Muir was a nature lover who sought forest preservation and helped bring about Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks.

What should we do about President Carter?
We should remember that when he was sworn in as governor of a southern state he said that the time of racial discrimination was over. Regan just opposed all civil rights legislation and let it go at that.

He is not being erased. He is the father of the National Park System. The national Park service manages:
Muir Woods - This is a National Monument. Muir Woods National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)
John Muir House- This is a National Historic site Things To Do - John Muir National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service)
Yosemite National Park - Offers a one man Live play about the life of John Muir. https://www.johnmuirlive.com/

He founded the Sierra Club so why erase his name. They already took down his statue and have pledged 5 million to hire a more diverse staff and invest in environmental and racial justice work.

If his name is taken off and his books no longer promoted, it erases who he is. Little by little all of American history is being taken out.

They are a private club, and can freely chose who they associate with or not. Apparently he doesn’t match the current beliefs of this club
They already took down his statue
So go visit his life size bronze statue at the Yosemite visitor center. On average 4 million people visit Yosemite yearly.

This is really melodramatic. The John Muir House gets an average of 49,376 people / yr. It is honored as a national historic site. This place is all about the life of John Muir. You can even visit his gravesite

John Muir founded the Sierra Club and his books are promoted by the club. It is not melodramatic for people to be tired on this cancellation of historical people . John Muir along with Teddy Roosevelt and a host of other historical figures should be left alone.

The man was born in 1838 a very long time ago and did many great things to bring about conservation.

He is not cancelled he is honored at a National level. If his home was removed as a national historic site, if you couldn’t take guided tour by a national park service ranger to his gravesite,if he no longer had his national monument, if Yosemite no longer taught about his life to their millions of visitors then you’d have a point.

How can you not see that he is honored nationally?

He is not honored by the group which he founded, the Sierra Club.

Yes, these private individuals in this private club can make this choice. But, this private club’s decision to no longer associate with this man does not negate the fact that John Muir is honored at a National level within our country

John Muir started the Sierra Club and historically it is his club. Please stop trying to make light of this as if it does not matter. It matters when historical figures are taken out especially ones born in 1838.

Humans are not perfect and this idea that everyone has to be perfect or else canceled., no.

They have moved John Muir out of his own club to be politically correct. Should Martin Luther King Jr. also be canceled for his anti-gay slurs?
