JON STEWART INSULTS CATHOLICS; YAHOO! NEWS COVERS IT UP

On last night’s episode of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” the host joked about Rep. Anthony Weiner’s situation with correspondent John Oliver. During their skit, Stewart ridiculed Weiner by sipping frantically on a Margarita, imitating the way Weiner sips from a water bottle.

Stewart then accidentally broke his glass. Oliver, seeing Stewart’s hand bleeding, joked, “Don’t be so Jewish about it. You’re fine, you’re absolutely fine.”

On Yahoo! News, in both the video clip and the news story, this is where the skit ends. But on the show, it continued with Stewart replying, “I should be Catholic.” Next, referring to his blood, he offered, “I should turn this into a drink.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments as follows:

Weiner sends porn pictures to strangers and his buddy Stewart laughs it off. This is to be expected as the ethical bar for people like Stewart and Weiner is quite low. But for Stewart to impulsively lash out at the heart of Catholicism—when discussing a subject that has nothing to do with it—reveals a side to him that is troubling. Indeed, it suggests that it doesn’t take much to bring out the worst in Stewart: when the bigotry is visceral, the pus gushes to the surface at the slightest rub. Catholics deserve an apology.

This is an overreaction by the CL.

In life, we all say something we should not sometimes, but he is not attacking our faith
 
This wasn’t a big deal. I hear worse things said about the Church almost daily. I live in the Bible belt and a lot of people say things like this without meaning it as a joke. Thick skin and prayer are good advice. Getting upset about small things like this is a waste of time and emotion.
 
I bet Stephen Colbert would be happy to accept that apology on behalf of Catholics everywhere… Really, this is hardly newsworthy, and I don’t think Jon intended his remark as a religious attack or anything.
 
Really?Remind me to make fun of Jewish "beanies"or that funny spastic way they pray.Or how Muslims are the original “Head-bangers”-Hyuck.
It was NOT funny.It was a gratuitous joke making fun of THE tenant of our Faith ,the Eucharist.Obviously Yahoo found it egregious enough to censor the insult.

It’s no wonder comedians feel the Catholic Church is a safe target with remarks like these posts.I’ll bet you especially find Leno’s jokes about every priest being a molester hysterical.

No it wasn’t an attack it was simple unthinking gratuitous bigotry disguised as humour.
 
I don’t find the remark funny and I think it was in very poor taste. Whether Jon Stewart is anti-Catholic on the basis of this one comment I don’t know; but if it were directed against an essential belief of Judaism, I’m sure it would have gotten more attention. We need organizations like The Catholic League and the ADL to point out when comedians and others cross the line.

I doubt that Stewart intended to say anything offensive. It was a spur of the moment remark, likely intended to reduce audience tension after accidentally cutting his hand badly enough that it required six stitches.

Considering that, earlier on that same show, Stewart had apologized for not mocking Wiener more aggressively the day before I suspect he will issue an apology for this as well.
 
And his comment came after he was told to stop acting so “jew-ie” as he held his bleeding hand… A joke… Did the Jewish anti defimation league object to this infrence?
 
I sympathize with the posters saying “Its only a bad joke!” but this is precisely the sort of remark that–if directed at Jews–would bring Abe Foxman down from his moral high ground to scold whoever said it. Or–if directed at Muslims–would incite violence and protests.

I do not think this was a rash or belligerent call on Mr. Donahue’s part. Mr. Stewart has a longstanding history of wheeling out the worst Catholic myths to support his comedy, when discussing the Church.

I really don’t think Jon Stewart can be compared with Michael Richards. He pokes fun at his own religion quite often as well. I really don’t sense any hostility in him. If he apologizes, I will be cool with that.

You may be right: I don’t sense hostility in Jon Stewart either. However, poking fun at one’s own religion (or race) is not exactly the same as poking fun at someone else’s. (And even poking fun at one’s own religion can perpetuate stereotypes.) Now, I don’t mean to give the impression I have no sense of humor; I surely do. Still, there are certain things I regard as off-limits, and making fun of the Sacrament of the Eucharist doesn’t seem appropriate or humorous to me. We have enough anti-Catholicism and antisemitism in the world already; we don’t have to inspire more.
 
The other person started the religion joking by telling Stewart not to be so “Jewish” and Stewart simply responded with an off the cuff remark. The comment is about as antiCatholic as the other person’s comment was antiSemetic.

Yes, I believe Mr. Donohue often overreacts. I am no fan of Jon Stewart, but this was just ad lib comedy. It was a joke *based *on Catholic beliefs, not a poke at Catholic beliefs.

The last several years of the CL and Bill focusing on trite harmless stuff like this is why they are more ridiculed now than ever before. Donohue is in need of a very long vacation…he been burnt for about a half a decade now.

I have no idea if Stewart is anti-Catholic but comedians seem to feel they have carte blanche to ridicule the Church and our beliefs.I thank you for your support.
