Jon Stewart's end rally speech drives the point home

It was surprisingly non-partisan. Even Keith Olbermann took a little offense over his twitter feeds. Parts thereof:
This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith. Or people of activism or to look down our noses at the heartland, or passionate argument or to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times. And we can have animus and not be enemies.

Reasonable, right? I wonder how many will discount him right off the bat just because he’s a “lib’rul pothead comedian” …

Often, the court jesters speak the most truthfully…

Having seen his show, I think it was fair of people to assume this would be a partisan affair. That said, if it was truly bipartisan and fair in its tone, I don’t suspect people will discount his comments.
 
I think the reason the rally is thought of as non-partisan is because of the recent appearance by Obama on Jon Leibowitz’s show.

Yes, his name is not Stewart, but Jon Stuart Leibowitz.

Anyway, the seeming non-partisanship of the rally is really just Stewart being a liberal and trying to keep liberals from leaving Obama.

Stewart IS a liberal; he had Obama on his show because they’re as like as two peas in a pod.

The key point is this: he couldn’t make the rally blatantly partisan, and blatantly “Republicans are bad! Obama is good!”, because that would drive people away, just as they are being driven away from Obama by Obama’s terrible policy decisions.

If Stewart went out there and did something like the Ed Schultz One Nation rally, and attacked conservatives and praised Obama, he’d get nowhere, and if anything come off as nothing more than a ideologically-driven pundit.

He had to keep it non-partisan so people would feel more comfortable listening to him. People like to listen to him because they like his comedy and his show and all that, but what’s more, people get tired of MSNBC as the voice of liberalism in America. The rally was to provide an alternative to the partisanship of MSNBC and CNN. It had no overt political message because its purpose was to entertain. But people came because they know Stewart as a liberal. So the rally was partisan, but then it wasn’t. It attracted partisan people to solidify their partisanship… by not being partisan. Confusing, but I reckon that’s about right.

As for Stewart himself, I don’t really think he speaks for any Catholic. I don’t agree with his political views, but I also admit that this rally was an interesting way to keep people on board.

Can I ask what the point of you giving his actual name rather than just using the stage name that everyone knows him by?
 
No one seemed to know what his real name was, and it happened to be something I knew, because I read a bio about him, and he seems to have had a troubled past… his parents were divorced, and he, born into a Jewish family, suffered anti-Semitic bullying. I thought that’s a sad side of him we don’t hear a lot about.

I didn’t want to bring that up because it seemed off-topic, and I didn’t want to get into implications about Stewart’s religion (or lack thereof). Now that I read what I said it seems a little off kilter and I understand your confusion.

But about his rally, I don’t think he’s driving any Catholic point home in particular, as the topic name implies. As I said in the rest of my post, I think he is, at heart, a liberal, and though he and Colbert don’t say it out loud, they are trying to keep people on the side of Obama, who is, for the most part, opposed to the Catholic Church.

Thanks for clarifying because I also thought it a little odd. Now, it does make more sense when people bring up Michael Savage’s real last name - Wiener. He is more of a wiener than a savage IMO. 😛

I know humor when I see it, and I’ll laugh at him and his jokes when they are funny. I’ll be nice to people to a point.

But he and the rest of the liberals in this country have pushed hatred into the laps of conservatives. They have been on television talking **** about everyone they can. If they think I’m going to ignore that and start promoting civility, bipartisanship and all that, they got another thing coming.

I knew what his name was. Most people know he is Jewish. Why would he have a Catholic perspective? I was glad they let Cat Stevens back in the country. I liked his music

He did make a profound point. We are all in this country together and we need to listen to each other and behave in a civilized way. Why does his birth name matter for this message?

First of all, why point out his real Jewish last name? What’s the point there? Almost reminds me of those Barack HUSSEIN Obama stump speeches in 2008…

Secondly, do you think Stewart’s rally was any less “overt” than the insane kookoo bird Glen Beck’s rally? His was supposedly non-partisan but decidely was definitely not a liberal or moderate-friendly environment. So Beck is a righty with no overt expressions at a rally, same with Stewart. What then is the big woop here?🤷

Stewart has gone after Obama harder than most liberals on CNN or MSNBC or heck, even FOX lately. He definitely gave him tough questions and expressed his angst against him the other day.

At least Stewart is good at what he does----political satire. He does lean left, but if you watch his show enough, he blasts both sides pretty hard! Being an independent, I appreciate that! 😃

Agree.

I think being called a racist, bigot, homophobic, bitter clinger and stupid for the last few years has turned me too…on the eve of lib’s losing power… now I am suppose to say… no big deal?
