I’m sorry if this is so long, just trying to get good advice from you great people of God. The summary is: We live on a strict budget, (hubby is a teacher), have two special needs twins, four sons altogether, very stressful daily walk and our vain, materialistic neighbors have gossiped and degraded us for toys in our front yard. They are a self-appointed home owners association of 15 or so home on our street, nothing at all official. Most are retired and quite well-off. We have tolerated their anti-children attitude quite well until they placed a “please clean up your yard and plastic toys off your driveway” note in our mailbox this week.

The long version:
We have lived in this home the past 3 years. We bought it for way under value and have done major repairs and updates internally, furnace, paint, all new landscaping for front yard, updated bathroom etc. Shortly after moving here we were given a huge challenge, our then 3 yr old twins were found to have special needs. I stay at home with our four sons and hubby is a Catholic School teacher. We reacted quickly with our twins and found as much help and resources as we could to try and intervene in their development. We have come so far in the past 3 years but it has been very hard living. Old cars, no vacations very strict budget, used clothes, furniture etc. Our sons have benefited by the archdiocese health care plan, 7 surguries, and all the costs of diagnosing and suppoting therapy to help them grow. It’s a full time exhausting job to parent them well and keep our life from coming unglued. We have grown so deep in our faith and to one another during this struggle because we have found that peace which can only come from knowing and living through Christ. Doing what’s right, living with much sacrifice. The home we purchased is on an upscale street. Our investment here will pay off greatly if we ever sell. We have found in our struggle that vanity and materialism is very popular with our neighbors. New cars, one year four of the neighbors bought their wives hot tubs for the back yard. These folks are in a whole other time in their lives, retired in their fifties, vacations and lots of time on their hands. We realize how our life here is richly blessed with the gifts of our children, our faith and a daily request for our needs to be cared for. You may understand now when I tell you that we have received two notes in our mailbox regarding toys in our front yard and on the driveway. Our backyard kind of dives off into woods and we have a very nice large flat front yard so the boys are usually playing there. We started a project last summer involving retaining walls and some of those blocks are still in our side yard, they weigh about 70 pounds each. Hubby has been working, going to school full time to try to change jobs for a better income. Our twins have trouble with transition. We have felt that with starting Kindergarten in the fall that moving and “cashing in” on our investment would be tough for them and it would be very difficult to buy a home in this neighborhood for our large family to move in to. We already have IEP’s and special educators in place for next school year and our older children are growing roots in our catholic grade school each year, they will be in 2nd and 3rd grade next year.

Oh, I’m really rambling, and under hubby’s name even. I just am so upset. I would love to build storage for the boys toys. There are about 5 little ride on cars, a sand box, a basketball net and during the summer a swimming pool. No trashy toys etc. I would love to update and paint the outside of the house but at what sacrifice? Me going back to work when these boys are going to need me the most? Why is it when you living as we are and know that we have our priorities very squared away that we are under attack? Don’t they know that we would love to only be worried about toys left out in the yard? I know the gossip machine on this street works overtime and I have shared some of our families struggles with some of these folks… Oh, please pray for us. Please pray the we have strenghth and are courageous in the face of all this poop.

Thank you for listening.

JJBlue: I am more concerned that your children are playing in the front yard rather than in the back. They could be kidnapped!!! Have you thought of this? NO, do not even consider going to “WORK”. You work more than any man ever will in his lifetime. This is your God-given vocation, and I’m sure you’re wonderful at it!!! As far as the neighbors, just ignore it. Maybe invite some of the old cronnies over for tea some afternoon. They’re probably secretly missing when they’re kids were little, and have some stories to tell/and/or advice. God Bless You~~

As I tried to post before the server went down again…

…If it were me, I’d wait until garbage day, or go to a garage sale, and get two of the rattiest lawn chairs I could find. Those in need of a good coat of paint, or with the webbing sprung out, would qualify. I’d then sit with Hubby on the front lawn and wave at the neighbors while the children played in the evenings, even say “hi” as they passed, whether or not they did.

But I have a bit of a temper.

You would probably be better served praying for these people and ignoring their nastygram, unless you know of a town ordinance or a deed restriction that prohibits toys from being in the front yard. Maybe in time you’ll be able to afford a toybox or covering, but kids are kids. And no, don’t go to work. Stay home and enjoy those boys. They’ll be grown soon enough.

BTW- Your priorities ARE in line, and you are a witness to a good Catholic lifestyle. Hence, you are under attack by those who don’t understand. It doesn’t make it easier, but that’s why.

These people need to get a life. I can’t believe with all the starvation, suffering, and death in the world, people like your neighbors get bent out of shape about toys in a yard. Funny how they couldn’t even tell you themselves, that says a lot about them.

It’s not your neighbor’s responsibility to monitor your house, your yard, and your kids. I would put a note on their box saying, “Thanks for the suggestion.” and leave it at that. They have no business telling you what to do with your yard. You own it. As long as the grass is cut and there aren’t any hazards, then you’re fine.

Did anyone sign the note? I’d print out what you posted here and stick it right back in their mailboxes–maybe removing reference to the hot tubs and anything else that’s maybe not charitable. And if there were no names on the note, everyone in the neighborhood would get it with the mention that had those who wrote it not been embarrassed, they could’ve signed it and received a direct response.

Oh, and if I did do this (and I probably would), I wouldn’t forget to mention that I’d keep all of them in my prayers.

I would just ignore that unless they keep bothering you. If they confront you again, I would simply say, “Oh, I would love to, any chance you would mind helping out.”

That or a big sign in your front lawn that reads “Bite me.” 😉 Ok, so I’m kidding with that one.

I’m sorry to hear of your situation. I think the other posters all have good adivce. I’ll pray for you and your family.

From the sound of your post, I get the impression you live in a house on a well-to-do street, but you don’t really ‘belong’ to the neighborhood (where would you find the time?!)

It brings to mind my biggest complaint about the people in my town. We have a wonderful parish which offers LOTS of educational and social opportunities for church members to get together after Mass. Our masses are mostly full (all 5 of them) and yet for these opportunities afterward - hardly anyone attends.

As Catholics we believe in the Communion of saints and we are called to be brothers and sisters to everyone around us, and yet even in our own ‘homes’ we don’t reach out to get to know our extended family members.

Same in the neighborhood you live in…apparently they don’t know you, and you don’t know them. Have you ever spoken to anyone in your neighborhood - invited them over? Have they had any opportunity to find out about your situation?

I suspect they are judging you based on external indications only - they are assuming, incorrectly - that you are ‘low-income’ people who are ‘lazy and sloppy’ and don’t ‘belong’ in ‘their’ neighborhood.

If you know who these 10-15 households are, I honestly would suggest you pop a copy of the letter you received in their mailboxes along with a response from you which simply thanks them for their concern and then solicits them for their support and help.

If they knew you were a catholic family with 2 special needs twins, a teacher husband (catholic school, no less), continuing with his own education so he can be a better provider for the family, they should feel quite ashamed for their erroneous assumption and apologize for writing the note they did.

But the point of the response from you is not to make them squirm…the point is to reach out to them as neighbors…educate them about your situation so they can better understand your situation…and appeal to them for their prayers and suggestions for how to better manage that front yard of yours. Once they see your hands are full all day and that you, too, would appreciate a nicer front yard, and are open to ideas, perhaps they will come up with a solution for you and actually help you carry it out.

In your response, I would add that you will of course be keeping them in your prayers, thanking the Lord for surrounding you with such concerned neighbors who are ready and able to respond to the opportunity He has given them to help a neighbor in need.

I suspect the people in your neighborhood are Christian, for the most part, so this approach should be the most effective. One of two things will result: a) they’ll either leave you alone out of embarrassment or b) they’ll come to your assistance. Both options are good for you.

Well, unless your property is under an official deed restriction or HOA, you do NOT have to answer to these people. I don’t care what they “self-appointed” themselves to. (that kind of attitude from people really makes me angry:mad: ).

So forget about the nasty note in your mailbox. Those people have NO RIGHT to tell you what you can or can’t have on your property. Period. Concentrate on taking care of your family, which it sounds like your doing a great job already. 😉

You tell your neighbor’s to mind their own#%^$business and as long as the toys aren’t in their yard there is nothing to concern them. Finally, if they are that offended tell them they can invest in a nice privacy fence.

You people Rock! You sure know how to make a girl feel uplifted…

We have tried to relate to our neighbors at social gatherings, been kind and reached out to what interests them. I prayed for this group at Adoration on Monday. It felt good to hold them in prayer. I asked for wisdom also in understanding this mostly baby-boom generation who both parents worked full time when kiddies were home and they present in general conversation with generally shallow topics like their value as people is equal to the quality of things they have worked hard to purchase. We don’t have the luxury of that self lie. We are raising four sons and trying to live and teach a life guided by our heavenly father.I have found in my short existence that people who have money and those without both groups carry crosses and suffer so I am trying to remember this while praying for this group. In the meantime, we are carrying on as usual, maybe waving more often and smiling as their cars go past our yard, but who can resist a freckle face cutie’s wave?

We did respond to this note though, wish I would have read your posts for more suggestions of how to handle… but hubby’s was quite diplomatic: He decided to quote a general from the battle of Bastogne. The troops were surrounded and the German general sent a letter requesting surrender. The American general wrote back “Nuts”, just that nothing else. We are in a battle here on so many fronts and surrendering is not an option… It doesn’t put our personal info into this streets rumor mill and it kind of ends the dialogue without insulting anyone. It was probably a good opportunity to try and show these people the Christ in our hearts though and now that opportunity has passed. Maybe someone will need something someday and we will be able to minister to them…

Thank you all again for the wonderful words of advice and encouragement. I appreciate you taking the time to help!

May God Bless,

I wish you lived in our neighborhood. Kids are always running from one house to the next. All kids of toys are strewn about (yes, they get picked up at dusk.) Parents are outside, pitching wiffleball (or the kids favorite: kickball, but with a big, fat wiffleball bat), watching the kids catch fireflies. No snooty neighbors getting in a snit over the basketball backboard in the front yard!

I’ll remember you at adoration this weekend!

Cathy,

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

Are there really neighborhoods like yours? aaah sigh

We have thought of moving to another home but there is no assurances of a better situation… wonder if hubby is up for a move to Missouri LOL!

There are also neighborhoods like that in Arkansas. Our neighbors spend the evenings outside - last evening we ended up with 2 other couples, one brought a bottle of wine, sitting on the carport til 10:30 talking.

The big kids (13/16) all went to one house and watched the little kids so that couple (parents of the little kids) could join the grown ups outside.

I just love my neighbors!

I can think of all sorts of reaponses to your neighbors’ action, but most of them are uncharitable. So I will just second the advice to just ignore them, unless, of course, they have the legal force of an actual organized homeowners’ association behind them. Then you might have to do something. But until then, just tell them to hang it on their beaks. Quietly, under your breath 😉

Our neighborhood has kid stuff (and kids) all over, too. There are always kids running around. Maybe it’s a St. Louis metro area thing. 😉 😃

It sounds more like a clique than an actual sanction homeowners’ organization.

I would go through the kids rooms, the playroom and garage, and leave everything out in the yard and driveway.

The same kind of style the Queen of England used to send a message to an animal rights group by wearing a pheasant feather in her cap the day after they criticized her for participating in a pheasant hunt.

Yup - you could also add some lovely pink flamangoes to your yard. Oh and go ahead and put up your Christmas decorations, leave them up all year long…

I wish you lived near us, so you could see the good boomers. First and foremost, the people on our 2-block stretch MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS!!! Second, several of these people are independent professionals (lawyers, doctors) who chose to adopt children and needed to live in a safe neighborhood, but still could afford to adopt. We also have a few elderly (WWII, the Big One) and they, too, don’t seem to be on the verge of status seekers.

already bought 3 or 4 large plastic pink yard flamingos, painted my house matching shades of purple and yellow, and painted the mailbox sky blue. But that’s just me…😃

I figure my house should be the one place my kids can play without worry. They aren’t allowed in the front yard, but it wouldn’t bother me to see a neighbor with toys in the yard. As a matter of fact, I would let them play in the front if it was fenced in like a ladies around the corner.
