"According to “View” co-host Joy Behar, those sainted by the Catholic Church are no more than mentally ill individuals who heard voices. On the January 9 edition of “The View” Behar, who considers prayer a “distraction,” suggested that there are no longer any saints due to modern medicine.

‘I have a theory that you can’t find any saints any more because of psycho-tropic medication. I think that the old days the saints were hearing voices and they didn’t have any thorazine to calm them down. [laughter] Now that we have all of this medication available to us, you can’t find a saint any more.’

Elisabeth Hasselbeck noted the late Mother Teresa, who does not yet been given sainthood, as a modern example. Behar responded by citing Mother Teresa’s doubts and that the Church’s standard has changed due to medical advances"

I am not the least bit shocked by this. I’ve come to expect this from The View. I wonder if she has the courage to say something similar about Islam and Mohammed. I doubt it.

Well, I guess for a normal person, dying to self is not exactly logical… Catholics (and other Christians) and Saints are not Mentally Ill. Illogical, yes, but not insane.

Modern medicine hasn’t gotten rid of mental illness so I guess there are still plenty of saints in the making. I could even be one of them.😃

Bill Donahue will have a field day with this one.

The thing that puzzles me is why so many Catholic topics arise on that show.

I think Behar is a lapsed Catholic, obviously not a well informed Catholic though if she believes that hearing voices makes you a Saint.😦

That’s the rub. Based on her understanding of sanity, this is a compliment, no? She could use our prayers like other anti-Catholics.

Come to think of it, she’s got it all wrong.

Catholic Saints are actually mutants ( like the X-Men )

St. Francis can talk to animals
St. Theresa Avila experiences extasy and talks to angels
St. Catherine of Siena has this wierd power related to the blood of Jesus and she has this imaginary wedding ring…
A bunch of saints have the muntant power to not rot after death.

This all started post Pentecost… the apostles were not only crazy, they had super powers like curing people by walking on their shadows, busting out of prisons un noticed, and teleportation after baptizing eunuchs. (ACTS)

I think the Church fascinates many secularists and leads them to ridicule what makes them feel uncomfortable.

Whoopie Goldberg who attended Catholic schools (not sure if she was actually Catholic or not) brought the whole subject up when she said she could not worship in a church that worships statues. " we are not supposed to worship idols" “I went into the church and there are all these statues”

That is when Behar chimed in with “what about the statues of all the saints?” Then the rant began. These people are pitiful.

Big-mouth, bigoted,…hmmmm, can anyone think of another “b” word to describe them?

Oh dear, I just extended my time in purgatory :gopray:

It’s likely that a very small minority of canonized saints had inner locutions or visions. The majority were just very holy people that lived according to Christ’s Will - if that’s being mentally ill then I wish I was that crazy. Behar’s statement is profoundly cynical and callous but we’ve come to expect that from this show.

A few questions:
  1. Why is this repeatedly anti-Catholic show on the air?
  2. Who lets these ignorance-filled people on the set?
  3. Who actually listens to these womyn? As a 20 year old male, I attempted watching a whole episode of the View. I gave up after about 20 minutes (if that) because of the complete inane-ness and idiocy that was rotting my brain…

Raymond Arroyo addresses this show from time to time.

Behar is an ex-Catholic with an ax to grind. Hasselbeck is an ex-Catholic, I believe. Barbara Walters gives them free reign to say whatever they want. As for Whoopi Goldberg, or any of them, their comments are not worth a minute of anyone’s valuable time.

Turn off this show and forget it exists.

I’m with Bayern-what-ever-his-name-is…I’ve never lasted more than 5 minutes watching that drivel. I must say, however, that the same goes for Ophey Winfrey…5 minutes tops.

My question on this subject is, Why do you care? If you believe that thus and such individual was a Saint…there you go.

Whoever this person is has not one thing to do with truth.

Relax,

John

What puzzles me is why anyone would care what Joyce Behar has to say about anything, much less matters Catholic. I am reminded of George Silver, the 16th century English master-at-arms. When one of his students reported that another teacher was badmouthing him and suggested Silver thrash the fellow, Silver replied that there was nothing to be gained in “casting a stone a every yelping dog.”

When did Bill Donahue become anyone with weight?
He may be a Catholic brother, but, IMO, he is an over-rated…,
I stopped in deference to the forum.
And to stay on topic, can anyone here prove that the Saints were not insane? Of course not…that’s why they call it faith.

Yes, Joy is in need of a lot of prayers and I might add liberal doses of thorazine.
