POPE JOHN PAUL II, a new four-hour mini-series event based on the remarkable life of Pope John Paul II, shot on location in Krakow, Poland and in Italy, will be broadcast Sunday, December 4 at 9PM ET/PT and Wednesday, December 7 at 8PM ET/PT. Historians at the Vatican provided script consultation for the mini-series, and exclusive footage has been filmed on St. Peter’s Square, in the Sistine Chapel and in surrounding areas of the Vatican.
[Cary Elwes](http://www.cbs.com/specials/pope/bios/cary/) portrays Karol Wojtyla in his adult years prior to being elected Pope on Oct. 16, 1978, and Academy Award winner and multiple Golden Globe Award winner [Jon Voight](http://www.cbs.com/specials/pope/bios/jon/) portrays him during his extraordinary 26-year reign that ended with his death on April 2, 2005. Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award nominee [James Cromwell](http://www.cbs.com/specials/pope/bios/james/), Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee [Ben Gazzara](http://www.cbs.com/specials/pope/bios/ben/) and [Christopher Lee](http://www.cbs.com/specials/pope/bios/christopher/) also star in this drama about a man whose papal odyssey encompassed more than 120 countries and earned him the reputation of an international fighter for freedom. It follows Karol Wojtyla's journey from his youth in Poland through his late days on the Chair of St. Peter and explores the 264th Pope's fascinating life behind the scenes: how he managed to touch the hearts of millions of people and change the face of the church and the world; how he defended the dignity of mankind against all kinds of Totalitarianism--from Nazism to Communism to consumerism; and who successfully related to people of all ages.

Has anyone heard about the CBS movie on Pope John Paul II tonight? I missed the ABC version and this one looks tempting but I am not sure if I should watch, especially with finals coming up! If it is good I would love to watch it, but I just am not sure. Anyone know anything about it? Thanks and God Bless!

Yup, it comes on CBS at 9pm Eastern and am really looking forward to this one.

I happened on the ABC version and I sort of liked it, there were some inaccuracies that I won’t go into now, but am hoping that tonight’s will offer more.

I just hope they don’t try to add in some sort of conspiracy or negative twist to put stains on his awesome life and create some publicity. As long as they keep it good, accurate, and really make it clear what an amazing, saintly person he was, then I’ll have no problem with it:)

You beat me to it. I was just going to post this.
I will watch it. I hope they are true to JPII life.

I heard that the CBS version is not as good as the ABC one. It reviews JP’s life adn legacy but does not go in depth about the effect of his legacy. Still I plan to take a look.

I’m watching it now, looks pretty accurate. It has been very good so far.

Yeah baby… Now that’s the JP II that we all know! It makes ABC’s version look like a cable access show." To stay alive and to stay Polish" is the response I have always heard from those who lived through the German occupation. The Polish spirituality comes through accurately in this movie. Can’t wait for Wednesday’s second part.

So far…it’s really good!! Way better than ABC, IMHO.

Can’t wait to see the conclusion on Wednesday. 🙂

This had so much more substance the the ABC version. Wow!

I thought it was pretty good. But Cary Elwes playing young Karol drove me a little nuts. I kept thinking “It’s Westley!” 😑 He also had a silly look on his face half the time…didn’t have the JP look. The actor who played him in the European version did a better job–or at least looked more the part. Not that I dislike Cary Elwes (Princess Bride is one of my all time favorite movies…).

Looking forward to John Voight…but every time I look at him as JP, I keep seeing John Voight. We’ll see if that disappears as I watch it. If it does, it’ll mean the man is a-workin’. 👍

I LOVED it! Now this is John Paul II … I too saw the ABC broadcast and that can’t hold a candle to this one! I can hardly wait till Wednesday!👍

I’m familiar with neither actor. The younger one certainly looked like a young Wojtyla. ANYONE is better than the actor that ABC had. Well, maybe not Billy Crystal…

Not to put a damper on this thread or anything, but did anyone else catch the backwards sign of the cross?

I think that it was superbly done!

I particularly like the way it depicts the faith as heroic appealing and young/countercultural rather than stodgy and dogma ridden which is the way secularists relentlessly try to portray it. Like the way they keep showing the Rosary!-and the light in which it’s shown. Being in my early 40’s I can see this having great appeal for 20, 30 and 40 somethings. Hope a lot of young priests watched it!

Have a feeling that the second part is going to be very powerful. If it is (never thought I’d say this), I’m going to write CBS a letter of appreciation. If enough people do, maybe it will encourage them to do more of the same…who knows?!

I,too, enjoyed the first part of the series. But I was thrown when they renamed his friends. It took me a little time to realize that “Roman” was his friend, Jurek, and they changed his girlfriend’s name also. Perhaps they are still alive, or they just wanted to preserve some privacy for them and their families.

I had the same thought, too, watching the movie tonight! Cary Elwes is a wonderful actor - I really had to try hard to get past the “Princess Bride” character! But I found his portrayal very effective!

On another note, I thought John Voight had a more striking resembelence to our Holy Father JPII than any previous actor who protrayed him! Got my DVR set for Wednesday!
