So, I’ve recently made the decision to return to Catholicism after 15 years of being away. I’ve spent the last 11 years in a non-denominational church. My decision to return to Catholicism has been met with such hateful judgement that literally has left me feeling sick.
I can’t believe a church would be so adamantly hateful towards brothers and sisters inChrist.
Has anyone else encountered such opposition?
I feel such peace since I decided to return but am so sick of the people who are against me.

I’ve encountered disrespect, belittling, and discounting of my beliefs entirely by nice guys to pugnacious bullies from the JW’s, SDA’s and LDS’s who have knocked on my door. JW’s told me I had to listen to them because of their "right to practice their religion, LDS missionaries said I must hate my kids because I said no thanks and SDA’s just had a nasty spiel that made no sense. But they pale in comparison to the treatment I’ve received from “non-denom” members on the street. These are the people that left me, a high school jr, hiding in my car on my lunch break in 90+ degree weather with the windows rolled up and the doors locked. They are also the ones that made my dad go to the police to get them to stop harassing me at work because one of their “evangelists” grabbed my arm and pinned me against a wall to tell me I was “lost” and in need. So yes I’ve encountered just what you are talking about.

Unfortunately your non-denominational church is full on sinners, many whom struggle with amenity and would rather experience blind anger than try to understand. This is not unique to your old church, but their are people like this in every group (as all people are sinners).

What you need to do is stick to the path that you feel God is leading you down, and don’t let humans come between you and God. Admittedly this is much easier said than done…

Not sure where you are posting from but in the south (USA) there is anti Catholicism. It is pride or ignorance that motivates protestants so try not to take it personally. Remember you have Truth on your side so do your best to proclaim that Truth as best you can.

Welcome home! Dive into your faith and you will never once be tempted to leave again. I made the conscious decision to defend the faith onYouTube. I am now “officially” going to hell, demon-possessed, pagan, and even worse: I follow “Man-made traditions.” The non-denominational groups are the most judgmental and hate-filled. You do not see this from mainline denominations.

We know who our true brothers and sisters are, when they maintain their professed love of us, no matter our choice.

You will find judgemental ‘Christians’ everywhere, not just in non-denoms. Unfortunately, I have found them in the Catholic/Orthodox world, too.

I am sorry for the ex-Protestant Catholics who have to suffer at the hands of their Protestant brethren when they converted to Catholicism. I guess they are more vocal than us Catholics when it comes to religion. There is good and bad of it, of course. The good part is probably they are braver and bolder in evangelizing while the downside would probably that they can be presumptuous thinking that Catholics are faithless and do not know their Bible.

What to you think it is like for an Italian America , living in an Italian neighborhood, with grandparents still alive, and with relatives in the Priesthood, to leave the Catholic faith?

I’m from the Midwest and live in what I would call a very “Catholic” town, but it’s ridiculous how anti-Catholic this church is. I’m not looking for their support or approval, however I was not expecting them to be so judgmental and hateful.

I really couldn’t say, as you didn’t indicate what the hateful judgment consisted of.

Most regular protestants or others wouldn’t be happy about someone leaving, but very few would seek to destroy a person’s reputation, disparage their reputations in public or key their cars for leaving.

I’m sorry you’ve had to endure this. Pray for them. Most likely many of them have been fed hateful lies and anti-Catholic propaganda since they were children that go well beyond the normal ecclesial and theological disputes.

I made the mistake of attending a Pentacostal service with a friend once. I was introduced to the pastor and assistant pastor. They wanted to “save” me. Periodically they’ve seen me at the Walmart and try to preach to me about how there are a lot of churches but not all lead to heaven especially mine. During one of these encounters I prayed to God to get me out of it and one of my A.C.T.S. brothers walked around the corner and saw me. He gave me a big hug and I introduced him and the pastors tune changed that time!

I respectfully disagree. My husband and his family are non-denoms and they are very kind and loving and acceptant of my faith. They don’t want to become catholic, but they don’t put me down for it.

Now the Baptists (in my experience) are a whole nother issue.

Many don’t consider catholics “brothers and sisters in Christ” In my personal experience, i’ve always been told i’m not christian, i’m catholic. From a wide range of protestants and other types.

The devil hates all aspects of God. He loves the division and hates when people go back to God. So of course you would get that kind of thing leaking through. It’s unfortunate that so many people have unknowingly (or perhaps knowingly) become tools of the devil, but that is the world as Christ said it would be. Protestantism created cracks in which the devil was able to leak through and sew division and hate and that is why there is so much hatred for Catholics. You will be persecuted because of Christ, but have no fear because Christ has conquered it all. Welcome back! You got the same reaction I did before I came back.

by the way, i would bet my salary that if you had told your group that you were leaving to go to some other non-denominational thing, they would’ve been sad but happy and encouraging.

I’m from the Mid West and live in what I would call a predominantly Catholic town. I’ve spent a lot of time going to mass this week and praying. I’ve decided that I’m going to have to give up the Protestant friends who don’t want to accept my faith.

Idk about that. With all respect and I do know your posts so I dont mean you in this matter. But I again feel in this forum Protestants are numerous times accused of being heretics and rejecting the one true faith and even one quoted to me a Church father saying we are not going to heaven (maybe not his words, but he quoted it none the less). So honestly my whole family in law are Catholic and I never got that idea from them. I prefer not to believe this is the case but posters in this forum makes it hard for me. Just a thought, maybe real world is different but on this forum there are more subjective Protestant bashing then anything else (yea we see it). But then again it’s a Catholic forum
