Just managed to get my hyperactive brain to watch a EF Mass online and

AGHHHHHHH IT’S SO AWESOME! When I see a run-of-the-mill OF mass it never gives me such a jolt of grace as that! I was like, oh the readings flow so well, the prayers are beautiful, such reverence, I can really feel the piety and sense that this IS the sacrifice of Calvary, I’m learning things from these words, so powerful, by time communion came around in the video I feel such a sense of adoration toward the Eucharist that I just want to jump through the screen and take it! Nuns in habits! Chapel veils! I love it, although I felt a bit of vertigo as I tried to keep up in my missal, I loved the silence and could totally see myself benefiting supremely from joining myself to the priest’s prayers and contemplating. I never got this… awe… out of my local mass. It makes me sad that we cut so much down, and also the fact that now I want to attend one every Sunday and sign myself up as a traditionalist (really, the love of the EF was all that was missing to make me one) but I can’t get there due to car troubles. I just really felt like I was worshiping, there’s just something that feels so arbitrary about the way the OF is done… read these, recite that, take communion, get blessed, go eat, go home… blah.

Honestly, I think I just found what will fill this gnawing hole that I’ve had in my heart. I’ve needed a place to call home, or at least something BIIIIIIGGER than myself to identify with… I think I found it. WHEE!

Welcome to the Ancient Mass.🙂

But you know the routine. You’re not supposed to pit one against the other. I am happy that you’re happy. 👍

Which mass did you watch?

A jolt of grace? There is something theologically wrong with the idea that one form gives more grace than other form over two very valid forms.

I can well understand one form touching a particular soul more so than another. Im the same way. But Im not sure it’s accurate to call it grace.

Missa Cantata - Mediatrix of All Graces 2010.html

And yeah, I know I’m technically not supposed to do that, but it’s so impossible to find a traditionally done OF Mass these days, and I really needed to see all the pomp. It helps me feel a sense of self-transcendence.

Call it uncouth, but I do honestly feel that I am much better disposed for Communion by the EF. I’ll be fair and say that I’ve never seen an olde-style OF though, so yeah.

EDIT: I have seen one video of a traditional-style OF done by the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius… but it was just so funkily done that I couldn’t follow. They Baroque’d it and over edited everything and it was just like… meh. They say that the strength of the OF is supposed to be its austerity and noble simplicity. Something about a classical compositions just doesn’t fit that description. I can definitely see the OF being very beautiful in it’s simplicity, and I would be all over a traditionally done one, but they’re so RARE. Ugh.

That definitely makes more sense over the idea of a “jolt of grace” 🙂

I find that I am better disposed over a well celebrated OF than the EF. My mind wanders more during the EF, but in a well prayed OF, I can stay very focused and present. 👍

I think you are right with it being which one a person is “better disposed for.” 👍

I live ten minutes (driving through the city) from their mother house in Chicago, and was completely blown away by their Ordinary Form done in the traditional Latin. I walked into the Church, and was already moved to tears just by simply the altar, chorus singing, and the incense, and this was BEFORE Liturgy even started yet! By the Kyrie, I was completely bawling. Needless to say, these men have got it going on!

Im going to assume that you know that the link title isn’t referring to the Missa Cantata being the Mediatrix of all Graces, but that, on the title page, it was referring to Our Lady, since it was a feast day of Her’s . 👍

She is the one referred to as “Mediatrix of All Graces” 🙂
Really? It’s not like I didn’t notice all the mentions of Mary in the missal!

😛

No, actually there isn’t. Not only that, but one OF Mass can provide more graces than another OF Mass, one EF Mass can provide more graces than another EF Mass, etc. There are many ways in which the graces provided can be affected: disposition of the attendee, disposition of the celebrant, ars celebrandi, etc.

I think the OP is confusing strong emotion with a “Jolt of grace”, as many of my Evangelical friends do. Christ’s is present and his grace is freely available in unlimited quantities for anyone who wishes to avail themselves of it in both the EF and the OF.

Nuns in habits go to many OF masses, and even have OF Masses at their convents. Four fully habited Dominican Siters of St. Cecelia go to the OF Mass at my parish 7 days a week.

True dat. And I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have a blessed missal! Grace, it’s everywhere! Zoom, phew, pat pat.

welcome to the club 😃 lol 🙂

Actually… I dont know but it’s possible that two forms could be valid, but one form more beneficial. For example, take holy water… it’s holy water according to either rite, but the old rite contains an exorcism. It’s like all those little things add up.

I dont know that what you think is a spiritual truth, however?

Is one being more beneficial than the other, a truth of the Church? I have no idea if such a thing is taught as a truth, or if it’s more about people’s opinions based on their own preferences.

Abp Sheen once said that truth is truth even if no one believes it, and error is error even if everyone one believes it.

Not sure if the idea that one form of the Mass being more beneficial or having more grace associated with it is an error or a truth.

Help! What does EF and OF mean? I keep seeing these terms and recognize them as acronyms, but of what? Please someone explain.

EF = Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite aka Tridentine Mass

OF = Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite aka Pauline Mass

EF= extraordinary form (of the Mass…also known as the Latin Mass or the Trinidine Mass)

OF= ordinary form (of the Mass …also known as Novus Ordo )

It’s important to point out that when one reads the word “extraordinary” it shouldnt be read with the idea that it means extra special. It should be read in its true form of extra-ordinary meaning not the ordinary form.

Sort of how extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not “special” ministers. They simply not ordinary ministers. The ordinary minister is the priest.

The Novus Ordo is the Ordinary Form of the Mass, where as the EF is the extra Ordinary form of the Mass

Sometimes in English we miss the meaning of what a word means to the Church.

I’d like to visit St. John Cantius sometime (I live about a four-hour drive from downtown Chicago). I once attended a Latin OF Mass in Munich (at the “Theatinerkirche”) and it was wonderful.

Someday, I’d like to go to that church in Chicago also…
