Just *why* is marijuana use wrong?

The notion of weed being a “gateway drug” is also disputed. The thread shouldn’t assume cause and effect because the phrase has been thrown around. The issue is more complex.
Making marijuana illegal, if anything, turns it into a gateway drug. Marijuana is natural, seemingly harmless, and common. But, once you use it, you’re using illegal drugs and the legal barrier no longer stands in the way harder drugs.

It IS illegal. And it wasn’t a gateway drug.

You answered you own question, thats why its wrong. Its illegal. Why its illegal, I haven’t a clue what the legal thinking is behind that.

Trust me!:confused::confused:

If the intake of cannabis is not through smoke then your point is false. If the intake of cannabis is trough smoke then we are in the same field of tobacco preparation and it has nothing to do with cannabis.

If it is only about the taste then you could deactivate the active ingredient and not hear any complaints, right? I doubt that pot smoker would accept the elimination of the buzz. It is not about taste.
If it was just about the taste to wine connoisseurs then why aren’t they drinking welch’s?

Do you drink? Alcohol is a gateway drug. Just go to any AA meeting and see for yourself.

Hmm… do you eat? Try OA to see how destructive eating can be.

Don’t dodge the question though. Ever had a wee nip?
It not a dodge. It is against forum rules to post off topic comments.

Catechism of the Catholic Church said:
II. GOOD ACTS AND EVIL ACTS
1755
A morally good act requires the goodness of the object, of the end, and of the circumstances together. An evil end corrupts the action, even if the object is good in itself (such as praying and fasting “in order to be seen by men”).
The object of the choice can by itself vitiate an act in its entirety. There are some concrete acts - such as fornication - that it is always wrong to choose, because choosing them entails a disorder of the will, that is, a moral evil. 1756 It is therefore an error to judge the morality of human acts by considering only the intention that inspires them or the circumstances (environment, social pressure, duress or emergency, etc.) which supply their context. There are acts which, in and of themselves, independently of circumstances and intentions, are always gravely illicit by reason of their object; such as blasphemy and perjury, murder and adultery. One may not do evil so that good may result from it.

Since most uses of marijuana are illegal, its use is objectively evil (not good). No intention, nor desired outcome can change this fact. Illegal marijuana use is immoral.

My friend. There is no way to drink any amount of alchohol without experiencing some level of impairment. It takes 30 seconds for a drink of alchohol to go from lips to brain. Even one ounce of alchohol impairs judgment, reaction time and reduces inhibitions. You may feel that you are not impaired, but you are confusing your lack of ability to detect your own impairment with a lack of impairment. I am not condoning marijuana use by any means, but your assertion comes up regularly in these discussions, about the relative wrong-ness of using marijuana, which also seems to appear periodically on this forum. I think it’s dangerous, with all due respect, to suggest that there is an amount of alchohol use that is “safe”. And yes, one ounce of straight alchohol is the same as one 12 oz. beer as one 8 oz. glass of wine. While body weight and fat content may affect your blood alchohol level, it doesn’t mean that your brain is not impaired. It’s just that blood alchohol levels are realtively easy to test for while impairment is far more difficult to test for by law enforcement. Please be careful whenever using any intoxicant.
Ok so I sip on a mixed drink which by standard is 1 oz and that over the corres of 30 to 45 mins in converstions or what ever just really how (name removed by moderator)aired am I? as at that rate the B/A leavals are not even going to be measurable. I am not condoneing impared driving or any such thing just pointing out that you can say that the moment you take a drink of alchohol you have become impaired. This is not true with the use of drugs such as marijuana that from the first draw it is effecting you and is in your system for upwards of 2 weeks.

Again, just something to remember when people are talking about the AA thing- go into a NA meeting (Narcotics anonymous) ask them how many people smoked pot in 6th/7th/8th grade. Then, when pot didn’t do anything, ask them if they dropped acid or popped pills. Since pills and acid are boring after awhile, and since cocaine is so widely available-and what the heck-you survived smoking pot with no effects-try cocaine. Before you know it, cocaine and heroin are also “no big deal” and your doing terrible things looking for stronger highs.

If it even needs to be said, I know that not everyone who smokes pot “graduates” to harder drugs. It’s called a slippery slope for a reason though. Pot may very well be harmless for some people. But that doesn’t mean a society should approve of it/legalize it.

That’s just an argument for why some people shouldn’t touch pot or alcohol. Alcohol is legal, driving intoxicated is not. The slippery slope works against you too. Because someone can’t handle a shot and eventually becomes a roaring drunk isn’t an argument against criminalizing booze.

Not really. More people smoke pot and slide down the slope than drink a few and do the same.

We do have greatly differing points of view on the role of government in saving us from ourselves.

No we don’t. I stated in a previous post that I’m agnostic on legalization. In fact, I am extremely conservative and think the less goverment the better, so we probably agree on the goverment issue, disagree on the morality of smoking pot.

OK, you’re right on that.

If you expect to scare a kid of drugs by pointing out that ANYTHING causes chemical changes throughout the body, that’s a guaranteed fail, The kid, right around the time he’s no longer afraid to drink water, takes a hit off a reefer and when he notices that he doesn’t start looking for the heroin needle is going to think lectures about use of narcotics that really can destroy a person are either overstated hysteria or outright lies.

If I have a scotch I want and expect there to be changes in brain chemistry. That’s the point of having one.
That doesn’t make any sense what so ever.

If you take an Aspirin for a head ache, does it go away? Why? or Why not? Depends on the type of headache, how long you’ve had it. Did you take it at the start or hours into the headach.

If you take an entire bottle of Aspirin at once can you have a problem? Sure, your blood thins out. If you happen to cut yourself badly enough at the same time you might bleed to death. If you take aspirin ALL the time, say one at a time, you might not notice the hole you are creating in your stomach until you happen to eat a spicy taco one day.

If you’re having a heart attack, an aspirin, ONE aspirin, chewed up might slow the process down enough to save your life.

You’ve made assumptions about the lecture. And you assume it to be spoken in a way that doesn’t actually show chemical break down. So, I’ll say yeah, if you try to go all gloom and doom without any back up, you sound like an uneducated idiot. If however, you can show by way of examples, kids are pretty smart, they get it. And well, the stoners… they just justify their actions… Sure it kills brain cells… But just the weak ones… Who needs those???

Regardless, once you start teaching what chemicals do to the body on a cellular structure you able to show what WILL happen, and what COULD happen… but it depends on your exact DNA.

No one knows for sure they will be an alcoholic. They might have a good idea if their whole family preceeding them is in AA. You don’t know if you shoot up if it will kill you the first time, or if you’ll be hookin’ on the street for your next fix for the next 10 years. Some drugs are known for being addictive the first time. Others not so much, but perhaps fun enough, or relaxing enough to desire the effects again and again. But easier to say good bye to if you don’t have any cash in your pocket.

And if you don’t know that if you drink too much water in one sitting that you can throw your electrolites off balance and it will KILL you… or that if you give a baby so much as a 1/2 cup of WATER it will do the same thing… RESULTING in death… Then you should! And now you do.

It’s why when GIs walked into concentration camps in Germany for the first time and sadly handed over food, and when starving prisoners began to eat FOOD they died on the spot (imagine surviving all that… and you die from EATING), because their bodies could no longer take it. It’s all Chemistry!

It’s not to scare kids by telling them made up stories without any proof or evidence…It’s to explain to them the reality of their body.

You’d probably hate her sex talk too… and how it takes just ONE sperm, and ONE time having sex to make a baby… It’s FREAKY SCARY there are teenagers getting ready to graduate high school that don’t KNOW THIS!!! The state of the US Education system is dangerous.

Oh, I’d personally add… Pot STINKS!!! And yes, if you hang out in an out house long enough you won’t notice the smell… But I don’t want to hang out there… DO YOU???

Your final statement about scotch… Blech. I guess you’d have to want that change. Even the good stuff is gross. And here I am wishing they made a good non alcho. Cab. That I could just sip on all day… 'Cause I can’t STAND the buzz and any loss of body control. But I love a great cab… 99pts please! Ok, I’ll settle for 97… well, maybe a little lower. DO NOT show up with anything in a box! LOL!

OP, I think there are lots of ways to approach teens about drugs. I think it’s important to know your target audiance. Some will be swayed by education. Those looking to “look cool”, need to learn why it’s not cool. etc. Some need to realize that if they fall into drugs they will NEVER get out of the hole they already live in. They will have to be the ones to care for themselves where perhaps their parents didn’t or couldn’t.

Maybe it is just me i never took harder drugs because pot no longer did the “trick”.
The reason i tired other drugs was the claim that they allowed one to party harder and longer,

Let’s take magic mushrooms for example it is not illegal to take a stroll find some and munch em down, but pick em, take them to a different location then you are in trouble.
Magic mushrooms are way more dangerous than pot.

…If I have a scotch I want and expect there to be changes in brain chemistry. That’s the point of having one.
I love good scotch and I wish that the alcohol would not affect my brain. This way I could drink as much as I please, and the same it is with wine. I would be drinking a bottle of Amarone every day for lunch instead of this stupid soda if it were not for the alcohol.

(I guess you didn’t catch my post on the other page) That’s okay this thread has sped up a bit.
And many people who have smoked pot have never touched hard drugs, however most people who have touched hard drugs have tried alcohol before pot. 😊
Go back into the NA and ask them how many of them which did they try first. Alcohol or pot? People need to stop confusing statistics. Most people who have tried hard drugs do alcohol first then pot, then climb the latter. However the for the majority pot and alcohol are terminus.

I would also add that “Most people who have tried hard drugs do milk first, alcohol second and then pot, then climb the latter”. I have statistics to prove that. 😉

So are you just having fun or do really want to contribute something logical?
