If you expect to scare a kid of drugs by pointing out that ANYTHING causes chemical changes throughout the body, that’s a guaranteed fail, The kid, right around the time he’s no longer afraid to drink water, takes a hit off a reefer and when he notices that he doesn’t start looking for the heroin needle is going to think lectures about use of narcotics that really can destroy a person are either overstated hysteria or outright lies.
If I have a scotch I want and expect there to be changes in brain chemistry. That’s the point of having one.
That doesn’t make any sense what so ever.
If you take an Aspirin for a head ache, does it go away? Why? or Why not? Depends on the type of headache, how long you’ve had it. Did you take it at the start or hours into the headach.
If you take an entire bottle of Aspirin at once can you have a problem? Sure, your blood thins out. If you happen to cut yourself badly enough at the same time you might bleed to death. If you take aspirin ALL the time, say one at a time, you might not notice the hole you are creating in your stomach until you happen to eat a spicy taco one day.
If you’re having a heart attack, an aspirin, ONE aspirin, chewed up might slow the process down enough to save your life.
You’ve made assumptions about the lecture. And you assume it to be spoken in a way that doesn’t actually show chemical break down. So, I’ll say yeah, if you try to go all gloom and doom without any back up, you sound like an uneducated idiot. If however, you can show by way of examples, kids are pretty smart, they get it. And well, the stoners… they just justify their actions… Sure it kills brain cells… But just the weak ones… Who needs those???
Regardless, once you start teaching what chemicals do to the body on a cellular structure you able to show what WILL happen, and what COULD happen… but it depends on your exact DNA.
No one knows for sure they will be an alcoholic. They might have a good idea if their whole family preceeding them is in AA. You don’t know if you shoot up if it will kill you the first time, or if you’ll be hookin’ on the street for your next fix for the next 10 years. Some drugs are known for being addictive the first time. Others not so much, but perhaps fun enough, or relaxing enough to desire the effects again and again. But easier to say good bye to if you don’t have any cash in your pocket.
And if you don’t know that if you drink too much water in one sitting that you can throw your electrolites off balance and it will KILL you… or that if you give a baby so much as a 1/2 cup of WATER it will do the same thing… RESULTING in death… Then you should! And now you do.
It’s why when GIs walked into concentration camps in Germany for the first time and sadly handed over food, and when starving prisoners began to eat FOOD they died on the spot (imagine surviving all that… and you die from EATING), because their bodies could no longer take it. It’s all Chemistry!
It’s not to scare kids by telling them made up stories without any proof or evidence…It’s to explain to them the reality of their body.
You’d probably hate her sex talk too… and how it takes just ONE sperm, and ONE time having sex to make a baby… It’s FREAKY SCARY there are teenagers getting ready to graduate high school that don’t KNOW THIS!!! The state of the US Education system is dangerous.
Oh, I’d personally add… Pot STINKS!!! And yes, if you hang out in an out house long enough you won’t notice the smell… But I don’t want to hang out there… DO YOU???
Your final statement about scotch… Blech. I guess you’d have to want that change. Even the good stuff is gross. And here I am wishing they made a good non alcho. Cab. That I could just sip on all day… 'Cause I can’t STAND the buzz and any loss of body control. But I love a great cab… 99pts please! Ok, I’ll settle for 97… well, maybe a little lower. DO NOT show up with anything in a box! LOL!
OP, I think there are lots of ways to approach teens about drugs. I think it’s important to know your target audiance. Some will be swayed by education. Those looking to “look cool”, need to learn why it’s not cool. etc. Some need to realize that if they fall into drugs they will NEVER get out of the hole they already live in. They will have to be the ones to care for themselves where perhaps their parents didn’t or couldn’t.
