I take it they gave the proceeds of their record sales away?

Money is the root of much evil but I tend to think it is not evil to own lots of money, it is just extremely difficult once one has it, to appropriate it in a responsible (meaning ‘good’) way. I would hazard a guess and say that many egos have grown proportionately with dramatic increases in personal wealth.

The song is from the great depression and talks about the suffering and needs of coal miners who had lost their jobs. The verse about the Farmers-Labor Party was probably added by another group after the original song was written.
