Five years after revealing that she had started to study Scientology, Katie Holmes has officially returned to the Catholic faith, registering as a parishioner at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York City.
The church, located on 16th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, is known for inclusive thinking and its welcoming of many gay and lesbian Catholics. Its mission statement indicates that the Roman Catholic Church parish “strives to be a prophetic, welcoming community, inclusive witness to the presence of Christ Jesus in our midst.” Its website proclaims that it is a respectful community, “where seekers and their questions are welcomed, where injustice is challenged, where the poor, the alienated and marginalized find a home, and where people are refreshed, reconciled and renewed.”
The New York parish is no stranger to celebrity faces: Nancy Pelosi was seen worshipping there while serving as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

At least she’s out of the frying pan. Let’s hope she hasn’t jumped into the fire but will seek a more orthodox parish in which to worship and bring up her children.

Sounds like an affirming parish. Many in my area are too. Not a good choice. But again some bishops allow these parishes to continue and frankly they thrive as their progressive stance on moral issues and such is appealing to Americans today.

I say- praise God! at least she’s turned away from that other ‘church’…one step at a time is good enough!!!

Well, that’s good. She can sign her kid up for school and everything, and I’m sure that New York City parishes have a lot of experience dealing with weird situations. (It’s a big city, so they see a lot of everything. Saints, even.)

The Good Shepherd knows all His sheep by name, and His sheep know the sound of His voice.

Wow, that’s really exciting. She didn’t waste any time did she.

Even if it’s a more “progressive” or whatever parish, well, beats the heck out of what she was doing before.

It’ll be very confusing for her little daughter though - how do you explain the transition? “You remember that Church we used to attend with daddy, well it’s a load of rubbish, now we’re going back to the real Church…” Confusing for a kid, no?

Anyway, if the report is accurate, God bless her for taking a step in the right direction, and the fact that she has registered with them suggests she will attend and practice her faith. Sometimes being away from our Church for a while makes us better Catholics when we come back, it did for me anyway.

Nicole Kidman didn’t waste any time either returning to the Faith after her divorce from Cruise.

“The church…is known for … its welcoming of many gay and lesbian Catholics.”

Isn’t every parish supposed to be welcoming of gay and lesbian Catholics? And straight Catholics, and tall Catholics, and short Catholics, and black Catholics, and white Catholics…

Of course. The problem is that, at least in my experience, most parishes that say something to the effect of “we welcome gay and lesbian Catholics” really mean “we welcome the practicing homosexual lifestyle, and affirm that there is nothing wrong with it.”

Tom Cruise as a practicing catholic would be a miracle. Me, as a praticing scientologist would be a sin. Katie Holmes returning home is beautiful.

Yes yes yes yes yes! I’m actually all of those things you mentioned so I’m glad I feel included XD …

You’re correct, at least when it comes to this particular church. I quote from the St Francis Xavier church website on the ‘Gay Catholics’ page (under Parish Activities): “Men meet monthly on the first and third Fridays in a welcoming, affirming environment to address gay Catholic life and how best to live authentically our commitment to the Gospel.”

Everything there sounded theoretically okay except the bolded word.
There’s also a Catholic Lesbians page.

Nancy Pelosi  I think they need more sermons on the pro life views of the Church

Welcome Home Katie Holmes!

Your testimony could possibly be one of the most powerful witness to Christ in returning to the Church that He established: The Catholic Church.

I hope when you start doing all those interviews in magazines and on tv, the Holy Spirit gives you the gift of courage and wisdom to speak out and let His voice be heard through you! AMEN.

That would be great if they were affirming them as human beings and discussing how to overcome the challenges of living a chaste, celebate lifestyle in a world that is extremely discouraging and demeaning toward gay Catholics who are faithful to the teachings of the church. But that’s probably not what it is.
