It may be that Ford was deceptive in her testimony, as some body-language experts claim. Most of the psychological community, however, put more stock into what they know about memory than body language. According to extensive memory research, most people are mistakenly convinced they can recall personal events in great detail, whereas the fact of the matter is their recall is often inaccurate in this respect over time. Based on this evidence, I would say it is more likely (although not certain) that, rather than intentional deception, Ford is simply mistaken regarding Kavanaugh’s sexual misconduct. Of course it may also be the case that she is politically driven and lying about his behavior. The ironic part of all this, to me, is that she is herself a psychologist, and therefore should be aware of the pitfalls involved in memory recall. If I were on the Senate committee, I would certainly ask her about her knowledge of the memory process as it relates to detailed information. In other words, what I am suggesting is that there need not be a villain–neither Ford nor Kavanaugh–in this unfortunate, partisan-driven situation.
