Please show me some specific text, so I know what you are talking about.🙂
From the Catholic Catechism
2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons.

I checked Jones “Moral Theology”, which was the standard Moral Theology text worldwide for close to 80 years.

The single reference on hunting was in the section on the priesthood, specifically on priests bearing arms.
“Clerics may carry arms only in necessity. Ordinary hunting is not prohibited, unless is it is of such a frequency that scandal ensues.”
“Moral Theology” #406 Fr. Herbert Jones, OFM Cap, JCD, STL 8th Edition c 1961.

So, at the very least, priests can hunt, as long as they don’t do it too often 🙂

And there is also Pope John Paul II. He was an avid outdoorsman who regularly fished on his hikes.

It is not needlessly, we get food, enjoyment, population control etc. Same as with regular meat, an animal must die.

I think it is the enjoyment and population control that people here are having a rough time with.

Apparently the belief is in place that it is not a choice anymore, it should only be a life and death necessity.

Of course, how exactly is this squared with God demanding animal sacrifice in the OT? Certainly it cannot be argued that there was necessity there? Nor can food be argued for.

I find the “enjoyment” aspect thin, but I don’t disagree with the first one. Again, I think all Catholics need to keep this teaching in mind when hunting, if one chooses to hunt. One should temper one’s enthusiasm and adrenal and try to attempt clean kills.

Think of the enjoyment is an added benefit to getting meat. All good hunters try for the cleanest kill possible.:o

Just from what I have read here, it would seem a messy kill would lead to problems with the flavor from adreneline and various other chemicals an animal in distress will release into their blood.

Yes, you are absolutely right:thumbsup:

Exactly, and anything other than a good, clean kill shot means
  1. The meat takes on an extra ‘gamy’ taste
  2. Some of the meat is ruined, or good only for hamburger
  3. You have to track the animal which is undue suffering on both parties 😉

I think you are in the wrong thread. The topic is hunting for “sport,” for the game of it. Enjoyment and thrill being the motivation, killing an animal for ego, not for food.

Perhaps it’s relative to the discussion? 🤷 Threads on the CAF wander all the time. :whacky:

Whatever your reasons are for hunting, you still have to use the meat.

This is why I have a hard time understanding hunters. The idea of a thrilling kill is foreign to me. I am often in a situation where I have to do something that may hurt someone. One could argue that there is nothing wrong with enjoying what I do. However, the day I enjoy hurting someone is the day I have to find a new job.
