Kneeling for Communion at OF Mass....

I am on a mini break, and went to an OF Mass at an older church this evening. The priest that celebrated Mass had people go to the rail for Communion with one of his altar servers assisting him like at EF Masses. Most everyone received on the tongue and kneeling at the rail, including myself even though it was my first time doing that at an OF Mass but I am used to doing so at EF Masses. I would have no issue if this became the norm at OF Mass.

Has any one gone to an OF Mass and received kneeling/on the tongue at the rail (or similar setup)?

Not around here. The area I live in is ‘relatively’ new area, so the churches by me are only 30-40 years old or less. No altar rails.

The Cathedral in Vancouver has altar rails. And people are free to line-up in the middle to receive standing, or go to the altar rails and receive kneeling. There are several priests who would distribute for standing and kneeling.

That is the normal way at our OF parish. In addition, the Eucharist is offered intincted by the priest.

Not recently. However, for over a decade after the introduction of the OF, that was the norm at the parish where I grew up. Standing and receiving “in line” came much later than the new Missal.

Never knelt before, but I wish. I mean if Lutherans, Methodists, Anglicans, and Episcopalians do it. I believe we should ecspecially be doing it given our belief of the Eucharist as the actual Body, Blood, Soul, And divinity of Jesus Christ. And stop treating it like candy. “That guy up there is handing out cookies”- My nephew.

If I eventually God willing enter seminary next year, and become a pastor in later years, my first act would be installing altar rails, even if it was just a simple wooden and metal rail with kneeling pads. And the altar rail would be the norm in the parish I would have, given the approval from the bishop

At our local OF parish, which I will attend in the morning there are about 20% of the folks that kneel & recieve on the tongue out of about 150 - 175 that attend every Sunday. Its a small rural parish, The Altar rail is a portable one that one of our guys built but its not used for the OF. Every third Sunday we have an EF Mass in the afternoon.

When the OF is celebrated us trads kneel on the floor. No one seems upset by it.

Father has the children receiving their First Holy Communion on the tongue and kneeling. About half or maybe more of our parishioners receive on the tongue. The sign of reverence given most often is a bow. A few kneel on the floor.

If all goes as planned, I plan to do this as well. Also ask if it may be via intinction. I think its important that the kids receive this way the first time.

Our diocesan handbook for priests simply states that the faithful may receive Holy Communion “on the tongue or in the hand, standing or kneeling.” Many parishes have begun placing kneelers in front of the altar so those who choose to kneel may do so comfortably.

I’ve seen this @ our Archdiocesan Shrine of Bl. Pedro Calungsod, but with those portable kneelers.
I think that this should be the norm as it gives more reverence to the Lord.

Never done it, but last time I was at an OF mass, was a few years back before I found and fell in love with the EF. If I am back at an OF mass in the future, I will recieve kneeling.

You don’t need to have a kneeler or a rail in order to do so. Simply kneel and open your mouth.

I prefer to be able to kneel for Communion with a rail or a kneeler as I have knee problems which sometimes can be aggravated if I am in a kneeling position for a very long time. It makes it easier for me to kneel where there is a padded surface to kneel on then receive then lean on the rail to get up again.

I did not see the priest deny Communion at any Mass (OF and EF Mass this weekend) to anyone who stood at the rail like many of the elderly did instead of kneeling.

I am in my 30’s and always receive standing / in the hand. This year when I’ve been attending more EF Masses, I always kneel and receive on the tongue.

BTW the celebrant of the Mass I attended that this is 90 years old, and he walked a bit slow but that’s normal for his age but he went from 1 side of the rail to the other to give the host with a server. I praise God that he is still in good health and able to serve God’s people still.

We have a priest here in his 90’s. Indeed these elderly priests need our prayers as the unselfishly bear the effort required.

OF: Ordinary Form / Novus Ordo / Mass of Paul VI (post Vatican II, in the vernacular)

EF: ExtraOrdinary Form / Latin Mass / Traditional Mass - Pre Vatican II (using the Roman Missal of 1962), and also approved by our Holy Father too… (which is wonderful)
