It’s not all about insurance. I only had to sit through one pitch, and that was right after I joined. This past Sunday I took my wife and daughter to the Knights Hall. We made Christmas cards, then walked across the street to the assisted living home. We had the kids hand out cards to the residents while singing Christmas carols. I assume it’s dependant on your local Council, but mine is a wonderful place to be. Good luck and congratulations.

Well, I popped on here to get some support. I am a little nervous today.
I am meeting at the Church at 730 pm to join the Knights of Columbus. I have no idea what I am getting into. I read about it on the web page, but really dont know how demanding it will be.

I work like 50-60 hours a week. I have had this weird feeling inside since I came back to the Church this past June that I need to give. I never felt this before. I have always been a selfish man.
Me, me and more me. Now all of a sudden, I need to do this.

I have also submitted my name to various volunteer orginizations here in town, like the soup kitchen and food banks.

Anyways, I think I am going nuts.

Can anyone tell me what I am in for?

Thanks all
P.S. I didnt know where to post this, hope its in the right forum.
Your doing a good thing outfctrl.

KoC will not require of you more than you can give. I usually work around 50 hours a week and have three kids a 6, 4 and 1 year old. Unfortunately with the fam, work and other activities, I can make it to meetings. KoC understands.

However, like many organization, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

Sincerely,

I am a 2nd degree Knight. I enjoyed the first 2 ceremonies… although I must (with humbleness) admit that I have understood these 2 illuminations very well for many many years now … subsequently I have struggled with friends and family that lack the deeper contemplations of these first 2 enlightenments, and in so doing undervalue their worth… for they are priceless, to one who truly understands what’s important.

I hope my 3rd and 4th will illuminate for me something that I am missing or have overlooked or not given enough attention to in my life?

Also,
KofC has introduced me to many a humble folks… there are always some who have “other” self-interest reasons for joining. (But they are greatly outnumbered)

I’ve been a member of Knights of Columbus for 3 years. I absolutely love it. We have found ways to be charitable outside meetings. For example we have fish fries during lent and we have a list of volunteers who work them. Every now and then we have like a chili supper open to the public and so forth. I give back to my council (1494) by publishing a monthly newsletter. It is a great organization to meet members of your church and to get to know them. It is a great organization to serve the community.

I filled out my paper work this last Sunday. I am not sure what the next step will be. The man that is in charge said that he will let me know what is next. Does anyone know what that may be?

You will be invited to attend a 1st degree ceremony. Depending on the timing it will either be in your local area or nearby. At the ceremony you will become a Knight, able to attend meetings and events. After your 1st degree you can then go through the 2nd and 3rd degree ceremonies. There is no time requirement between the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree as long as you go through them in order. Technically you can do all three in one night. Once you go through your 3rd degree you are a full-fledged Knight. It will then be up to you whether you go for the 4th degree.

I guess I will understand it all that first night right? I know tthat there are things that cannot be said but I know that its suppose to be very cool of the things that you learn that night right? I cannot wait I am really looking foward to it.

You will understand a lot after that night. Then you can attend a normal meeting and see what things are like outside the ceremony world.

Just be prepared for a hard sell on life insurance. It is a pretty good policy but you are not obligated to buy anything. This was something I was turned off by when I first joined. You probably noticed the block on the application form talking about life insurance, it will be mentioned during the ceremony and you will probably get a call from the local Knight life insurance agent soon after you become a member.

Can you PM me on the insurance or is that somthing that you can post?

Like I said it is a pretty good life insurance policy. Back when the KoC was first founded it was hard for Catholic men to get life insurance to provide for their families when they died so it was great then. It is still a top rated life insurance policy that unlike job related policies you can take it with you wherever you go. But since your profile mentions the army I bet you can probably get something better through Uncle Sam.

Info on the Knights policy is located here:
kofc.org/un/insurance/index.cfm

It is one of the few life insurance policies that actually has death benefits for stillborn/miscarried children and uninsurable children.

You are under no obligation to get a policy, but you will get a hard sell on buying it when you join.

The bad thing with what I have right now when my time is up I will losse my insurance. I can keep it but it cost alot. I only have around three to four years left and then I will need to get a good policy for my family. I am on KOF website looking into it right now. So it may be somthing that I could use.

I think I will be looking into it, I know that I will need somthing.

update:
Well, I still havent become a 2nd degree. I have had numerous mail from the knights about insurance, but no one has contacted me.
I havent attended any meetings since the first one. I havent been to Mass in months. Looks like I am slipping away from the Church. I really dont think I am worthy to be a knight.

My old habits are coming back. I am single, so you know what I mean.

Anyways, my faith is still here, but what does that count if I dont practice it. I am a mess…LOL

Everyone struggles with their faith at times. The key is to when you are down and falling pick yourself up, go to confession and start over again. Jesus will not give you a burden beyond your means but you have to be willing to stay the true path.

Go to confession, return to Mass. Unless you do that you will continue on a downward spiral. As for the KoC not contacting you, there is something wrong that they haven’t contacted you but be pro-active. Go to another meeting. Find out when the next 2nd degree ceremony is and go to it.

I have a question about tomorow. I go through my first degree. I know this sounds a little dumb but what should I wear. I don’t know if its casual or not. Anybody know?

I’m first degree. I just wore the same casual stuff I was wearing to church that morning, and the other guys did as well. It worked out.

With the Knights, it all depends on how much you want, or can, put into it.

The organization does a ton of great work, and I’m proud to be associated with it, even though it’s not the big area I put my time into.

I almost cried when I read this. Please get yourself to the confessional. Talk to a Priest. You sound like you are crying out for help.
