I have noticed, and would think that many here would be delighted, that priests are being especially attentive, scrupulous even, to the rubrics and texts of the New Translation. I noticed the priests at my Church taking time to do it right, reading the texts carefully during Mass, saying the worlds of the new translation correctly, and making sure that they get it right. Though they still are in an awkard phase, I appreciate their effort.
Our senior pastor likes two sacramentaries - now called roman missal - when he says Mass. He likes the big, ornate one brought to the altar for the liturgy of the Eucharist, but likes a smaller chapel size roman missal on the small table next to the presider’s chair. The altar server will hold the smaller missal for the collect and other prayers. But while setting up for Mass Thursday evening, I noticed that there was no new chapel missal, only the huge Church sized book. I mentioned it to him before the Mass, that I couldn’t find the smaller book, and he said that the priests had it back at the rectory and were using it to practice. Inquiring futher, apparently the priests are practicing and rehersing in what little spare time they have.
I think the new translation has, or will have, a side effect - intended or unintended - that of drawing priest’s attention to the correct words and rubrics, with the potential result being more consistency from Mass to Mass, from priest to priest, and from parish to parish. Those who are sensitive to liturgical inconcistencies have reason to be hopeful IMO.
I for one appreciate the hard work our priests are doing and believe that for this and other reasons, the new translation is more imporant and historic than many of us realize.
