I know quite a few police who have a concealed weapon when not in uniform. It’s just a part of their normal dress. Few of them even think to remove it before coming into church, and few of them would leave them locked in the car.
I do this too, leave it locked in car when I have too!, but this is because I did not have time to ask the priest if I could carry into the church I was visiting for the weekend.

The difference is when the Church makes a public statement saying no guns allowed, when compared to not making any statement!

I do carry a gun to church, every sunday! In my state the conceal carry law is that we must get permission from the pastor of the church to be allowed to carry in there. My priest is an NRA member, and he carries his too!
Oh that 's just great. Now we have Catholic parishoners carrying concealed guns in Church so that they can shoot people during Mass? And Catholic priests are also advocating membership in the NRA and are themselves secretly carrying concealed guns on their person during Mass? How many people need to be shot dead in our Catholic Churches before this nonsense will stop. It is time for Catholic laypeople and Catholic priests to stop carrying concealed guns or other weapons to our Catholic Masses and let us poor and humble Church goers to worship in peace and with peace of mind.

One of my pastors did a blessing of guns… just before hunting season… and his stocking the larder with caribou meat.

Likewise, I’ve seen guys go have an afternoon of shooting after liturgy; Father more than once asked them to bring the rifle in because he wanted to see it. (beautiful .223 semi-auto with helical mag…)

Byzman, can you cite any numbers about the number of shootings inside Catholic Churches during Mass or other services? I know you mentioned other denominations having some but there could be other reasons for that.

Wow…this is being plain ignorant! What makes you think that the Catholic Church is immune from a vicious attack? I hope you don’t think that this stuff can only happen in a protestant community?

Yep, here at CAF one the members (although I haven’t seen him post lately) is a priest, and he used to talk about, and occasionally provide photos, of his hunting trips.

However, I don’t think anyone in this thread is objecting to guns as such… The objection is to the presence of guns at Mass.

First off, we don’t pull out our guns and start shooting people anywhere we have the right to carry! We are not the criminals that have illegal handguns intending to commit a crime with them!

Secondly, any priest can have a personal life too. The NRA is a good conservative organization that promotes safety, gun ownership, and gun rights!

Was this post you posted intended as a joke? I am not sure. If not, what a poor way of thinking!

It’s a reasonable point. I was raised with the notion that, whether you had a gun in your home or not, you didn’t talk about it. It is better to leave the crooks guessing.

I own a gun and have no problem with guns. WV is an open carry state and I think it’s fantastic. However, my right to carry does not supersede a property owner’s right to do with their property what they please. Any property owner can tell me to back off and not enter their property with a gun.

Frankly, I think the Church has a responsibility to do so. “I am the Bread of Life.” That just doesn’t scream “carry a tool of death into my presence” to me.

And you know that a gun is safe when it is properly holstered on their person. Nothing deadly about that, right?

This is a constitutional right of the 2nd Amendment, and by the State, that the Bishops are not allowing in the Catholic Church in Louisiana. Bishops once again get it wrong here!
so a bar, store, restaurant or any other private property owner is also violating the constitution by banning guns on his property. No, actually those rights cease when you enter private property and that includes free speech. That is why, for instance, a teacher or student in a private or Catholic school is not allowed to spew forth anything that conflicts with the mission and ethic of the school.

No…they are not violating the constitution…I never said that! What they ought to do is use their freedom and allow guns on their property, knowing that this is truly in the best interest for the safety of others. Putting a ban in place does nothing to stop crimes from happening!

La. Bishops Ban Guns From Catholic Churches Despite Law Allowing Them

Published July 21, 2010 | Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. – Concealed handguns won’t be allowed in Roman Catholic churches, despite a new state law allowing them.

“We don’t think it is appropriate to have guns in churches,” Danny Loar, executive director of the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops – the church’s public policy arm in Louisiana, said Monday.

The law allows concealed handguns in churches, synagogues or mosques for those with a valid permit and training. It also says those with authority over a church have the final say in their church.

Bishops discussed the issue when reviewing bills, Loar said.

“The bishops decided that, if the bill became law, the bishops would let their pastors know that this would not be permissible in Catholic churches,” Loar said.

When one attends Mass he is at the foot of the Holy Cross on Calvary. He is in the presence of God spilling His Precious Blood for our Salvation… to bring arms to the foot of the Holy Cross is simply insulting.

Your very first post appears to express the opinion that the bishops were violating the constitution.

I expect guests in my home to be unarmed. Your right to carry stops at my front door. Obviously the bishops feel the same way.

In Spain in the 1930’s, Communists and Anarchists attacked so many churches, that men began regularly coming to mass packing pistols and rifles. Maybe in the future we’ll have to do it again.

When, yes when, that day comes again, in the presence of the Most Holy Eucharist we will follow Our Lord’s and the Saint’s example and accept martyrdom. Do you truly think the Nuns and clergy whom were martyred by the Red Terror in Spain were so because of a lack of weaponry?

In 1844, anti-Catholic extremists threatened violence in Philadelphia, the city’s bishop took a pacificist position, and two beautiful churches and a seminary were burned to the ground by rioters. By contrast, Bishop John Hughes of New York City, announced he would have armed men in every parish who would shoot if necessary, those who attacked Catholic Churches. The rioters backed down and not a single Catholic Church in NYC was attacked.

Those bishops are going too far. Next thing you know, they’ll be asking us to love our enemies.
