Byzman, you have to take into account people’s different attitudes towards guns. I would find it really frightening to be sitting in the next pew to someone carrying a gun. I’ve heard all the arguments about how guns make things safer: i don’t care. I prefer to be in a place where guns are not allowed. And I’m speaking for a lot of people.

canadianguy1143:
Byzman, can you cite any numbers about the number of shootings inside Catholic Churches during Mass or other services? I know you mentioned other denominations having some but there could be other reasons for that.
Wow…this is being plain ignorant! What makes you think that the Catholic Church is immune from a vicious attack?
I didn’t see where canadianguy1143 claimed that the Catholic Church is immune from vicious attack. Rather, he asked a question about your statement. Instead of attacking him for his ignorance, why not educate him by answering his question?

So, would CCW in a church that the bishop had banned weapons be a venial sin?

After there was a robbery at St. Patrick’s in NYC, the cathedral posted guards. However, they are not armed.

There is no reason for CCW in church. It is a place of peace.

La. Bishops Ban Guns From Catholic Churches Despite Law Allowing Them

Published July 21, 2010 | Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. – Concealed handguns won’t be allowed in Roman Catholic churches, despite a new state law allowing them.

“We don’t think it is appropriate to have guns in churches,” Danny Loar, executive director of the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops – the church’s public policy arm in Louisiana, said Monday.

The law allows concealed handguns in churches, synagogues or mosques for those with a valid permit and training. It also says those with authority over a church have the final say in their church.

Bishops discussed the issue when reviewing bills, Loar said.

“The bishops decided that, if the bill became law, the bishops would let their pastors know that this would not be permissible in Catholic churches,” Loar said.

So I guess they must now be worn in a hip holster, exposed! What about uniformed cops or plainclothes detectives going to or from work?

Why on earth do you need a gun in church? People are taking this 2nd amendment thing too far.

Wow…this is being plain ignorant! What makes you think that the Catholic Church is immune from a vicious attack? I hope you don’t think that this stuff can only happen in a protestant community?
Are you english? How does asking for specific numbers about gun attacks makes me ignorant?

In other words you have no numbers to justify this, just mass hysteria.

Thank you Digitonomy. I await his response.

Heck, I’m Canadian. If someone here heard someone on the streets talking about bringing a gun to Mass, we’d have the SWAT team surrounding them before they could say “boo”.

In all fairness, you specified “inside Catholic Churches during Mass or other services”, and then seemed to dismiss shootings in other denominations as “there could be other reasons for that”.

This happened at a protestant church about 10 miles from my parish:

I would say there is a certain amount of “mass hysteria” involved in the demonization of gun owners.

What are the incidence of a legal conceal/carry gun owners, carrying their legal firearm in church, firing for no reason on other churchgoers?

If you can’t provide that figure, can I flippantly dismiss your concerns as “you have no numbers to justify this, just mass hysteria”?

My concerns are more about the appropriateness of a tool of death in front of Christ in the Sacrament than they are about any risk from a law-abiding carrier.

First off, we don’t pull out our guns and start shooting people anywhere we have the right to carry! We are not the criminals that have illegal handguns intending to commit a crime with them!

Secondly, any priest can have a personal life too. The NRA is a good conservative organization that promotes safety, gun ownership, and gun rights!

Was this post you posted intended as a joke? I am not sure. If not, what a poor way of thinking!
What?!! A poor way of thinking?!! This is insane to have all these concealed guns and weapons being brought to Church by everyone and anyone so that they can shoot anyone they like in Church during Mass?

When one attends Mass he is at the foot of the Holy Cross on Calvary. He is in the presence of God spilling His Precious Blood for our Salvation… to bring arms to the foot of the Holy Cross is simply insulting.
Of course.

How about this! I will state it this way. Knowing that the Bishops in Louisiana do not allow me to carry legally in their churches, I will not be making a visit to their churches any time soon. Since you are correct in saying we as Catholics must fulfill our obligation, I will stay here, where I am welcome in churches that I can carry my choice of weapon.👍
Wow, the 1st Amendment Right of free association in action, just as the Bishops in Louisiana have. You have no “right” to impose your presence where it is not wanted, and the good Bishops are only exercising their 1st Amendment Right to forbid you entry to Mass while carrying an idol.

I don’t see that you ever answered my question in reply to you: why do you want a gun in a church service to begin with?

I know quite a few police who have a concealed weapon when not in uniform. It’s just a part of their normal dress. Few of them even think to remove it before coming into church, and few of them would leave them locked in the car.
Ah, the differences between our two countries. There you have off-duty policemen carrying concealed weapons to Mass and here we have parishioners tearing a strip off a policeman for wearing his gun when he attended Mass in full uniform.😉

For the record, I do have my conclead carry permit, and I own several guns.

Anyone remember that church shooting in Colorado that happened a few years ago? If someone pulls a gun and starts shooting people, I PRAY (pseudo pun intended) that other people have guns, so they can stop the armed maniac from killing people.

I don’t know if you are being sarcastic or if you are being serious when you post this ridiculous stuff!?
