La. bishops: No guns in Catholic churches

I have seen police officers, including uniformed police officers, at Mass. They were all carrying handguns. Obviously, the uniformed officer’s gun was in plain sight.

Most jurisdictions prohibit officers from not having their guns with them at all times, particularly when they are in uniform.

Is it the intent of the La. bishops to prohibit police officers from attending Mass?
I told a police officer at Mass that the next time he should not attend Mass strapped.

Police officers are not required to carry weapons at all times – they are urged to do so in some big cities like Chicago and NYC. In Chicago officers are not allowed to carry arms if they will be out drinking. If one can resist bearing a weapon in a gin mill surely a person can keep a holy place a place of peace.

Are you suggesting an off duty police officer would go on a shooting rampage if allowed to carry at mass?

I know you don’t pay much attention to we downstate flyover slobs, but this happed 10 miles from my parish, just last year.

Look on the bright side: the only ones who can have handguns in Chicago are cops, or criminals, in any case! 😉

Chances are, you are safe rampaging gun owners.

I am very surpirsed by the response I have generated on this thread by some here. I really see just how so many people can be so ignorant when it comes to guns. I am even more surpirsed by one man’s comments about “NRA vigilantes.” I cant believe this person really believes this stuff. I hope he is joking by hijacking this thread. To tell you the truth, I really don’t know if it was one or another also, who has said some of these blatantly stupid comments. I am not trying to be mean, but I must say this is just uncalled for. To you guy(s), I must ask, are you liberal? Do you watch the liberal media for you source of info?

Now there is more states than just Louisiana, and these states allow concealed carry in their churches, and no Catholic Bishop has stood up like this group and said “absolutely not.” Obviously, it is not a matter of “does a gun belong in a church,” but it is a matter of preference. I dont even live near Louisiana, nor do I intend to visit this state, especially now, but I will say that I think I will write these Bishops, get as much info as I can, and will get their response. I am just an everyday guy, actually in school for theology, who believes the 2nd Amendment should be practiced in a Catholic church!

Why are you calling those who disagree, “stupid”? Is that part of your theology training? And so what if someone is liberal? Many many Catholics are!

I didn’t call anyone stupid! I said “stupid comments.” Big difference! I think you are smart enough to figure that out(My so-called theology training tells me to say this).👍

that’s splitting hairs

people are only disagreeing with you on what you must acknowledge is a very controversial subject.

Do you watch the liberal media for you source of info?
I don’t own a TV. My opinion is based on the fact that I’ve been going to church for a very long time, and have never been shot at. Not once.

Before this downgrades into childish name calling or something, it might be best to just agree to disagree and move on.

I thank God we live in a country and have a public forum like CAF where people can disagree and no one gets arrested

The NRA vigilantes are now advocating their rights to carry concealed loaded guns into our Catholic Churches, which were once places of quiet and sanctuary. And according to them, anyone who disagrees is ignorant and stupid. In other words, according to the NRA advocates, you are ignorant and stupid if you show any concern at all about these loaded, concealed, horrible weapons being brought into Church while children are trying to pray there. As we have seen above, their response to our concerns is: “blah, blah, blah.” That is their answer.
I think we have to protest and protect our Churches against these armed vigilante groups who are trying to take over.

Yes, and according to people on your side, we are “vigilantes”, or my personal favorite, “Kooks” (I wear that one as a badge of honor.) It goes both ways my friend. It’s more complicated than you want to admit. Your side isn’t as morally pure as you’d like to think.

And you’ll protect your churches-great. I admire than. And when someone decided to rob you, out of respect for your rights-I’ll won’t interfere. Don’t want to act like a ::ahem:: vigilante…👍

Why are you taking concealed guns in Church except to keep a watch out for a possible criminal activity in the Church. Isn’t this the definition of vigilanteism? In fact, the word itself comes from the Spanish vigilante which means watchman or vigilant man. I don;t see your objection to this term.
On the other hand, if we want our Churches to be free of the loaded, concealed and horrible weapons, we are called ignorant and stupid. That is not what Catholics who want peace in their Church are at all. I would bet that the education of those who are calling us ignorant and stupid is far below that of many Catholics who want a Church free of guns.

Well, I’m working on my MA in English. If you’d like to compare educations, I’d be happy to discuss with you on an email/another thread. I’ll even gleefully send you a copy of my transcripts. Until then, why don’t you keep to the issue instead of saying “they’re calling us ignorant and stupid!”?

I am sure glad that my posts are forever recorded into these forums here, so that way it can be seen by anyone who reads these posts that I never called anyone stupid, as this guy(sidbrown) claims!

I would just like to point out that all of you outside of the state of LA are far more concerned and fired up against this than those actually IN the state of LA. Those in the state that I know with gun permits leave them at home anyways when attending Mass.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that…I don’t know exactly how many people are on this topic in this forum, but there are some Catholics who are planning and have already wrote to their Bishops from what is being said here. Grant it, as with any other forum that is not Catholic affiliated, there are some very rude comments, but there are others who seem to be sincere Catholics.

Byzman, your reaction may have to do with the social circles in which you talk. Its not a matter of being liberal or conservative. Its a matter of prudence, and whether one thinks that having a gun with you, wherever you go, including church, will lessen death or create deaths. If you are surprised by the reaction here, perhaps you need a wider circle of social contacts, other than with gun enthusiasts.

Well, then you should know the derivation of the word vigilante and have no objection to it as used in this context.
Yes, because like all English majors, we memorize every single word in existence and all the ways it can be used. We never use common vernacular.
