I have come across some women who feel that makeup is too materialistic. Comments. Opinions.
Clothes are made out of material. I hope these same women don’t think *clothes *are too materialistic.

Or maybe these women wear special habits :nun1: in which case they have taken vows to live lives set apart from the rest of us?

While some may accuse women who wear make-up of vanity, I wonder if a woman who believes she needs make-up to look okay is really any more vain than a woman who doesn’t think she needs make-up to be attractive?? :ehh:

I voted no. Maybe, once every couple of years I’ll use lipstick. Maybe four times a year I’ll wear perfume. But frankly it’s expensive, time consuming and a bother, and when all is said and done you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig and lipstick on it won’t fool anyone, so why bother.

I wear some most days, but not a lot. Usually foundation, mascara, maybe a neutral gloss. I work in an office that’s pretty conservative and still enforces a strict ‘business professional’ dress code, and I don’t feel like I’ve got my ‘suit’ on without it.

Having a huge business/office work past, it was recommended to dress professional, and be well groomed, that included women putting on their face everyday. The general consensus is when you look good, you feel good, you are confident, and other people are confident in you and/or your service/product.
I never wear makeup. I do work in a professional environment (defence engineering) but don’t have time/can’t be bothered/couldn’t justify the expense, and I refuse to, in about equal parts.

I can’t cope with this idea that a woman must paint her face as part of professional grooming and I’d be prepared to lose/leave a job over it. I have no problem with dress codes, nor with the need to look immaculate in some occupations. The difference to me is that we all have to dress and tidy our hair, so variations in the way we do that to suit our job is reasonable, but my face is me and I think it’s unacceptable to suggest a female employee must paint/change/alter hers to be considered “professional”. (This is not aimed at you, OLHope, I know you’re stating a general expectation.)

The exceptions to that are performing arts and modelling where make up is a part of bringing out features and expressions on camera and on stage, but in those cases it applies to both genders and achieves a specific purpose.

It also bothers me a little when people talk of women who can “get away” with not wearing make-up, as if there is some defined benchmark for a woman’s appearance rating that she must apologise for falling short of.

IMO some occupational make-up is self-defeating. When I had long hair and wore it up, it had to be a style I knew would stay up securely all day without three maintenance trips to the ladies room to re-fasten it. I feel the same about make-up - if it needs maintenance, forget it. Maybe the airline stewardesses look great when they first get to work but by halfway through their shift makeup usually looks tired and oily and my reaction is “yuck”, not, “isn’t that make-up the finishing touch to a nice professional appearance.” I’d rather see a clean face.

I am probably over-sensitive as my mother spent her whole life apologising to the rest of the world for everything including her appearance, and I had to put a conscious wall up against her projecting the same attitudes onto me.

All that said, I have no issues whatsoever with other women wearing makeup. If it makes any woman feel happier, more confident, more feminine or she just plain likes to do it, then I’m all for it and it’s a good thing. It’s attempts to make it a requirement or inferences that a woman is ungroomed or unprofessional till she paints her face that I object to.

Excellent point and well made.

There is, however, a third category of women who don’t see “attractive” in that sense as a requirement in the first place. Not all of us who eschew makeup do so solely because we don’t think we “need” it 😉

I don’t.

I don’t have any noble reasons. It’s just another thing I’d have to deal with in the morning. :o

I voted no, but I do wear makeup occasionally. Some weeks I will put lipstick on in the car on the way to Mass. If we are going somewhere special, I will wear makeup. But, just to give an idea how much I wear, I bought some eye shadows and lipstick when I was pregnant with my third. I still have both and the child will turn 12 this summer. As a matter of fact, that lipstick is my favorite shade and I found out it had been discontinued at least five years ago.

I will wear body sprays or very light perfumes, but still not that often.

ETA: This all started in high school. When I was old enough to start wearing makeup, my dad kept telling me that I was pretty enough and that I did not need it. He was correct that my skin was good, my color was good, etc. I also never really learned to do makeup or hair.

until i was about 20, i wouldn’t leave the house without any makeup. gradually, i started cutting back to just lipstick and blush. for the past 15 years, i haven’t worn any make up.
luckily, i have naturally long eyelashes so i don’t need mascara.

Including my shower, getting dressed, drying my hair and makeup and depending on how tired I am in the morning, it might take about 15-20 minutes all together.
Sarabande, I am absolutely in awe. You can do all that in 15-20 minutes?

It takes me longer than that just to get out of bed and remember how to turn on the shower!

Oh, boy, can I relate to this! :yup: I was sooooo self-conscious without makeup when I was younger, I wouldn’t even go the grocery store without it. Now, I almost never wear it … not because I think I’m “hot stuff” (I don’t), but most of it irritates my skin (even the mineral makeup feels itchy after awhile), and in all honesty I have a “baby-face” so anything more than light powder and light lipstick just looks like a little girl playing in mom’s makeup box. Doesn’t help that I’m on the small side (five feet). Sigh.

Oh well. I was fortunate enough to inherit somewhat-long, somewhat-dark lashes, so could be worse. 😉

I usually only wear concealer under my eyes, because most of the time I don’t get enough sleep 😛 When I have a special event I also use on eye-liner, eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss.

I never wear foundation all over my face, I hate the feeling of having a “layer” on my face.

During summer, I love not wearing any make-up at all (when I tan my dark circles are much less evident :D).

I don’t feel like I’m being materialistic when I put on make-up, I just see it as a little extra like putting on really nice clothes or something.

Oh, and I love perfume!

I like to wear a little powder and lipgloss, nothing else. I have very oily skin–still have acne at 30 years old!–so anything more makes me feel greasy and uncomfortable. Interestingly enough, my husband has told me repeatedly that he does not like makeup and would prefer me not to wear it. I’m very curious to know if men feel this way in general or if it’s just him!
I’ve dated several men who were adamant that they liked the “natural look” (i.e., no makeup). So, yes, they are out there … thank goodness for me! 🙂
As for perfume, I’ve never found a scent that I liked. I much prefer bath gels and lotions.
CG, this is my weakness, too … shower gels & scented lotions … and add to that nice-smelling shampoos! :yup: I am constantly falling into the trap of buying “just one more,” even when I have way too many at home already. :o

Perfume is just TOO strong for me, but I can’t resist those heavenly-scented shampoos, gels, and lotions!

I voted no, but I do wear it on rare occasions. I wear it when my husband and I go out for a special date. I am not good at putting makeup on anyway, so when I do wear it, it consists of mascara and lipstick. It’s bad for my skin. 😛

Me, too…I am addicted to Bath & Bodyworks store…😊

hahahaha! Yes. Basically, I like to sleep as long as possible and I don’t like to waste time with anything. I tend to multitask with everything. (For instance, while I’m writing here, I’m also looking over a music website one of my colleagues made for me and asked to review, and I am also thinking of other ways to market myself on my website as well as thinking about the opera role I’m learning for a performance and even more especially, our potentially growing family and how I’m going to get our home ready if everything comes out fine.) I think what has helped me is the pure fact that I’m too busy to want to spend time getting myself ready and too lazy to put in the effort - unless it is for my performance gigs. In that regard, I do take longer to get ready but that’s because it’s all part of a persona and a character for my profession. But in regular, everyday life, I can’t be bothered with taking too much time.

I don’t know if this will help, but I will make a mental note of the clothes I want to wear while I’m showering. (Sometimes, I will shower at night to cut down on time in the morning.) I also have all my toilettetries in one place and in the same order so that I just go down the line with my acne care and moisturizer and any makeup if I’m wearing any that day. Since I don’t wear much make-up it literally takes me maybe a minute to freshen me up. My clothes are ordered according to the garment style, the season(s) they can be worn, if it is casual or dressy and by color. My jeans are all in one place for easy access since I wear those almost every day. My shoes are also in an order so that I don’t have to look for them and just know where they are by grabbing in the approximate location. Accessories are the same. This helps me in remembering what I have when I’m doing the mental attire for the day.

I have to be like this because I’m constantly running around and I just like having things like this in order. Not everything in my home is this orderly, but these are because I have to deal with it every morning.

If I’m not leaving the house I don’t put it on. Other than that I wear at least foundation and a little blush, I’m quite fair skinned. If we’re going out to dinner or something special I’ll do eye shadow and sometimes eye liner. I just recently starting wearing eye liner and eye shadow again after more than 15 years of not bothering. My eyes just look so small lately in pictures so I do it to bring them out a bit. And most of the time I wear lipstick as well. I do like perfume but forget to use it most of the time.

Well, I’m a guy and I just want to say (no, not going to say “I” wear makeup, in case anyone thought that :D) that my wife 99% of the time never wears it. She wore it at our wedding, and a few special occasions, but that’s all.

Frankly, as long as selfish vanity is not involved, which can become anything from clothes to fitness to toys, i don’t mind makeup on ladies and at times like it—because i like color 🙂 I love looking at God’s beautiful creation of flowers, birds, bright sea creatures, etc. and so when my wife or a lady is wearing a nice eye shadow, lipstick or blush (as long as it’s not overdone) well I think that’s very pretty—which is a respectful compliment :o

No, I have never worn any, all the ones I tried when I was 16ish (or so), I was allergic to.

My mother always wore it and couldn’t even go to the mail box without it, that kind of turned me off even wanting to wear it.

My husband doesn’t care for made up women, he says it makes him afraid to even touch them. He might mess something up and get yelled at. He thinks I’m more beautiful without any on.

We have been married for 43 years and we are still deeply in love so, I believe him.
