Ladies only survey: Do you wear makeup and if not why?

I wear Bare Escentuals make-up. I’ve been wearing it for five years now. I like it because it is natural and it does not make me look as though I’ve got gobs and gobs of makeup. When I helped out at the Cathedral, I would sometimes be working on preparations for special liturgies up until the last minute, which meant that I would need a place to apply my makeup. This place was the sacristy. The lighting was good and the mirror was huge. Unfortunately, my rector walked in on me as I was wrapping up. He looked at my lipstick and said that it was not his shade. But, he knew the time constraints and was considerate.

I’ve been able to do this, especially with BE, under fifteen minutes, and, that is a full face. Without makeup I have a multitude of sins (facial flaws) that would cause my dachshunds to run from me. BE gives me confidence and the colors are not garrish. Of course, I must confess that I spend a lot of money since I tend to pick up just every new kit that comes out on QVC, Sephora, Ulta and the boutique. My purse is so full of Buxom Lips, lipsticks and glosses that I could actually use it as a lethal weapon.

I also wear philosophy fragrances. I suffer from migraines. Scents like Channel, Juicy Couture and the other department store fragrances kill me. I was skeptical about ordering Amazing Grace, Pure Grace, Baby Grace, Falling in Love and Unconditional Love, but, when I tried each of them out, I was migraine free. I especially love Pure Grace shower cream. The other shower gels matching the fragrances are also excellent. I also use Ultimate Clean and Fresh Laundry by Clean. If you suffer from migraines, the Clean brand is just as good as philosophy.

I love Amazing Grace skin cream. I got my first tube as a gift. It is a little pricey so I only use it when I am going someplace special. I am going to start looking into their other products. Thanks for listing them.

I agree with your whole post, but I just wanted to say that make-up itself is neutral, does not exist in a moral sphere. The reasons and motivationspeople have when they choose to wear/not wear it DO exist in the moral sphere, and in that sense may or may not be moral. But since no human person can know if a person’s reasons for doing something are moral/immoral, we must just leave it at: you can wear makeup or not, it’s your choice! and I think this thread has amply showed that!

Tune into QVC. They have a lot of great deals. In fact, Amazing Grace shower gel sells for about $30. It is 32-oz. They also have kits that are value priced. Sometimes they have them on easy pay. HSN, which carries the Clean fragrance line also has some great deals and they, too, are on flex pay.

I wear makeup because it makes me look a hck of a lot better than when I dont wear any. Where I live most people look so pretty and handsome. I also would like to look pretty. Its natural.
Like some of the other posters here, its much about complexion and skin… If I wear powder suddenly i look like a princess while before I looked like miss red and shiny.
Also, I get many compliments when I have a nice makeup. If I dont wear it… I dont look good. People dont believe it but its true.
Perfume. No. Dont need it. I shower every day.

You might consider just using the essentials for times when you might be invited out. Believe me. I remember having to cut on expenses, but, you can find some good, inexpensive cosmetics out there.

When I was in college, I took an internship at the Texas House of Representatives and I had to look presentable, so, makeup became a necessity. The internship was not a paid one, though, and so I had to scrimp and save. I was grateful for those times when the makeup companies had a gift with purchase. That turned out to be a real money-saver.

I never thought this thread would have so many posts. Very fascinating indeed. I have been told that it was VERY wise of me to limit this thread to the ladies, and I can see why. However, I do feel compelled to give a man’s perspective and a few observations:

I wanted to learn from people here who have a “moral” objection to cosmetics, make up and their reasons for it.

I would like to share something about that.

If we cut ourselves, we put a band-aid on. The band-aid conceals the blemish, not the body that God created.

If we have acne problems, is it wrong to use products that remove acne? Acne is not something that we create ourselves and certainly we can look better without it.

For myself, good makeup accentuates natural beauty. It does not conceal how we look but conceals (band-aid) perhaps what isn’t always so good.

The issue here is it okay to want to look physically beautiful. Some people don’t need make up to look that way. They don’t have sun damage or acne or whatever. The fact that there are some that are natural beauties, should tell you what God thinks about it.

This isn’t really true. People wear band-aids to help the cuts heal and to prevent infection. They certainly don’t make the blemish look any better. In fact, they often make it look worse and more obvious. Also, many acne products don’t really help the problem. I had pretty bad acne when I was younger and didn’t use products. OK, the main reason was because I was way too lazy. However, most acne clears up in time. For me, it cleared up when I stopped playing softball and didn’t have all that dirt around. Again, though, the products aren’t really to cover things up. They are supposed to be to correct a problem. Uneven skin tone really isn’t a problem I say. Of course, I don’t find teenage acne to be a problem, either. It is a part of the age. I do have sun damage. I don’t wear makeup. I don’t see the need to hide it.

Or even Everyday Minerals. I like Bare Essentuals a lot, but I can’t afford it, so I’ve started using Everday Minerals. It’s flawless and natural-looking - AND it won’t hurt your pocketbook much. Plus it has more choices in base. The stuff I get from there has lasted me forever, like almost a year - except for the base - so that’s where I save the money. Bare Essentuals lasted me a long time as well, but just doesn’t cost as much.

I wear make-up about once or twice a week, when I think of it. I am in my 40’s, and I definately wear a “dated” look, the make-up look that was worn in the late 1970’s/early 80’s. You know, very little eye makeup ( I never wear mascara), definately wear blush, and lipstick that is reddish. I think it’s so funny to see what the girls wear now: tons of black eyliner, no blush, and very pale or no lipstick. To my late 1970’s beauty sense, it seems sort of like a “Bride of Dracula” look! No offense, you kids out there; it just depends on what you’re used to!

grin When I do actually wear makeup, I’m one of “you kids” (well, depending on the venue) - and no offense taken! It’s really neat to hear how my appearance looks to someone with different aesthetics.

To me / others my age or younger, I think the idea is to draw more attention to the “soulful” part of the face, the eyes, rather than to the more “sensual” parts of the face, like the mouth. And, of course, to look different than the last generation But I also do think it’s an expression of the sort of ennui that seems so pervasive and in-style these days . . . okay, I’m depressed by that thought, time to go spend some time with the kiddos!

I am generally what you might call a plain catholic. This means that I wear mainly black, or earth toned colours. My skirts are long and so are my sleeves. I cover the top of my head with a small scarf. But I am still a woman who needs to be somewhat pleasing to my husband. I dont wear foundation or powder, but I do wear a light shade of lipstick and a quick sweep of eye liner. I like a soft fragrance. My hair is long, so that gets clipped back into a bun. I dress in a way as to not put a stumbling block in front of any man.

I’m generally too darned lazy to apply make-up, but I’m trying to convert. Now I do carry a tube of neutral pink lip gloss or lipstick in my purse, and sometimes a cream stick eyeshadow in a kind of light-browny-gold colour. I’ve never liked the caked-on look, and luckily my skin is fair, even, and generally blemish-free, so I don’t even own foundation or powder. When I do apply make-up, it looks almost like I’m not wearing any at all, but it brings out my eyes and lips, I think.

I admit to feeling a little… I don’t know… negative about the idea of wearing make-up. Not like it’s unholy or makes God angry, but more like… natural beauty looks better than man-made, you know? But then, who am I to judge, when my skin is generally good and I don’t have any features on my face that I feel need to be accentuated or hidden? And then, I like to have my toenails painted in summer, although I really hate seeing my fingernails any color other than natural.

As for perfume, generally I can’t be bothered with it, but I love it when I catch a whiff of my boyfriend’s cologne every now and again. I do sometimes wear a nice refreshing citrus scent - if I knew what my boyfriend liked, I might wear that too. I know he likes me with lip gloss, so I try to wear that when he’s around. Here in Korea, people dress up, and so if I look around and notice I’m underdressed, I’ll apply lip gloss to make myself feel a little more presentable.

Gosh, that was a disorganized response. Oh well.

yup…i love makeup!!!..
mm…i dont wear make up to uni though because
a) its not worth it, il all my products dry
b) prob sweat it off with all the walking i do.

but, every party i go to, i pack on the eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara (i wont wear foundation…unless i need to cover up somthing)!!!..hehe, especially, if there is someone special to impress!!
