The 90 lashes are not done all at once, they are divided over several weeks…

So you disagree with the infallible Word of God on this?
23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
Nope…but I have a question for ya now. Are you selling everything you own and giving it to the poor to go and follow Jesus? I believe that Jesus sad that.

Luke 18:22 (Douay Rheims)
**Which when Jesus had heard, he said to him: Yet one thing is wanting to thee: sell all whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. **

Unbalanced and Unfair. why did foxnews distort the story ?

note, this is all-girl school,
The teacher took the cellphone from the girl during the class (since it has a camera , thus violate the school rules). But after that, the girl came to the teacher’s office the next day and threw a glass bottle on her head that resulted a serious head injury. The court judged that 90 lashes (on the hands , in the classroom) and 2 months in rehabilitation facility.
Can you document for us what happened to the teacher the next day?

People here are trying to bash our friend in the Middle East Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has been a long time ally of the USA and in fact, its leader has met with the Pope recently. Some people do not want to continue the good relationship that exists between Saudi Arabia and other countries such as the USA.

Saudi Arabia? A good friend? The alliance between Saudi Arabia and the United States is based simply on oil for the U.S. and defense for Saudi Arabia (from Iran???). A good friend? That would be countries like England or Germany.

When the price of oil is surging…where is Saudi Arabia with increasing production enough to make a difference.

Yes. Why are you and others trying to destroy the good friendship that exists between the USA and Saudi Arabia?

No one on this forum is capable of destroying any kind of alliance between the US and another country. But I am saying Saudi Arabia is not a good friend. A good friend would be England or Germany.

I didn’t look at the pictures…but I do remember seeing Jiang Zemin in Washington with a smile on his face wearing a cowboy hat and being greeted by President Clinton. Does that make Jiang Zemin a good friend.

I didn’t look at the pictures…
That’s too bad becasue Saudi Arabia is one of the best friends that the USA has in the Middle East. In this world in which we live, I think it is better to cultivate friends than to make enemies. What is the purpose of slanting a news article and putting Saudi Arabia in a bad light? Are you just trying to cause trouble by spreading slanted and exaggerated information in this case? Why not tell the whole truth about the story from the beginning instead of not giving the complete picture?

You’ve changed the subject here.

No one on this forum can do anything to endanger the alliance between the US and another country.

But…as I said…you’ve changed the subject from your statement that the bible says it’s good to beat the hell out of someone. Are you going to sell all your belongings…give the money to the poor… and follow Jesus?

BTW…FYI

The Saudi court system is exclusively controlled Wahahbi/Salafi clerics, and bans the employment of non-Salafi citizens, especially as judges.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s leading country in the use of torture-by-flogging, public beheadings and publically crucifying condemned prisoners.

The country crucified two people in 2009, including one in the capital Riyadh during President Barak Obama’s visit last April.

I guess the above makes the Saudi religious gestapo…and judges great followers of the Bible.

The 90 lashes are not done all at once, they are divided over several weeks…
I read that too when I linked to other articles about this type of punishment in Saudi Arabia.

For perspective, 90 lashes might not really be that many considering that some sentences I saw were up to 300 lashes. Apparently, they generally give about 10 at a time to women and 50 at a time to men about 2 weeks apart. I’m not sure if it’s better or worse to have your punishment dragged out for weeks and to know that it’s coming for days on end.

Also, I read that in some cases lasher has to hold the a holy book under his arm so that the action is only with the elbow and wrist. It’s apparently not on bare skin usually either but on a clothed bottom. No doubt that it hurts but it’s not a “Passion of the Christ” style flogging, either

Not that any of this excuses it but I agree with Haadi that we should clearly understand what they are actually doing. It’s not AS barbaric as it initially sounds.

Homicides, rapes, robbery,( all crimes that are part of human culture) vehicle theft,(maybe a donkey a horse, more likely your sandals) burglary, (all are crimes of human nature-how we deal with these crimes are a mark of how a culture deals with forgiveness, mercy, redemption)these are all crimes that should be taken with the culture of our time. If we follow the Bible in the area of discipline, perhaps there would be less crime and fewer people wanting to arm themselves with loaded guns as protection against criminals.
Lex Talionis-measure for measure justice was put in place of a.buying your way out-like the rich and the nobles. b. the opposite bloody vendettas that lasted for generations. The Bible laws were put in place to show not all crimes could and should be subject to a fine paid. Not every breach of honor or society should be subject to vilolence. Punishment fitting the crime was the aim and equanimity between rich and poor in dealing with justice.I doubt in the Laws that a child would be subjected by the elders 90 lashes- which was way beyond what the Israelites limit of lashes for what she had done–doesn’t matter how spread out they are they are still beyond the limit.
In this day and age what is the point of punishment? Coming fom a Saudi home with the knowledge of saudii punishment she would have been aware of the consequences which leads me to think that there is much more to the story then meets the eye. What was really going on here? bullying?repressive tactics by school officials or classmates.?

There is something else to this story.

It doesn’t sound too unappealling to me, to have these rowdy teenagers lashed for using cell phones in class. Granted, this one was only 13, wasn’t actually using the cell phone, and fewer than 10 lashes probably would’ve been sufficient (90 is quite a lot).

But we can all console ourselves with the fact that, if things go as they have gone recently, in about 50 or so years these people will be just as undiscipolened, slovenly, and probaby obese as we are; they’re kids will all have cell phones by age 8, learning will be last on their priority list (as it is for 98% of Americans) and they will, by the age of 16, believe with an unshakable certainty, as American teenagers do, that the world belongs entirely them, that human existence is simply a movie of which they are the protagonist.

Maybe the Arabians should reconsider the fairness of their penal code, but the ***last ***thing we westerners should be worrying about is too much discipline, too harsh punishments: American children today are simply animals.
Not just an American problem either, the children of the west generally seem too indulged. Those ubiquitous cell phones are one of the worst things ever to fall in to the hands of young people, kids in particular, because it allows them to operate below the moral radar of their elders and carers.

However, so many lashes for a 13 year old is pretty draconian by anyone’s standard. However, we in the west can only yell and scream and the Saudis will thumb their noses and say, “Well, look at your kids!”.
It’s a bit like casting the first stone…

What instrument is used to deliver these lashes? Is she going to end up crippled with all the bones in her hands broken? I still think that 90 is excessive.

How many lashes does a man usually get if convicted of serious assault?

One other thing, Jubail is not on the Red Sea as stated in the story. It is on the Persian Gulf.

I’ve served in Saudi Arabia the majority of the Saudi people I’ve met are good people.

You must understand the Royal family rules that country but they don’t run it.

The Mullahs run it and if the Mullahs say overthrow the current Royal family the Saudi people will do it. So the Royal family is in a sticky situation but for years the Royal family i.e. the Kings have been putting reforms into the Kingdom but they have done it one step at time.

Just to get Radio in the Kingdom was a major feat. The King said he wanted to modernize the Kingdom by putting in Radio stations. The Mullahs were against it.

So the King had a meeting with the head Mullahs and as they’re having this meeting the King turns on a Radio, and what do they hear?

A Mullah reading the Holy Quran, the King said, “Is this not a good thing? We can spread the Word of God to the people in the Desert”? So the Mullahs agreed this is good and gave him permission to bring Radio into the Kingdom. I hope you noticed they gave him permission.

We Americans and others in the west need to understand that the two most Holy Cities in Islam is in the Saudi Kingdom if the Royal family gets stupid the entire Islamic world will rise up against them and take them out. The Royal family is very good allies with the United States has been since WWII. As for people complaining about the oil thing you need to look at American history:

Below is an answer I posted months ago to somebody who talked about American imperialism:

Now here is some real American history:

Views of American history, distort our present policies. Involvement in far-flung and unpopular conflicts doesn’t represent a recent innovation or the result of some conspiratorial takeover of U.S. foreign policy. American military involvement in remote corners of the globe characterized every stage of our emergence as a world power. The purpose of these conflicts and interventions has little connection to colonialism or conquest or empire building in the classical sense. More often the United States has done this for unselfish intentions. Regardless of the wisdom behind these frequent military or diplomatic initiatives, their overall, long-term impact most often benefited the peoples involved as well as the world at large.

Unlike other empires in human history, the powerful American sphere of influence has generally promoted the cause of both prosperity and liberty.

People forget the United States fought its first war against Islamic extremism more than two hundred years ago. This is where we get the first verse of the “Marines’ Hymn” “to the shores of Tripoli."

The first Barbary War (1801-5) lasted four years after President Thomas Jefferson sent the new Navy to the Mediterranean to protect American interests and honor. The semi-nations of Algeria, Tunisia, and Tripoli [today Libya] functioned like today’s State sponsors of terrorism backing ruthless pirates who devastated U.S. shipping until Washington paid lavish tribute to these local thugs.

The United States has a long-standing tradition of small wars or so-called low intensity conflicts. If you study U.S. military history it has a tradition of fighting small wars. Between 1800 and 1934, U.S. Marines staged 180 landings abroad. The army and navy added a few small-scale engagements of their own. Some resulted in heavy casualties; others involved not fighting. Most of these campaigns were fought by a small number of professional soldiers. I can testify to this from some of the missions I was involved in though the 1970s -1990s.

I just want to scream when I hear not well educated on the subject or left wing Hollywood stars, politicians and educated life wing college professors totally distort the Bush administration Iraq policy saying this is the first time we have ever attacked a country without being attacked first. They are either ignorant of the facts or dishonest!

Do I agree with the Saudi justice system well as a Catholic I think you know the answer?

I’ve serve beside Egyptian and Saudi military met the civilian people and they’re good people they’re just like us just different religions.

It is only an apparently low crime rate. Ordinary people are relatively law abiding due to draconian punishments but people with money and power can get away with just about anything.

Rapists usually walk free, and the woman is killed for dishonoring her family. Is this justice? Does this prevent rape?

Some Saudis believe that women are inherently evil, that they are born that way and need ‘firm discipline’ to beat the evil out of them and make them behave. I think this judge is one of those.

90 lashes with a juraid stick for a 13 year old girl is excessive when a lesser number of strokes is prescribed to men for assault.

The Singaporean rattan cane is not a mild punishment. The strokes are on bare flesh and usually cut the skin. The locals will tell you that you really don’t want to do anything that would result in caning. This kid thought he could get away with it because he was American. The ironic thing is, he had a partner in his crime who did get away with it because his dad was a diplomat.
When charges of rape will inevitably lead to punishment for adultery against the woman, and shame and dishonor upon the family, nobody is going to report a rape.
And nobody does. This is what passes for low crime and high morality.

There was the case of the Bangladeshi girl who was raped, was quickly married off, and the whole thing blew up in her face when it was found out she was already seven months pregnant after being married only a month.

Her rapist goes unpunished. She will suffer the lash, and her family must pay a fine or be cut off completely from their society.

These are a barbaric people without the sense of right and wrong that they were born with. Not all religons are the same of course, and there are still those that perpetuate the mores of ancient pagan tribal customs such as these.

Nobody in there right mind comes to the defense of such actions.

Thank you… I don’t really know why they omitted the head injury part in the story. Some news sites even deliberately put an image of a public flogging , which is completely unrelated to the story…only to exaggerate the case.

again, the lashes will be carried out in the classroom, usually with a wooden ruler on the palm of hand.

Correction:

I just read a report in that came from the ministry of Justice and here is the main points:

*The student is in her **twenties **(born in 1989) and therefore the court dealt with her as an adult and not as a minor.

*the main reason behind the case is that the student made death threats to the school’s director and then entered her office and attacked her physically. the director was then hospitalized for 5 days.
