He can pray for the person, the archbishop said, but asking your priest to be present and condone a grave sin that is in direct contradiction to our Catholic values is not fair to the pastor. The rite contains the forgiveness of sin as part of the rite, he said too. We cannot forgive preemptively when we ask for suicide when it is a grave sin. If the priest goes to such a person he should try to talk him out of it, like a person rushing to talk a person from jumping off a bridge, the archbishop said too.

We really need to pray for our priests. The situations they get put into these days just boggles the mind. 😦

It is sad that these types of rules need to even be stated. The culture of death is an evil thing.

And of course, I can predict the onslaught against this Archbishop and the priests any time soon now, about how “evil” they are for denying a dying person’s last wish. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on the comments on the site (at the article).

One of my parents never received “Last Rites” because the priest said he would come the next morning but my parent passed by natural causes the afternoon before. So what is the alternative? Just to hope and pray the deceased, whether dying by natural causes or with assistance, repents before drawing his or her last breath and that God knows his or her heart?
