Law being considered in Ohio House would ban abortions based on Down syndrome diagnosis

Any abortion ban is a good ban! However, its weird when murdering a baby is banned because of “discrimination”. Thank you, I’ll accept your ban (its better than zip).:whacky:

Until Roe v Wade is overturned, this is only a symbolic gesture. Not that I’m against symbolic gestures in principle, but I’d like to see some direct action once in a while.

If you can get just a half a loaf of bread instead of the full loaf, that’s much better than nothing.

Compare that to abortion havens states, for as liberal as the Netherlands may be from what we hear, it is amazing their abortion rate is much lower than some states in the US, in fact, probably lower than at least half of the US states. so yes, for me, abortion rates matter.

If I recall correctly, they are big on sterilization. They get their one or two kids (assuming they even want kids) then get sterilized. Lower pregnancy rates would obviously bring down abortion rates.

I doubt there’s less promiscuity in the Netherlands than in the US. But the Dutch have better sex education and availability of contraceptives. As for banning abortion based on a diagnosis of Down Syndrome, forcing parents to accept the birth of a seriously deformed child is a really bad idea, both on grounds of eugenics and just plain common sense. This is the sort of thing that gives the pro-life movement a bad name. This is a classic case of where only the parents and their physician should be the shot-callers.

How could a civilized society do anything less than require that parents not kill their less-than-perfect children? (I think parents ought not kill any of their children, but I suppose that might also be a stretch for you?)

Children who have Down Syndrome are often joyful, innocent, incredibly loving individuals. To argue that we ought to allow parents to kill these children simply because of their diagnosis is elitist and evil.

Are you serious?You say this as a Catholic? This is sad and pathetic on so many levels.
One just going off of your premise that DS children are seriously deformed is absurd on it’s own.To say that this would be a personal and ok decision for a parent to make,if their child has a disability of any kind is a dad statement indeed!😦
 
Well I’ll take any positive step I can find. I hope it passes and is held up as constitutional during the inevitable challenge. I’m not holding my breath though. I’m not sure we will ever get rid of the invented “privacy” excuse.

I think the eugenic position would be in favor of aborting a child just because he or she has Down’s Syndrome.

If there were tests to allow for the abortion of children carrying a “gay gene” (if such exists), and parents could elect to abort that child because they didn’t want to have a gay child, the left would suddenly develop a newfound respect for the Pro-Life movement in that particular case and would draft legislation against aborting a child just because they were likely to be homosexual. Why should people with Down’s Syndrome not be considered a protected class?
 
The marble- heads want the “right to choose” just like the Islamic terrorists! They want to continue “identifying” what they roll around in their head as wisdom of their choice!

If they are not stopped, the next thing will be - we gave you a “test” and our results dictated that you will not receive, nor be allowed to receive in the future, any benefit of taxes paid; and you will need to pay an increase in taxes, equal to a multiple of 10 times the amount of the highest paid tax, that possible future tax payers might possibly pay. You did not choose the correct choice! We know what is best.

You speak for the parents, I’ll continue to speak for the child whom you are advocating eliminating through the use of common sense. Forcing parents to give birth to a child with serious deformity is a bad idea? How bad is the idea that the child should die so the parents don’t have to care for a creation of God?

We sure have shifted reality…😦
 
Aren’t there already laws in place that protect the disabled from discrimination? Those laws ought to protect unborn children as well, but it seems that a separate law must spell it out.

Agreed. We can not let the perfect be the enemy of the possible. BTW I am sure you will see almost unanimous opposition to this bill by Democrats just I am sure when election time rolls around I am sure Catholic Democrats will say there is really no difference between the Partys on abortion
 
Pay attention to Ohio’s Heartbeat Bill. It was passed by the Ohio House in March, but has not been brought up in the Senate and Governor Kasich has not said if it is passed if he will sign it.

Frankly, while this is nice, the Heartbeat bill is the one to watch to see if this state’s Republicans are strongly pro-life.
