LCMS Lutheran parish a little too "high church"?

Thanks so much for the info. I had not asked about that in our Parish and have only been attending an Episcopal Church for a little over a year. I was recently Confirmed.

My childhood Lutheran Church had a tall pulpit on the left side of the Church. People would sit in the pew up to the second or third pew from the front on the right side (Our families pew was the 4th down on the right side ). However NO one sat in the first 6-8 pews on the left. Especially, if the readings were stern ones and it looked like the sermon would be a stern one. Our Pastor would lean forward and look like he was almost going to launch out of the pulpit sometime when he was making a particularly important point. I think people thought maybe he was going to fall out onto them or something.

What diocese are you in, GCMac? Is it a conservative Episcopal parish?

Yes, that’s what I’m talking about. The red glass is the “shade” and the candle goes inside the shade; the candle is then replaced at the end of it’s burn-life (every 7 to 14 days depending on the candle’s specifications). Most sanctuary candles that I’ve seen (in both Anglican and Catholic parishes) are done this way, but there are some out there that use an electric “candle” or an oil lamp.

At my parish, we also have a lamp (same basic style as a sanctuary lamp) with a blue shade that sits next to the statue of Our Lady of Grace.

Gurney, I live in the Diocese of Springfield (IL) and my parish is rather Anglo-Catholic and theologically conservative; I’ve also been told that there are Episcopalians who live in/near my town and opt to drive an hour or so every week to go to the Diocese of Missouri or the Diocese of Kentucky to parishes that are more “liberal” (although I’m not sure how “liberal” those parishes are or if they may simply seem that way because they tend to be more “low church”).

I haven’t been to many of the other parishes in my Diocese but I know they tend toward Anglo-Catholicism, and judging from Bishop Beckwith (recently retired) and Bishop Martins, I would say that the Diocese as a whole is more conservative than most (at-least the clergy tend to be based upon Bishop Martin’s election vote totals).

I’m in the Diocese of San Joaquin, under Bishop Schofield, that broke off from TEC in 2007and joined ACNA. It’s pretty conservative and thankfully still doesn’t permit women’s ordination…

We have a Sanctuary Lamp, and it is hung near the entrance where the place where the Reserved Sacrament is kept. We use the common cup and individual glasses, the pastors are trying to encourage members to use the common cup. When the glasses and common cup are cleaned, the water is poured out on the grass or into the baptismal fount which drains into the earth. Any unused concentrated wine in the glasses is poured into a crystal decanter and the Host is placed into Pyrex.
