With your actions in regards to this forum I find it sad you could muster the strength to mention TRUTH and spew it out of your lying mouth.

You sir/madam have only established yourself as a liar, two faced fraud. This is the only response you are worth of.
Good Day to you.
So your issue with me is I dared to question the great Catholicism? Who are Martin Luther? The other Protestant reformers?

You sir/madam have a issue when someone questions Catholicism, how dare they do such a thing.

In light of things said here, I gain further knowledge as to why Martin Luther and the other Protestant reformers did what they did.

Again this is why I left Catholicism. Doctrinally I and Catholicism were not on the same page.

I thought you said you were Catholic?
Hard to say he keeps changing his mind, or making stuff up, or lying.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I would concur with the person who started this thread that anyone wishing to know about the beliefs of my church should go to the link, mormon.org

For those who are interested in a replies from people such as myself regarding things in you view have not been answered honestly by members, I would recommend you sending your request of reply from me in private messages only.

I do not have part of argruments here or anywhere else about the church.

I am a former Mormon living in the metro Phoenix area preparing to return to Seattle area as soon as possible due to my work. I have always been a Catholic, fortunately I am grateful for this site and outside resources available for those folks like me who wish to strengthen their faith in the church and remain active.

Whether it is Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses or whatever church trying to convert us will always work to do that, I know this is my home regarding my faith always.

As a Latter Day Saint, or most know me and my church in general, the Mormons, I will not have part of this because I believe there is truth found in general a host of events, a person’s life experience, gifted and talented, which I submit, we all have a gift and talent to share.

Truth is truth and I recognize that my views are confusing and/or used to continue a agenda that is contrary to the God and Jesus Christ. I will defend anyone who believes in God and Jesus whether they agree me or not. The Holy Ghost reveals truth – the devil continues to be the great deceiver.

You haven’t questioned Catholocism, you have made your unsubstantiated, unfounded, unresearched pronouncements of what you think the Catholic church is.

In light of what things said here? Give us a quote. Give us a link. Remember, you had a thread shut down for not providing references for outrageous claims.

Your statement about you and Catholicism being on different pages is obviously an understatement. You can’t be on the same page, if you haven’t opened the book.

Early on in these forums, you said to come to you, ask questions about the mormon church. You also said you wouldn’t deal with recycled “hopwash” (hogwash). You realized that works both ways right.

You left the Catholic Church. (assuming you were ever Catholic) because you refused to put forth any effort into educating yourself. Instead you are relying on your “testimony”, or warm feeling from what you get with the BoM. Whatever works for you.

I guess just for clarification (and now I can’t remember if it was on this thread or elsewhere), do Catholics believe prophets exist now? If so, is this through the clergy and/or Pope?

I’m pretty sure I’ve ask an LDS whether it was possible for a layman prophet to exist and as recall, the answer was there is one prophet.

As far as a position of Prophet goes, Jesus Christ is our Prophet, Priest and King. We do believe and acknowledge the gift of prophecy that is given to individuals by the Holy Spirit. We don’t believe this gift is given to people based on their position. This gift has been given to men, women, laity and clergy.

Lying, probably not. If you want we can ferret this out. What is my status as a Christian?
the same as mine, I suppose…if you believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ and call yourself one.
Oh, nevermind. My status has no bearing, it’s nothing but a red herring. (I’ve always loved that one.)
Actually, I think it is quite pertinent, since it goes to your definition of the word. 😉
If you did not also believe in the teachings from the Book of Mormon. If you are willing to distance yourself from that Book, I’ll agree you are a Christian.
You don’t get to decide that I’m not a Christian, m’friend. It’s not your call.
I don’t know how to respond. How about: they are out there.
Care to point a few out? Given that the classification of “Christian” is about putting Christ as the basis of one’s religion, and identifying oneself as a Christian, I think that might be a problem. After all, Muslims and Jews also believe that Christ lived…and I understand that Muslims may even accept the virgin birth and His status as the Jewish Messiah. However, they do not identify themselves as Christian, because THEY emphasize other teachings over those of Christ, and SAY they do.
Err… again. I think you would do better to just not try to throw around fallacies. Composition is closer to “fallacy claim” you are trying to make, but you fail to recognize that this fallacy requires the absence of a warrant. The warrant exists therefore the fallacy does not.
Upon what basis do you claim that the warrent exists? I think that it is pretty obvious that you are begging the question.
Maybe we are reading and responding to different posts. I never qualify myself as a Catholic or a Baptist or anything other than “protestant” and Christian.

I am not going to point out the error of your ways. It is not my place. It is not my purpose. I’m not going to get entangled by these snares. We were having a conversation about something worth discussing, lets stay the course.

But you are Mormon because you have “another Testament.”

LOL. Drop a non sequitur? Not really, but if you need me to connect the dots, I will. You stated:

You don’t agree with much of my theology. I’m pretty sure I have yet to discuss any of my theology other than to acknowledge that I do not believe in the Catholic Theology. With one broad stroke, you disassociated yourself with my theology without knowing what I believe. I responded. I believe the Bible. Quid pro quo, you must not. The so called non sequitur was the response in brief to what was actually your fallacy (which again, I did not want to point out).

The irony coming full circle is that I answered your non sequitur with what you viewed as a non sequitur which really answered yours while trying to not point out your fallacy. Alas this brought us to this discussion about fallacies again, which I said I really didn’t want to discuss, because it diminishes our main focus. So in a way you won because I had to address it now and then and probably yet again when you respond. I have been entangled.

I will again go on the record, I would rather discuss the topic than the argumentation.
Well, if we are talking about circularity, you could address that bit about the warrent…

WOW! so this is why we cannot get a straight answere out of this guy on the threads he has posted. we are trying to debate him on the josheph smith restoration thread and cannot get any concrete answeres from him. i also sent someone to talk to diana, since she knows what shes talking about, and is not afraid of controversy. thank you zaff. for this post. its an eye opener. God bless you and yours.🙂

I can’t make your eyes open. You seem to dig yourself further and further into blindness. Only God can help you now.

I have explained differences. You can’t see them. 🤷
The doctrine (dogma?) of papal infallibility says precisely that, Rebecca. The difference between "God will NOT ALLOW a Pope to go astray when he speaks ex cathedra an on matters of faith and morals’ and ‘the word of God’ is no difference at all.
Yes, I agree. However, we are speaking about a bull that is not infallible. So your point?
My point is that you cannot claim that we MUST accept every quote and word uttered by our leaders as prophecy and the word of God, when we have equally strict requirements for judging the level of prophecy from OUR leaders as you do for infallibility from a Pope. You are telling me that we cannot use policies and quotes from Popes when they are not speaking infallibly—and by the same token, you cannot use policies and quotes from LDS leaders that are not canonized into scripture.

Sorry, but if we can’t—you can’t…but if you insist upon claiming that every racist quote from one of our leaders proves that we all MUST follow it, and are therefore false, then you have to agree that policies and statements from fallible Popes and leaders may be used against you for the same reason.

In the meantime, those fallible bulls caused untold misery, death and hundreds of years of discrimination, bigotry, slavery and human horror. No quote or action of any LDS leader came close to the most minor instruction from a Pope—like the one that instructed the Portuguese to conquer and enslave the inhabitants of the Americas.
This is a new definition, one that is not backed up by what your church teaches, now, and certainly not 150 years ago. We’ve had this discussion before. You ignore what your own church teaches. I guess I do need to dig it up again for you.
We HAVE had this conversation before. You come up with quotes out of context, I provide the context and prove you wrong…some time goes by and you come back with the same claim as if I had never responded to you.
No, they cannot, but neither do I need to pay attention to a papal letter that is not addressed to the entire Church. The Pope communicates with many people. If he says to someone in a Papal bull go to Africa, do I pack up and go to Africa?
So…as long as he isn’t telling you personally to invade South America and enslave all the natives there, or offering to remit all your sins if you go enslave Africans, then you have no problem with him telling other people this? That’s an interesting viewpoint.
Yes Diana, and we know when a Pope is speaking infallibly because we are informed he is. You have to guess at when your prophet is speaking as a prophet. Again, you have not addressed, mormons believed Young and Snow were speaking as prophets, why don’t you?
Uhmn…what part of; his words have to be cannonized…seems to have escaped your attention? Anything less than that does not reach the level of doctrine.
Are you projecting your beliefs onto Catholicism?
No…I think it is projection on your part. You are projecting the worst of your own history upon us, in the hopes that you can deny yours.
How about you drop the condescending tone and act like an adult?
Of course. Sorry for the ‘sweetie.’ The rest of the statement stands, however.

dianaiad:
He is when he claims infallibility…it’s the duck principle. You know, 'walk like a duck, quack like a duck…" When a Pope claims that he is speaking ex cathedra and is infallible, that’s pretty du…prophet like.

You are wiggling. The ONLY way that a Pope can be infallible, that is, that GOD WILL NOT ALLOW HIM TO GO ASTRAY, is if God is specifically interfering with what is BEING said. And that, m’friend, is called "revelation,’ and that makes the Pope a prophet by definition.

The Immaculate Conception? That was sorta doctrine before young Bernadette had her encounter at Lourdes, but nobody HAD to believe it. However, once Pope Pius IX got through with it, it was no longer “hey, it’s a nice idea but you don’t have to believe it…” and became dogma–which I understand is a ‘do or leave’ sort of proposition.

So…a Pope can’t proclaim new doctrine, just…new DOGMA?

The difference is that the anti’s want to portray our view of our leaders as being infallible and impeccable in order to criticize us, even as they get all bent out of shape because non-Catholics are confused about the doctrine of Papal infallibility, claiming that it is something that it is not.

It’s all of a piece, though; It MUST be different, because, well…you say so.

But…it’s not.
Yep, that’s the rest of the statement that stands, all right.

What is the meaning of statues of the Angel Moroni blowing a horn that is depicted on top of Mormon temples? Does this mean that Mormons agree with Catholics that the graven image part of the ten commandments has to do with not worshiping false gods and not a prohibition on artwork? Do Mormons buy into the typical baptist refrain and accuse Catholics of “worshiping graven images”? Or Mary Mother of God for that matter? Do Mormons find themselves under attack under the graven image misunderstanding of our really seperated bretheren? Are there more such statutes of personages inside the temples or, I think you call them stake houses?

This validates further what I have said about what you folks supposedly know about what my church believes. The temple is the house of the Lord used to perform sacred ordinances for the living and the dead. It is not a “stake house” you call it. Stake centers, the correct term, as well all of our churches are open to visitors.

No statues in the temples.

Wow, “you folks”, I would not have asked if I knew the answer. I still dont know the answer and its an honest question out of curiousity.

I am speaking about those who continue to open the recycled garbage dumpster and spread the garbage about what my church supposedly believes, according to them. That is the “you folks”.

What is the meaning of statues of the Angel Moroni blowing a horn that is depicted on top of Mormon temples?
Good question! We believe that Moroni is the angel who delivered the Book of Mormon into Joseph Smith’s hands. He was a soldier (a general) and a prophet, and his appearance heralded the coming of this new “dispensation;” thus the heraldic horn. I rather doubt that the real Moroni ever blew a horn…he was more familiar with the sword and the stylus. The symbolism is, then, a little obvious. 😉 If you visit the visitor’s center on the Temple grounds, you are far more likely to see a life sized reproduction of the Christus statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Does this mean that Mormons agree with Catholics that the graven image part of the ten commandments has to do with not worshiping false gods and not a prohibition on artwork?
uhmnn…I guess it does. Mormons haven’t been around long enough to contribute to the world of art to anywhere near the extent that Catholics have historically done, but we do enjoy it and use art.
Do Mormons buy into the typical baptist refrain and accuse Catholics of “worshiping graven images”?
Some do. Being Mormon doesn’t insulate people against misunderstanding others. Those who know better don’t. I understand the difference between worshiping a statue and the deep symbology Catholics use.
Or Mary Mother of God for that matter? Do Mormons find themselves under attack under the graven image misunderstanding of our really seperated bretheren?
Actually…quite the opposite. We are far more likely to be criticized because we don’t have crosses in our churches or homes–though we DO have portraits of Jesus Christ all over the place.
Are there more such statutes of personages inside the temples or, I think you call them stake houses?
Statues? Well, no, not so much. Paintings and prints, yes…but not statues or altars where we can place candles, etc. We are more likely to have such statues in our homes, but not in shrines or shrine-like displays.

Oh, we do have stake houses (OK, 'stake centers" I got corrected…) --those are larger versions of the regular meeting houses (churches.) Where a regular meeting house might serve one or two congregations, a ‘stake’ house can serve two or three, and that is where up to 9 or 10 congregations will gather for semi-annual 'stake conferences,"

I didn’t see that he was confusing the Temple with a stake house (or stake center…be nice.) .and I personally appreciate that he asked questions and didn’t do any assuming. It’s refreshing.

Answer to ParkerD: Part 1of 3
You claim, “die means they have not taken the message of Christ to heart, which would have brought themselves a newness of life.” Are you claiming that the false prophets were not literally put to death in the OT times?
I think more often than not the answer is no. Some died by, evidently, God causing their death, such as you will read in Jeremiah 28 about Hananiah.
4–God penalizes “false prophets”. Mormons leave that to God, although if there is a wolf among the sheep the wolf may be excommunicated to protect the sheep.
6–**God would take in death a modern prophet if that were ever to be a possibility, before the “leading astray” could happen. **But that doesn’t mean there aren’t false teachers around who will go on leading as many people astray as they can. We certainly don’t need to “fear” or give any heed to false, self-serving teachers or religious leaders in the world.
Why was Brigham Young allowed to proclaim that God revealed to him that Adam is God; and to maintain that claim throughout his years as LDS President and Prophet? Why didn’t God “take him in death” as you said would be done, before the “leading astray” could happen?
Then you refer to Revelation and suggest that all who have the Spirit of Christ are prophets. Really, Parker, all who have the spirit of Christ are prophets?
“the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” That is quite explicit. It means that one who has the testimony of Jesus will have the spirit of prophecy.
The gift of prophecy has not been given to all.
Indeed–to have the testimony of Jesus requires faith, and in proportion to one’s faith one will either have or not have the testimony of Jesus which is the spirit of prophecy.
Could you clarify? Are you saying, lacking the gift of prophecy, it due to lack of faith?

The N.T. tells us, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good”; “empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills”; “we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

1 Corinthians 12:
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Romans 12:

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the **measure of faith that God has assigned. **

4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 **so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. **

6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Yes, all those gifts of the Spirit are very important, and recognizable in the true gospel of Jesus Christ. I’ve seen all of them in operation except the interpretation of tongues which I have read about but not seen in person.
The idea of the Mormon Prophets receiving “revelations” from God is at the heart of nearly every issue in the discussion regarding the changing and contradicting beliefs within Mormonism.
Yes–frustrating, I see. Here Moses was commanded to destroy people and plunder their possessions, and Joshua brought it about, and then other prophets had different messages from God that were more peaceful. Is it not clear that God gives messages based on what is needed for the time and place?
I will address this in part 2–next post.
I am asking these questions, so that the LDS can set the record straight regarding the definition, role, and responsibility of your Prophets.
Their responsibility is to bring people to Christ and toward building the latter-day Zion promised in Isaiah.
Previously, you described the Mormon Prophets as “seers and revelators.” Is there a reason for omitting this in your definition of the role of your prophets?

. . Just as Jesus told the Jews to listen to Him and not be so adamant about heeding Moses or having Abraham as their father (prophet). . .
I would urge you to review Scripture again. Many did not understand the identity of Christ. Jesus did not malign Abraham or Moses, but cautioned the Jews about their presumptions regarding them, and their lack of knowledge of Scripture.

Matthew 3 (ESV):
9And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

**Mark Chapter 12: **24 Jesus said to them, "Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? . . 26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?

Jesus revealed his eternal nature, in saying, “before Abraham was, I am.”
**
John Chapter 8:** 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad." 57So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

The N.T. quotes O.T. Prophets in multiple passages. Moses and Abraham are referred to often, but not as inconsequential dead prophets.

Luke Chapter 24 (ESV): 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Remember, Christ fulfilled the law and the prophets, according to Holy Scripture:

Matthew Chapter 5: ** 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. **

18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

We cannot ignore the prophets of the past, and we cannot ignore the teachings of Christ. The LDS Church disregards Christian tradition, and rewrote Christian history.

Answer to ParkerD: Part 3 of 3
  1. If a Mormon Prophet claims a revelation from God, does that revelation become Mormon Doctrine? If not, please explain.
1–Not if it wasn’t the unanimous voice of the prophet and the twelve apostles, except in the case of Joseph Smith who had the unique calling of being the foundation prophet for establishing the doctrines so the church could be restored and the foundational doctrines be revealed to clarify from all the wrong information of the past.
If an LDS Prophet claims a revelation from God, and the twelve apostles vote against his revelation, then that would make him a false prophet–unless the twelve apostles are wrong. Claiming a revelation from God, that is not a true revelation—is bearing false witness against God, Himself. So, why would such a “prophet” be allowed to continue in his role of Church President and Prophet?

Again, there is no way to escape the fact that Brigham Young claimed that God revealed to him that Adam is god. A “Prophet” claiming revelation from God, is acting as a prophet. This is true throughout Biblical history.
  1. What is the Mormon definition of a true Prophet of God?
2–“A prophet is only a prophet when he is acting as such.” --Joseph Smith

. . .“The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”–John

. . .“This generation shall have my word through you.” meaning through Joseph Smith
Could you give me the source for “This generation shall have my word through you,” that you claim applies to Joseph Smith.
  1. What is the Mormon definition of a false Prophet?
3–A false prophet would be a teacher or leader who leads people away from following Jesus Christ and from getting the involvement of the Holy Spirit in their own personal lives so that they could change for the better. Often, they will lead by trying to have feigned spirituality and will be able to be detected by the fruits of their teachings and the fruits of the people who follow them.
  1. What is the Mormon penalty for false Prophets?
4–God penalizes “false prophets”. Mormons leave that to God, although if there is a wolf among the sheep the wolf may be excommunicated to protect the sheep.
  1. Do you believe any Mormon Presidents/Prophets, at any point in history, were false prophets? If yes, which Prophets?
5–Not when they were speaking or writing as a prophet, no. But they could bring their own opinions forward, and God would not stop that by some magical or forced process, unless the result was going to be “leading the people astray,” in which case that prophet would have been taken by death before the “leading astray” could happen. God really does know all things.
  1. Do Mormons accept the Biblical standard of a true Prophet of God, as defined in Deuteronomy, quoted below? (I am not advocating the execution of anyone.)
6–God would take in death a modern prophet if that were ever to be a possibility, before the “leading astray” could happen. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t false teachers around who will go on leading as many people astray as they can. We certainly don’t need to “fear” or give any heed to false, self-serving teachers or religious leaders in the world.
Again, why was Brigham Young allowed to proclaim that Adam is God; and to maintain that claim throughout his years as LDS President and Prophet? Why didn’t God “take him in death” as you said would be done, before the “leading astray” could happen?

Again, why was the Priesthood Ban of African Americans allowed; when it opposed the freedom and equality established in Christ–and the Priesthood of Believers–as revealed in early Christianity/N.T.? The N.T. writers did not allow the day, in which they lived, to prevent them from proclaiming the freedom, priesthood, and salvation in Christ.

ParkerD, I appreciate your taking the time to answer these questions.

However, nothing you have said justifies the “revelations” of your early prophets, especially the Adam/god “revelation,” and the Priesthood Ban for African Americans.

If a Mormon Prophet claims a revelation from God, how can you possibly claim he is not acting as a Prophet?

Anna
