There are many things that are not written in the Bible verbatim as you are requesting. There are also many things that are not contained within the Bible at all, that were yet pure truths.
The Bible does not define the canon and it does not tell us which books belong in teh canon. Today many christian churches have different book counts in their canon.
There are at least 14 books the Bible references to that we do not have.
Just to name a few:
“Book of the Covenant” (Sounds important)
“Book of the Wars of the Lord”(Who knows what important things this may have taught)
“Sayings of the Seers”
4 missing epistles of Paul
This is why I believe one cannot claim that “the Bible is complete, and without error, and that if it cannot be found in the Bible that it is not true” There is simply too much missing from the Bible to make such claims.
I understand and respect that the Catholics believe that these “missing books” are not inspired, and thus were not included in the canon of scripture, However I disagree. If you would like to know why, I can show you in the Bible (as it seems to be where many are most satisfied hearing things from)
Well, just to be perfectly clear. I’d like to lay this out from the beginning.
- Joseph Smith translated “another Testament.”
- That testament says you will “become God.”
- No part of the Bible says you will “become God.”
- You validate the other “testament” by saying there are parts of the Bible are missing?
I am going to start with 4, first. You cannot say, we accept the Bible as the Word of God, but in the same breath say, God left out some books. You either say, you accept the Bible to be the Word of God or not. That you must decide for yourself.
I think the problem with 1,2,& 3 is what Jesus states about testimony in John 5:31-40 :
[31] If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. [32] There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. [33] Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. [34] But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. [35] He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. [36] But I have greater witness than [that] of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. [37] And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. [38] And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. [39] Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. [40] And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
Jesus provides two witnesses: John the Baptist and God. But Jesus says, John’s witness is not enough (although they already acknowledged that John was a prophet), you must have God’s testimony. Jesus uses only the Old Testament. Remember, the New Testament cannot self authenticate itself, it must be have a witness in the Old Testament. Because of this testimony, we all acknowledge the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, now. Even the Mormons accept the Bible to be the word of God, (so long as it is translated correctly). The Bible does not testify to “becoming God” but you still accept the “testament” and are then expected to testify to Joseph Smith being a prophet of God?
The only problem with Joseph Smith’s “other Testament” is he is missing one witness, God. I would hope that you would see, that something so monumental as “becoming God” should have God as a witness.
The other thing you have to understand you still have an opportunity for a perfect testimony. Until you draw your last breath, you can read and ponder these things. You can search the Bible looking for God’s witness to the things that you now testify. If you cannot find them in the Bible, you can do one simple thing: fall back on what you already know and trust, the Bible. You can shed the testimony of Joseph Smith and know that you are forgiven. You can know that you are saved.
