The one that’s been bothering me lately is “Transfigure Us O Lord” – not the lyrics, but the music – it’s written in 2/4 time and has this relentless 1-2-1-2 beat, along with a sort of nursery rhyme-ish sing-song quality. It easily becomes an earworm, too, which doesn’t help.

On the other hand, I love “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling”, which we sang today.

(Don’t tell anyone, but I also love singing “Shall We Gather At The River”, but I’m pretty sure we won’t be singing that one for Lent.)

Psst – I love Gospel Music. The Martins do a medley of Promised Land, Shall We Gather and Down by the Riverside that’s so good, you’d have to be dead not to feel moved by it. That kind of music is just plain fun to sing. I’ve been going to Gaither Homecomings for several years, and sing and cry my way through the whole 4 hour show.

The implication seems to be that the grace took hold once and for all “the hour I first believed.” Also, I’ve read that the reference to “the hour I first believed” was de-emphasizing baptism, suggesting that grace comes through faith alone rather than the sacraments. Honestly, though, I don’t think most Catholics who sing the song have that in mind.
The talk of Grace as prime mover is I believe overblown. The song seems to imply that Grace was always present, the narrator however only realized it when he had his conversion (“the hour I first believed”).

Have to agree with you there brother Irish :bigyikes:
“How can I keep from Singing” is one of my favorites. I’ve only cried tears of joy at masses, singing songs of praise that make me realize how blessed we, as a community, are to have God in our lives.

Also, many people dislike the “saved a wretch like me” line of “Amazing Grace”. . .well, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are that pathetic, nor does it mean that we were saved at one point, unsaved another, ect. My opinion is that it means, again, the narrator marvels at the wondrous mercy of the Lord at having saved us beings that could very well in comparison to Him be wretches through His Grace.
