Least Favorite Songs at Mass

I cannot stand “Let There Be Peace on Earth”. Ridiculous. It’s a pop song! I’m pretty sure there isn’t even a mention of a deity in the lyrics.

Also (ducks and covers because so many people love this one), “On Eagles’ Wings.” Can’t stand it. Have already submitted a request to the music director that if I pass away before he does, NOT to play this at the funeral. He agreed rather quickly.

And I don’t know if it’s because I have bad memories from grade school May crownings, but “Immaculate Mary” grates on my nerves. “Hail Holy Queen” and “Ave Maria” get the job done just as well and much more gracefully, IMO.

Someone else mentioned Palestrina and a wish to sing his work at every Mass. I wholeheartedly agree. The music is transcendent. Otherwise, my favorite “common” hymn is “O Come O Come Emmanuel”. It’s so simple and beautiful, and full of hope.
Let there be peace on earth: How about “With God as our Father, brothers all are we…” Sounds like a deity to me.

This was my mother’s favorite song. It’s in the hymnal and we used it as the recessional for her funeral.

Lord of the Dance is definitely one song I utterly dislike. I know what the composer is trying to say, but the application of the words to Jesus just conjures up in me a feeling of repulsion.

BTW, one of the most hilarious songs, I think, is the song And They Know We Are Christians. This is the typical song that likes to pat ourselves on the back.

And it is this song that comes to mind each time when after church, as the family car winds its way to the exit of the parking lot, someone cuts us off or pretends not to see us waiting for our turn, and blithely takes the right of way. I don’t get angry. I just find it very comical, because that’s when I think of the song And they know we are Christians by our Love, by our Love, and they know we are Christians by our Love.":rotfl: I even hum it sometimes or sing it out loud. I tell, you, it can be a jungle out there on that church’s parking lot!

Someone cited “On Eagles’ Wings.” Even David Haas said about that song, “Michael Joncas just wanted a song that began ‘Yoo-hoo.’” 🙂

I got the “dollop of Daisy” sour cream advert song in my head one time, and it was DAYS before it went away!!! :eek: I actually sat down and wrote the company to tell them it was such a good jingle, but I still didn’t like their sour cream. They sent me three coupons for free sour cream. 😛

Oh well. At least they have since changed their jingle!

Now don’t anyone tell me there is a hymn to the tune of the “dollop of Daisy” song!!!

Awwww - come on! It’s not THAT bad is it? hehehee :rolleyes:

~Liza
Yes, my granddaughter could sing along, “And I’ll meet you all at the dance, Sara Lee.”:eek: 😉

On the other hand, the site fromwhich it came offers some decent hymns, for MIDI anyway.

My parish has started “fasting” from music for Lent. :rolleyes: So, instead of singing, someone plays a BONGO during the processional and recessional. People were laughing openly at this during the Ash Wednesday masses. Hopefully, it’ll change before this Sunday. Something that won’t be changed is the fact that the choir likes to chant things that aren’t meant to be chanted… like “Eat this bread, drink this cup, come to me and never be hungry… etc” over and over and over again during the offertory and communion in Lent. Last year, I went to another parish for Sunday mass because I couldn’t stand it- too distracting. I’m asking for more strength this year.

So, my least favorite song at mass is a bongo accompaniment to the entrance procession.
This actually sounds scary! I feel for you.

Okay, you’ve got me there. It’s not totally secular.

I still can’t stand it, and dread when it appears on the hymn schedule to coincide with my Mass dates on the cantor schedule. I’m glad that some people like it. I’m not one of them.

Did I mention how much I hate “I Say Yes, Lord”? Our pastor and youth minister both like this song, and occasionally override the good judgement of our music director to get this song on the hymn schedule. Where of course it invariably coincides with my dates on the cantor schedule. Gah. If I’ve already ranted about this hymn, I apologize, but my hatred of this hymn has no limits. It is truly one of the worst things I’ve ever had to sing or listen to.

Why, WHY can’t we sing “Holy God We Praise Thy Name”, or “Holy Holy Holy”, or “Now Thank We All Our God”, or “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” more often? Everyone sings along to those! They’re great! Singable melodies, non-heretical lyrics, very familiar to most. Why not?

Remember the song, “Onward Christian Soliders?” I remember singing this when I was in grade school, only to be told by my older sister that we weren’t supposed to be singing it. I guess when she was in school, it was considered a Protestant song. I don’t remember the lyrics, but was wondering if anyone else heard about this. I know I haven’t heard it sung in church in years. TIA!
I was raised Protestant and sang this song many many times, its always been one of my favorites.

Here are the lyrics, looking at it now it seems more Catholic than anything else.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain:
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!

Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never ’gainst that church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail.
Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.

My least favorite, right now, is “Shall We Gather at the River”. It just doesn’t seem like it should be sung in the church. Just my opinion

Some of the bad old church songs I am glad have disappeared into oblivion:

Sons of God
Here We Are
Allelu
Go Tell Everyone

(hey, aren’t those all by Ray Repp?)

Also I really dislike *Gather Us In * because it sounds almost exactly like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald!

And as for favorite hymns…

My absolute **favorite ** hymn is Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. I am a classical guitarist, and this song is simply breathtaking when played on classical guitar:

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
and with fear and trembling stand;
ponder nothing earthly minded,
for with blessing in his hand
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
as of old on earth he stood,
Lord of lords in human vesture,
in the Body and the Blood
he will give to all the faithful
his own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
spreads its vanguard on the way,
as the Light of Light descendeth
from the realms of endless day,
that the powers of hell may vanish
as the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph;
cherubim with sleepless eye,
veil their faces to the Presence,
as with ceaseless voice they cry,
“Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, Lord Most High!”

I am a sub at my parish and several others in the Archdiocese of Detroit and when I select the music I always choose at least two old hymns – we need to make sure they are not lost!

👍 . **AMEN! ** At the very beginning of this thread in '04, Thann was doing more than just expressing a personal opinion. Thann could intuitively tell which music is reverent and appropriate to the Mass and which music is not.

See a recent article on Church music written by Bishop Morlino ( madisoncatholicherald.org/2006-10-26/bishop.html ), and a National Catholic Register article about how our U.S. Bishops are planning to return to the more appropriate and reverent music that is essential to the Mass ([ncregister.com/site/article/1480 - ](http://ncregister.com/site/article/1480 - ) **Bishops Insist Hymns Follow Doctrine **- The bishops of America want to improve the quality of hymns sung in church.).

Mass music should be determined not by our tastes and votes, but by what is deemed reverent and appropriate by our apostles, the Bishops. When they eventually come out with their recommendations, we should all listen to the Bishops.

“Let All Mortal Flesh” is really awesome and reverent and appropriate to the Mass.
Then, AFTER MASS we can have our fun and play all our favorite beautiful contemporary Catholic music, at social functions, to our heart’s content!
We have wonderful stores of great Catholic music that we can enjoy outside of the Mass. What a great way to carry our faith into everyday life!

BTW, have you ever heard “Let All Mortal Flesh” jazzed up for AFTER MASS listening? (Oremus does this-- free download at oremusmusic.net/music.php.) It’s beautiful both ways, but only one way is appropriate for the Mass.

We reserve special reverent music for graduations, inaugurations and coronations, we also really need to reserve special reverent music for the Mass! . . 👍.

YIKES! Why did you print the lyrics to “Lord of the Dance?” Now that silly song is stuck in my head. Get it out, get it out, get it out… :banghead:

My favorite these days is “Soul of my Saviour” (Anima Christi). Just been going 'round my head since watching 'The Passion of the Christ." I love all those old Eucharistic songs, though - “Humbly We Adore Thee,” “O Lord, I am not Worthy,” “Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All” Great stuff!
Oh, I love “Soul of My Saviour”. I was humming that one to myself just yesterday. It is so beautiful!

Is there a better hymn than O God Beyond All Praising ?? Here’s another GOOD one we should all sing more, God We Praise You.

I just wish they wouldn’t use songs and hymns that are NOT written for an alto!!!
I hear ya! I can’t stand singing songs when the notes are up in the rafters! Bring it DOWN for us altos and the men!

I am not really picky about the songs. I like a lot of the ones that the rest of you hate…am I crazy, or what??? (Don’t answer that…)

I got the “dollop of Daisy” sour cream advert song in my head one time, and it was DAYS before it went away!!! :eek: I actually sat down and wrote the company to tell them it was such a good jingle, but I still didn’t like their sour cream. They sent me three coupons for free sour cream. 😛

No, but you’re leading me to sin by reminding me of that inane jingle!!! :mad:

Slowly I turn . . .

😃

This will put a bug in your ear alright!!! :eek:

Click Me!!

It’s from HERE - you can hear a ton of them!

~Liza
This is a great site! Maybe these aren’t the prettiest renditions around, but if you’re trying to learn the melody to a new hymn, here it is…plain and simple. There are 2 new pieces we’re doing during lent, and both were on here. Sometimes, I know the song, but not the name of it…this is an easy way to hear it. Thanks. I, for one, appreciate it. Deb
