First, weād have to reach an agreement over the actual meaning of āsatanicā. Some would say Lavey was not satanic because he supposedly didnāt believe in an actual Satan, so if Lavey doesnāt qualify as āsatanicā then I guess no-one on this earth does. Sinister groups with songs filled with hatred of God, horrible blasphemies, accompanied by graphic material which mocks/attacks/ridicules Jesus/the crucifixion are essentially satanic IMO. Iād place Deicide in there, Cradle of Filth, Six Feet Under,Scandinavian bands that are openly satanic, Marilyn Manson. These people worship what is ugly, putrid, sordid, rotten, unholy, they love the things of Satan and have disdain for the things of God, and thatās a pretty good definition of satanism. Perhaps some of them donāt mean it, in truth it doesnāt make much difference: Marilyn Manson still spews his hellish poison to his fans, so do the other bands. āCannibal Corpseā? Are these people insane?
As for the thread, Led Zeppelin. On a satanic scale next to these degenerates, they donāt score too high. Sure, lots of their songs are not about activities condoned by Church Teachings/God, lots of sexual innuendo/references etc.Iāve often wondered if Pageās long guitar solo in Dazed and Confused (with the violin bow) hadnāt at his core a sort of dark mysticism, and the way he pointed the bow in every direction couldāve been understood as some sort of ceremony/ritual. The accompanying footage (in the movie) was shot near Boleskine (if Iām not mistaken). He had a keen interest in magic and in Aleister Crowley to the point of buying the manās ācottage on the shore of a dark, Scottish lakeā (incidentally, i think Sting at some point did state his affection for Crowleyās philosophy). Page was also involved as a musician in āLucifer Risingā , mediocre movie by mediocre occultist/satanist/āfilmmakerā Kenneth Anger. Iām also aware of what Plant said about how the lyrics to Stairway had come to him. Does that make them satanic? Page was certainly a dabbler in the occult/magic and possibly a true satanist at some point in time, but the real question is:how much of his beliefs and his twisted mind transpire on the material he produced with Led Zeppelin? Again, Iāll choose Led Zeppelin over any of the sordid musicians I referred to.
