Sounds like me. I started playing the guitar at age 12, almost 13, taking lessons. Got my first electric at age 14. Never done drugs, smoked, barely drank myself, certainly wasn’t a satanist or ruffian. I’ve never been in a bar. I’m a quiet, keep to myself kinda guy.

I agree with your appraisal of Zeppelin. Most of their songs are actually blues-based and harken back to earlier influences, like you said with the Lemon Song. In My Time of Dying and Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You and so many others are just bluesy. Many are about mythology or harken to mythological moments/themes: Immigrant Song, No Quarter, Achilles’ Last Stand, Ramble on (Gollem, LOTR), and many others. A lot of Zeppelin songs have a middle eastern flair (In the Evening, Kashmir, Nobody’s Fault but Mine, etc.) because of Robert Plant’s living in the M.E. and relationships. Some of their songs are just good ole rock anthems like Communication Breakdown, Rock n Roll, Livin Lovin, etc.

They had very few moments that could even be misconstrued for Satanism. Dazed and Confused was probably the darkest tune they ever did and that was pretty thin diabolically 😛

Most notably destroying arguably the greatest rock band of all time. What Lennon saw in that woman I’ll never know…

I love how they poke fun with the Yoko breaking up the Beatles stuff in “This Is Spinal Tap.” Genius humor…or should I say for Jharek “humour” needing to put that “u” in there! 😃

It is not uncharitable to pass unfavourable judgement upon that which we believe to be inherently evil. Moreover, just because we must not judge other men, it does not therefore follow that we must never *reprove *them, which is a great duty and act of love which may even be the means of effecting a change of heart. There is surely a place for fraternal correction, provided that it is done so in a charitable manner. What we must avoid is presuming to judge the eternal disposition of another man’s soul, since that is God’s perogative alone. However, it is right and proper to admonish our brethren if we feel that their moral health is being endangered by wrong choices, for that is a work of mercy and an act of love.
👍

Dear Jharek,

Cordial greetings and hope all is well.

It is an undeniable fact that the world of rock/pop has a deplorably bad track record when it comes to the issue of drugs, which have always been a vital ingredient for the vast majority of rock peformers. Indeed, one could say without fear of contradiction that the entire rock scene is drenched in drugs - it sort of goes with the territory.

BTW, were you aware that during the Vietnam War the US government wanted to send a top rock group to entertain the troops, but had possible bands screened first so as to ensure that they were clean of drugs. No surprises. The plan had to abandoned because no ‘clean’ group could be found. Drugs have always been an integral part of the rock scene and always will be. Whilst there were some classical musicians who lived debauched lifestyles and who were drug users, it was nowhere near comparable with that of rock and pop performers.

Now matter how some may wish it, rock and pop music cannot be cleared of its negative and depraved imputations. It peddles immorality and is a corrupter of our youth and thus needs to be denounced in the strongest terms by all good and devout men.

Rock/pop was the first genre of music in the history of the world intentionally aimed at the youth market. Its repetitive beat made its appeal to their awakening senses and unmistakably spoke of rebellion, revolution, freedom and autonomy and this chimed perfectly with the way young people feel, thus it was downright exploitative. The more that adults objected to it, the more that the young to it to their hearts. As we all know it became an international anthem for youth and was a major factor in the establishment of the despicable and sickening youth cullture that plagues us today, especially in the West.

Yes, the world of rock and pop has a great deal to answer for.

Warmest good wishes,

I hope not 'cause I come from the land of the ice and snow… 👍

Anyway, seriously, I don’t think that it is a sin. I think that it is music and everybody has different likes and dislikes. I do not believe that they say anything against God or Jesus or Mary or anything. 👍

Ya gotta love that pic!

Khan: [holds the dying Joachim] Joachim?
Joachim: Yours… is… superior…
[dies]
Khan: I shall avenge you!. 😛

He tasks me. He tasks me and I shall have him! I’ll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition’s flames before I give him up!

Horiffically Federation experts predict the ancient evil of the spandex pants may soon be upon the peoples of the Federation once more also.

Oh, I’ve examined the evidence alright. I lived it…remember? I have seen the damage done to countless individuals. Deny it if you like…but that does not change the reality. 😉

Indeed. Perhaps not in Ireland…but many would sell their souls here in a America to emulate those two.

Figure it out harek. Impressionable youths witness rock stars “livin the dream” spending millions—knee deep in smack and blow.

Why are you in denial?

Mickey, you and Jharek are great buddies to me on here. I hate to see the squabble here. I have to say that honestly most of my comrades in high school who were stoners, dopers, drunks, and losers had the personality that is perfect for substance abuse well before the media or movies or music got 'em on that track. I listened to Iron Maiden, Zeppelin, ACDC, Ratt, Crew, Scorpions, Cinderella, Guns n Roses, you name it and I’ve never touched a cigarette, only drank about five beers my whole life, don’t like drugs (never tried any) and I’m a school teacher with a wife and kids. I’m pretty much a clean dude and I listened to more metal and rock than my friends did who majorly got on drugs! Plus I got into actually playing the guitar.

So I’d say that a band like Zeppelin is harmless. If you really listen to their tunes, they’re not even singing about drugs. I mean, I can think of the song “Going to California” when Plant says “smoke my stuff” and that’s about it? 😛 Heck, the Beatles were infinitely more drug-obsessed than Zep. Zep was about mythology, blues, high energy, middle eastern themes, and having fun. I just don’t think they are a band that threatens much.

I remember as a kid all the kindergarteners listening to KISS and wearing their paint on Halloween! LOL…those kindergarteners weren’t rollin’ doobies! 😛

1 Peter 5:6-10
Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation: Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you. Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you, and confirm you, and establish you.

Then there is the apocryphal lost epistle that says:
Then as it was, then again it will be
An’ though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Blind stars of fortune, each have several rays
On the wings of maybe, down in birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn’t have to grow
But as the eagle leaves the nest, it’s got so far to go

No Squabble here. 🙂 Jharek likes to defend Led Zeppelin and Harry Potter…I do not. 🤷

The Lord blessed and protected you. A very dear friend of mine was swept up into the scene and overdosed at the age of 34. The music and the lifestyle had a direct effect. 😦
So I’d say that a band like Zeppelin is harmless.
I use to love them. I learned to play (and still know how tp play) most of their music. But at some point, my eyes were opened.
If you really listen to their tunes, they’re not even singing about drugs.
I suppose that could be debatable depending upon interpretation. But there is no denying the occult imagery and sexual connotation.
Heck, the Beatles were infinitely more drug-obsessed than Zep.

I don’t celebrate halloween. 😉

You have probably surpassed the impressionable age–and like Scott–were protected from the lifestyle by the grace of God. But I believe that everything that we take in through our senses…effects the soul. We are called to be watchful.

Thank God. But some do.

Oh please! Some of this music will inflame the passions that lead to destruction. You may stay in denial…but it is a reality…I have witnessed it.

But you have free will.

I knew many musicians who wrote their best material in altered states…to the point where it became a crutch.

My complicated, spiraling, confusing, crazy religious journey between Anglicanism, Catholicism, and Orthodoxy feels like a drug trip! Who needs chemicals, just get religiously confundido like me! 😃

I went to a Divine Liturgy yesterday. With all the incense I inhaled, I did feel funny! 😛

It’s just like on Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” on Comedy Central the other day he was showing how, on Fox News, the Republican hardcores were ripping apart Obama for having this rapper come to the White House. They were talking about his violent lyrics or something (taken out of context as usual) and Jon Stewart pointed to the hypocrisy of how George W. Bush gave Johnny Cash this medal of freedom award and Cash had all these violent lyrics Stewart read off about killing the cops and how the cops came after him, all the hard time he did behind bars, and how he hates authority, etc. I was dying laughing…! Jon Stewart is the funniest dude on earth…along with Jerry Stiller! 😃

I love Halloween. And Zeppelin! 😃 And I adore George Romero zombie movies like Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. If those things are supposed to turn ya evil and doped-up, I’m long past due!😛

I was told by everyone that that WAS the way they were supposed to do it? It was in English as well. It was an odd experience. Orthotics and comfortable shoes recommended (eesh!) 😛

Likewise.

Yes. We are polar opposite on many issues.

I have older and younger family members and friends that would take your side.

Indeed. St John of Kronstadt (1829-1908) once said regarding music:

“If these sounds give birth to physical desires, remove them totally, and never again listen to that music!”
