Legionaries of Christ acknowledge founder’s ‘inappropriate’ behavior

New Haven, Feb 3, 2009 / 01:29 pm (CNA).- Responding to unconfirmed revelations of misconduct by the Legionaries of Christ Founder Fr. Marcial Maciel, the U.S. spokesman for the Legionaries of Christ has acknowledged unspecified actions that “weren’t appropriate for a Catholic priest.” However, he insisted that Fr. Maciel “was and always will be the father of the Legion.”

The blog “Exlcblog” claimed that Fr. Scott Reilly, the Legionaries of Christ Territorial Director in Atlanta, Georgia announced to those in the Territorial Direction that Fr. Maciel had a mistress, fathered a child, and lived a double life. The blog claimed that the Legionaries of Christ is therefore renouncing Father Maciel as their spiritual father.

CNA contacted Legionaries of Christ spokesman Jim Fair, but received no specific confirmation of any allegations.

Finally it is coming out! The Regain Network has been exposing the Legion for YEARS and were branded by the Legion to be enemies of the Church for doing so, now the LEGION IS ADMITTING Maciel’s “double life”!

I wonder what the Legion will do to compensate Maciel’s victims who are still alive! And all the families that he destroyed.

So I’ll comment.

And as conservative as they are, one asks the question:

Is this their true charism?

My thoughts go to the Pharisees, who were the conservatives.
But under all that, they were as bad or worst as the pagans.

Let us pray, because as who is who is revealed, may the new order who is to be like the franciscans, jesuits and dominicans of old, destroying Satan’s grip and glorifying the Church shine and show who are the real champions of the Pope.
 
The Legionaries themselves are saying it, so no one else can then point fingers at them.

Just because a group is orthodox doctrinally does not mean that they are IMPECCABLE!
 
Another excuse for people to say why they don’t go to church. This man apparently sinner. And as a priest he broke vows and scandalized others in doing so. May God have mercy on his soul.

A number of these apply to SPPX too and that order is coming under sharp scrutiny since the lifting of the ex-communications.

There is a big danger in some of these so-called orthodox or traditionalist groups - they become their own “true churches” w/in the church.

I am troubled that Fellay of SPPX says they still have problems with Vatican 2. The Pope should insist that SPPX come back in humble submission. Not give them what they want in a one-sided effort as has happened so far. That was the wrong move and the reconciliation of the SPPX is becoming more dubious. The American bishops have spoken out now and in Europe and especially France there is strong oppopsition to this move. Hopefully it will be derailed by those with cooler heads.

The LC and SPPX are both cases of the danger of super-orthodox/traditionalist, self-claimed anyway, groups.
 
This is disturbing information to me, because I had intended on doing work for Regnum Christi in some form or another.

I still hold to all my beliefs about the organization that I did before. They do a lot of great work. The founder sinned like we all do. I’m not justifying it at all however.

Initially when hearing this, I thought maybe something could be wrong. But the allegations are strong. LC and RC will have to do something in order to salvage their credibility.

I think it will be very hard for LC to rehabilitate itself in the sense this “stain” will be upfront whenever the organization or its priests are present. IMO short of a total re-organization and name change - a “reform” - I think LC’s days are over.

Ironic as it was the only relatively large, orthodox order of priests that was gaining a fair number of vocations.

More trouble for the church at a time things seem to be in an irreversible collapse for Catholicsim in America and Europe.
 
What they have not dealt with is what… about the Legionary system in itself? Is it a healthy system? Listen to the testimony of ex-members, it seems that it isn’t.

The problem is not that they are “ultra-conservative”, the problem is that they fit the definition of a cult on a psychological level.

Even though the SSPX is irregular canonically, it is possible theoretically that they may be more healthy on the psychological level. I do not hear testimonies of people that have left the SSPX tell the horror stories that are told about the Legion.

What defines a cult is BEHAVIOR, NOT BELIEF.

One might ask why this is coming out now. They did not know all those years? There were 20 accusers in the investigation that was overseen by Cardinal Ratzinger. How much did Pope John Paul II know?

These are hard questions that we must demand an answer for. Remember the Pope is Infallible, NOT IMPECCABLE. A lot of conservative Catholics think that the Pope can do nothing wrong and that every word that comes out of his mouth is Infallible, but it’s not.

Perhaps you may want to look at the Legion website before making this statement.
The Legion of Christ has **many **apostolates my sons were involved with many and only have wonderful things to say about the Legionaries of Christ.

Yes let us continue to pray because there are a whole lot of us out here and we do our best but let us not forget we are all sinners.

Let us not forget about those ex-Legionaries that leave with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (and no assistance from the Legion).

Yes they do hold strong to this belief. There are many workers in the Kingdom of Christ. Yet if you take a good look back in history you will see Fr. Maciel is not alone. Yet somehow through God’s grace the orders still managed to grow. Yes we will continue to build the Kingdom of Christ despite people who only want to look for the bad and neglect all the good that has been done.
