Legionaries of Christ acknowledge founder’s ‘inappropriate’ behavior

I guess what frustrates many people who discuss the LC & RC with their staunch supporters is that no one seems willing to entertain even the possibility that Maciel’s influence on the group’s is so entrenched, so all-pervasive, so all-encompassing, that it might not be possible to eradicate all his “stuff” and have anything left standing of the organizations.

This is not not not a judgment or criticism of individual members of the group. I have no doubt that many souls have been led closer to Our Lord through their apostolates. Obviously, you’ve found them enormously helpful to you and your family, and that is a great blessing.

But quite frankly, refusing to engage in any kind of thoughtful, critical examination of the groups themselves, their structures, their methods, their philosophies, etc., sends off weird, cult-like signals to people outside of the RC/LC nexus. NB: I’m not calling either organization a cult. I’m just trying to explain to you how these kinds of responses appear to outsiders.

You are comparing a person who left a cushy order to do difficult work SHE CHOSE to do.

To people who were SEXUALLY and Emotionally abused!!! BY and APPROVED institute and all “orthodox” Catholics practically called them heretics!

Yes they should find them jobs even if there wasn’t any abuse. Isn’ t that their reason to exist in the first place to help people!!

I am not saying that everyone who has questions is a leftist, I am just pointing out that it is at least part of the picture here. The founder may be guilty, I am just suggesting that we should refrain from lighting our torches and burning the entire organization.
 
Being leary of any group cloaked in secrecy, I’ve not paid much attention to the Legionaires of Christ or its lay affiliate.

I do have a question, though. In what diocese was the late founder incardinated, and to which bishop(s) are the order’s priests responsible?

LC supporters seem to have great charity for LC but the people who were ABUSED! What about them

They have been put through hell TWICE once by the LC and then by their supporters!
 
I was a student at one of their schools. i was getting an education not trying to be a priest. i spent 13 years at that school and enjoyed it very much for the most part. i have met many Legionary priests some good and some bad. My family is in close communication to a man who left their priest hood. He is a good man and he does participate on one of the sites that is against the Legion. To call him un-Christian is a terrible thing to say. i have had good and bad thoughts about the Legion and would like your (name removed by moderator)ut i would list in detail both my good and bad.

THE BAD:
Being at the highschool i was at that was run by the Legion the teachers had to watch out what they said for risk of being fired. students in my class were kicked out for not being the best kid in school and i mean by not being the pet to the priest and standing up for each other. one priest went crazy on my class spied on us and chased us around the school just because one of my friends did not throw away a piece of trash. this priest then lied to my parents and the people of the school about this situation. after this though he was never allowed to take part in school activities or be around kids. this school fired several teachers for following the Diocese rules and not the Legion when the school was a part of the Diocese. the priests also played favorites if you were in RC or ECYD you could get away with anything and get all the school awards.
CO-Workers are a terrible idea. many of my friends who were co-workers came back angry at the legion. one of my best friends spent two years at my school as a co-worker. the things they made him do were terrible. being a co-worker for the legion is being a servant. they made him do their laundry come on i thought the community was supposed to help each other.
YES the Legion asks for money and loves the people that do. One student that i went to school with did some terrible things. beat kids up set off alarms and vandalized the school. this child though was never kicked out because his parents bought the school a new chapel. Money and donations can get you anywhere with the Legion. and to be considered on a level with some of the people in the legion you must be in RC. i never gave an oath to RC because i saw it as a cult who treated fr. Alvaro and fr. Maciel as the pope and the greatest people on earth.

The Legion does have issues that need to be addressed before this order that means well gets destroyed.

THE GOOD:
there are so many great people in the Legion who are trying to do God’s will. Several consecrated and priests i still hold close to my heart and pray for everyday. These Men and i mean that formed me into who i am today which i hope in the end will be a good man as i am still a college student. I stand by these Men because they did their best to form me and my classmates. though some did treat ECYD and RC as a cult.

With all of this said i have lost a lot of respect for the Legion over the past couple years. they treat their leaders as Saints who could do no wrong. they tried to force students into becoming RC members, and begged constantly for money. i gues Toni your family had good experiences with the Legion and that is good i had some too but that number slowly went away with the poor priests i came into contact with. After my sophomore year of highschool i told my parents that my sister could not be a part of this Legionary school for highschool. Thankfully they listened and sent her to another Catholic school in the area. I am happy to see this news about Maciel come out after how they talked about this man and showered him with praise it is good to see that he was human.
I know my grammar is poor i am sorry.
